On 14 October 2021, the European Federation of Geologists (EFG) organised the webinar ‘New horizons for geotechnics – the story of Zero Terrain‘.

The transition to renewable energy is inevitable and, geotechnics has an important role to play in this transformation. In developing the Zero Terrain storage concept, Energiasalv (Estonia) has come to understand that successful energy technologies must meet the following three criteria simultaneously:

  • the smallest possible use of environment and materials;
  • low costs and high conversion efficiency; and finally
  • sector coupling and new business models.

Geotechnics offers great opportunities for such a trinity. The webinar focused on the possibilities of geotechnics using the example of the Zero Terrain technology, a geotechnical pumped-hydro storage solution.

The host of the webinar was Hardi Aosaar, President of the Geological Society of Estonia. The guest speaker was Peep Siitam.

Peep graduated as a civil engineer from the Tallinn University of Technology. Peep is an experienced Board Member with a demonstrated history of working in the construction, power and mining industries. With experience in business, the public and the non-profit sector, he has been an active leader in the design and implementation of long-term energy policies. He is a founding member of a number of non-profit energy sector organisations, such as Cleantech Estonia and Estonian Energy Cooperative.
