The European Federation of Geologists (EFG) is pleased to strengthen its engagement with the World Mining Congress (WMC), following the unanimous approval of its application to become an Associate Member of the International Organising Committee (IOC).
EFG was represented both at the opening of the IOC and of the WMC in Lima, Peru, by its Austrian Delegate, Prof. Leopold Weber (Austrian Mining Association, BVÖ), who delivered a welcome address on behalf of the Federation. He highlighted EFG’s commitment to strengthening cooperation between geoscience, industry and policymakers and to supporting responsible and sustainable mineral resource management.
Strengthening international cooperation
Prof. Weber underlined EFG’s growing engagement in mineral resources, sustainable extraction and professional standards, as well as its interest in developing closer cooperation with the IOC. He also highlighted EFG’s role in promoting excellence in the geosciences, supporting professional mobility and contributing to science-based policy development across Europe.
EFG’s work focuses on four key areas that closely align with the objectives of the World Mining Congress:
- Sustainable mineral resources
- Energy transition and geothermal development
- Natural hazards and environmental protection
- Science-based policy support
Through its National Associations, Expert Groups and research projects, EFG brings together geoscience professionals, researchers, industry representatives and policymakers. Its activities increasingly address global challenges such as securing critical raw materials, developing sustainable extraction practices and enabling the energy transition.
EFG sees significant potential for cooperation with the IOC, particularly in promoting responsible mining, strengthening scientific contributions to international discussions and fostering professional cooperation across borders. The Federation also aims to promote the EurGeol professional title at international level as a recognised benchmark of professional competence in geoscience.
EFG application unanimously approved
EFG External Relations Officer Arda Arcasoy virtually presented EFG’s application for Associate Membership during the 107th meeting of the International Organising Committee of the World Mining Congress held in Lima, Peru, on 23 June 2026.
EFG’s application for Associate Membership was unanimously approved by the IOC and the Federation looks forward to contributing its expertise and European professional network to the World Mining Congress community. The new relationship provides an opportunity to strengthen international cooperation on responsible mining, sustainable resource management and the role of geosciences in addressing global challenges.
