BDG Rock of the Year Ceremony
The Rock of the Year initiative is organised each year by EFG’s German national association, the Berufsverband Deutscher Geowissenschaftler e.V. (BDG). The 2026 celebration will take place on 20 September 2026 at 10:00 at the National Geotope “Porphyrfächer” in Mohorn-Grund, Wilsdruff, Germany. This year, Rhyolite has been selected as Germany’s Rock of the Year.
The event is organised in cooperation with GEOPARK Sachsens Mitte e.V., which is hosting this year’s ceremonial “rock christening”, together with the Day of the Geotope celebrations at the historic rhyolite quarry. Since 2007, a committee led by the Berufsverband Deutscher Geowissenschaftler e.V. (BDG) has selected a Rock of the Year, considering its geological formation, economic importance and role in the natural environment.
This year’s main partners are GEOPARK Sachsens Mitte e.V., the Saxon State Office for Environment, Agriculture and Geology, the Mineral Building Materials Association UVMB e.V., and the City of Wilsdruff.
