The European Federation of Geologists (EFG) has unveiled its Policy Manifesto during a high-profile policy dialogue held at the European Parliament on 21 November. Titled ‘Geology for a Safe, Secure, and Sustainable Europe the event has emphasised the vital role of geosciences in addressing Europe’s most pressing challenges, including climate change, sustainable resource management, and economic growth.

This event has brought together representatives from European institutions, including Members of the European Parliament and representatives from the European Commission, as well as leading figures in the geoscience community.

Delegates from the EFG National Associations, along with EFG’s key partners, have engaged in a dialogue to foster collaboration between policymakers and geologists to guarantee a safe and sustainable future.

During the launch of the ‘EFG Policy Manifesto: Geology’s Vital Contribution to European Competitiveness’, the solutions geology offers for the challenges society faces have been presented. The expertise of geoscientists contributes to multiple Sustainable Development Goals.

With the publication of the Policy Manifesto as a guiding driver, the EFG has reaffirmed its commitment to aligning its expertise with European Union goals and its purpose of advocating for the key role of geoscience in promoting sustainable development and ensuring a competitive, secure future for all.

EFG President David Govoni:

“The crucial point of this event is the fundamental role of geologists in Europe. Geologists are the starting point of the entire process in the raw materials supply chain. They are the foundation of territorial planning. We must invest in geology from the very beginning. Investing in geology provides a return of up to 1,000 times the investment. By prioritising geology, we can enhance our competitiveness and well-being.”

Janos Szanyi – Policy Manifesto Lead & Coordinator EFG Panel of Experts on Geothermal:

“Why are we publishing this manifesto? As Mr. Draghi mentioned, Europe needs to strengthen its strategy. We can offer quick cooperation, particularly in decision-making and we guarantee the highest professional standards. When it comes to geothermal energy, more investment is needed in innovation to meet our goals. Geothermal is a primary candidate for diversifying our energy supply. By 2050, it should account for more than 35% of Europe’s heating supplies.”
