The European Federation of Geologists (EFG) was proud to participate as a supporting partner of the 19th International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO 2026), held in Turin, Italy, from 20 to 27 August 2026. Hosted by the University of Turin, the event brought together 160 secondary school students from 41 countries to compete in Earth science disciplines including geology, geophysics, meteorology, oceanography, astronomy and environmental science.
EFG President David Govoni represented the Federation during the event. On 25 August, he joined the Networking Fair at the Botanical Garden of the University of Turin, where EFG shared a stand with the National Council of Geologists of Italy (CNG), represented by Giovanni Capulli. The occasion provided an opportunity to present EFG’s activities and promote the This is Geoscience initiative led by the Geological Society of London, of which EFG is a partner. Earlier that day, Maria Tzima, Coordinator of the EFG Panel of Experts on Education, delivered an online presentation on the EFG Education Manifesto, highlighting the importance of strengthening geoscience education and inspiring future generations.
At the closing ceremony on 27 August, David Govoni addressed participants with a clear message: there has never been a better time to become a geoscientist. He highlighted the growing global demand for geoscience expertise and encouraged students to explore initiatives such as This is Geoscience and LearnGeo to better understand the wide range of career opportunities available. He also underlined the important role of teachers, professors and mentors in guiding young people towards geoscience careers and helping them recognise the contribution Earth sciences can make to addressing global challenges.
Reflecting on the spirit of the Olympiad, Susanna Occhipinti, President of the IESO 2026 Organising Committee, emphasised the value of students from 41 countries working together across national boundaries to address real-world Earth science challenges. EFG congratulates all participants and thanks the organisers, teachers and volunteers who contributed to the success of IESO 2026. The Federation also extends its appreciation to Susanna Occhipinti for her leadership in developing this activity and strengthening EFG’s involvement in the Olympiad through her role as EFG Student and Early Career Advisor.
