EFG and EAGE are pleased to announce the winners of the 2021 edition of the “Legends of Geoscience” Photo Contest.

We have received many inspiring pictures submitted in the three categories Geosciences for Society, Women Geoscientists and Landscape and Environment. Many thanks to all participants for sharing your passion for geosciences with us. Thanks also to the public who participated in the polls which allowed us to determine the winners of this edition.

The 12 finalists of the 2021 photo contest.

We are glad to introduce the three winners of this year’s contest:

First prize:

“Sometimes it Takes a Woman to Find the Real Fault” by Dharti Patel

“The photo was taken in Kutch, Gujarat, India on a geological field study. Our class traversed towards the south and headed west after a while. I stressed upon a traverse detour further to the south which led our team to this beautiful outcrop (~6 m tall) with a magnificent fault that would have otherwise gone undiscovered. Hence came the title.”

Second prize:

“Drawing of a complicated artwork” by Mehrangiz Naderi Khujin

“We were 14 geologists on a 5-day geological field trip in January 2020 in the Bandar Abbass area, south of Iran for visiting Cretaceous and Cenozoic formations of Zagros Mountain. That was our last geological program before the Covid-19 pandemic. After passing a wonderful canyon, we were standing near that nice rock wall. We began to draw and interpret the sequence stratigraphy units and surfaces of that complicated rock wall (Jahrom Formation). Silence, coolness and beautiful scenes of the canyon would be always in my mind.”

Third prize:

“Landslide” by Giorgi Lomidze

This picture was taken in Svaneti, Georgia.
