The European Federation of Geologists (EFG) has published a press release highlighting the urgent need for a secure and sustainable supply of rare earth elements (REE). The newly approved EU Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA) aims to reduce Europe’s reliance on imports, as 98% of its REE currently come from non-EU countries, making the continent vulnerable to supply chain disruptions.

The war in Ukraine has further complicated access to key resources, while China’s dominance in REE refining underscores the need for Europe to invest in domestic exploration and ethical mining. The EFG calls for increased geological research, expert integration into mining legislation, and sustainable extraction practices to strengthen Europe’s resource security.
