Call for Policy Officer

The European Federation of Geologists is looking for a dynamic Policy Officer to join its team in Brussels and steer the association’s policy work at European level.

The Policy Officer will play a central role in amplifying the voice of the geologist profession in Brussels, engaging with EU decision-makers and stakeholders, and supporting EFG’s involvement in EU-funded projects, including the UPLIFT project. This is an exciting opportunity for someone with a strong interest in EU affairs and a commitment to advancing the role of geosciences in addressing today’s environmental and societal challenges.

Responsibilities:

  • Implement social sciences and policy-related tasks in the EU-funded UPLIFT project, and support the implementation of other EU-funded projects as requested;
  • Drive EFG’s advocacy activities to amplify the voice of the geologist profession at the European level, in line with the Federation’s strategy;
  • Monitor and gather intelligence on policy developments relevant to geologists in sectors such as mineral raw materials, energy, water, soils, natural hazards mitigation or geological heritage;
  • Provide regular briefings to management, the Board, members, and Panels of Experts on key developments, and respond promptly to internal policy-related queries;
  • Define and implement advocacy strategies to promote EFG’s positions through interactions with EU decision-makers and other relevant stakeholders;
  • Draft position papers, briefing notes, presentations, and other materials, and contribute to consultations by coordinating input from EFG member associations and expert groups;
  • Coordinate the activities of EFG Panels of Experts, Task Forces, and other internal working groups;
  • Build and maintain relationships with stakeholders and partners to enhance the organisation’s reach and influence;
  • Engage in joint advocacy activities with existing or new partner organisations, and represent EFG at conferences, workshops, stakeholder meetings, and other events;
  • Contribute content to EFG’s communication channels, including newsletters, social media, and the website.

Minimum requirements:

  1. Master’s degree in a relevant field, e.g. communication, political sciences or European studies;
  2. Ideally 2-3 years of relevant professional experience in a similar role, including advocacy-related activities;
  3. Background knowledge or experience in earth sciences, natural resources, or energy topics is an asset;
  4. A strong commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development;
  5. Strong knowledge of EU institutions and legislative processes;
  6. Excellent interpersonal and networking skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment;
  7. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills tailored to political and diplomatic contexts, including excellent drafting and summarisation abilities;
  8. Ability to communicate clearly in English, verbally and in writing (level C1 or higher);
  9. Basic knowledge of French and/or Dutch is considered an asset.
