Júlio Manuel da Costa Santos from EFG’s Portuguese National Association, the Portuguese Association of Geologists (APG), has been appointed as Secretary of the Global Geoscience Professionalism Group (GGPG). He will serve on the GGPG Board for the next two years on behalf of EFG.

The Global Geoscience Professionalism Group is a follow-up initiative of the former IUGS Task Group on Global Geoscience Professionalism (“TG-GGP”).

Formed by the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) at the 34th International Geological Congress in Brisbane, Australia, in August 2012, the Task Group provided a single global forum for interchange on professional affairs in geoscience worldwide. Its main purpose was to ensure that geoscientists, active in all areas of geoscience, are fully engaged in the transformation of their profession – a profession that is increasingly relied upon by the public to provide expert opinions and service, and to safeguard the public interest. EFG is a founding member of the Global Geoscience Professionalism Group and actively participates in all meetings and activities.

Júlio Manuel da Costa Santos has been active in the natural stone extraction and processing industry since 2007. He began his career at CCDRN, providing technical evaluations for EIAs and licensing various projects. In 2009, he became the Laboratory and Quality Manager at Pedral, overseeing significant projects such as the Ribeiradio-Ermida Dam. By 2012, Julio worked as an underground mine geologist with ALMINA, gaining experience in copper ore extraction. In 2014, he joined the Laúca Hydroelectric Project in Angola as a geotechnical geologist. Since 2015, he has provided technical support to quarries. Since 2023, Julio has been the Manager at Stoneset Quarry.

Congratulations to Júlio Manuel da Costa Santos on his election!
