Maria Tzima, the new PE on Education Coordinator

The Panel of Experts (PE) on Education was established in 2011. It intends to deal with educational questions in geology (earth sciences) at all education levels from primary school to postgraduate courses. In 2015-16 the Panel carried out a survey on geology in school education, public courses and outreach activities in the countries represented by the panel members. The results will be combined with another survey involving university students in order to know how these factors influence university and career choice.

Recently the coordinator of the panel has been Éva Hartai. She is a geologist (certified EurGeol #1020), Honorary Professor at the University of Miskolc, the editor-in-chief of EFG’s European Geologist journal, and coordinator of EU funded projects (CHPM2030 and ENGIE). She has been active on the panel with the establishment of the Friendly Rock Network, in proposal preparation, and many more.

Starting in 2020 Maria Tzima is going to coordinate the group. She is a geologist (certified EurGeol #1635), with an MSc in Management of Water Resources from the National Technical University of Athens. She has more than 18 years of professional experiences in hydrogeological studies for groundwater aquifers, exploitation studies for groundwater bodies, water management, quality and quantity protection of groundwater resources, modeling groundwater flow and environmental impact assessments for technical projects. She is the Secretary – General of Association of Greek Geologists and an active member of a committee for educational matters in Greece. She is an independent consultant for hydrogeology and water management at the Greek Institute of Geological and Mineral Exploration.

Maria Tzima aims to continue re-activating the Friendly Rock Network, working on EU proposals, and involving the panel members in the new EIT project ENGIE: Encouraging Girls to Study Geosciences and Engineering. Stay tuned for more updates on the panel activities!
