Instrumentation and Monitoring of Tunnels and Deep Excavations in Urban Environment

23rd March 2022 @ 8:00 am - 1st April 2022 @ 5:00 pm

INSTRUMENTAÇÃO E MONITORIZAÇÃO DE TÚNEIS E ESCAVAÇÕES PROFUNDAS EM MEIO URBANO

This is a course endorsed by EFG

The training course “Instrumentation and Monitoring of Tunnels and Deep Excavations in Urban Environment” organised by the Portuguese Association of Geologists (in Portuguese) will take place online from 23 March 2022 to 1 April 2022. Additionally, in April, there will be a visit to a construction site.

Outline of content:

1 – Definitions and general concepts (1h30)
• Framing of instrumentation and monitoring in geotechnical risk management and the observational method;
• Instrumentation and monitoring are an integral part of an s.l Project. (Structure or infrastructure, from the feasibility phase, where it should be considered, to the exploration phase, with the greatest emphasis
on the construction phase);
• Concepts – risk management (risk identification, risk detection, risk mitigation), observational method, instrumentation, monitoring, information circuit, contingency measures, maintenance, intervention;
• Principle of redundancy and confirmation of results;
• Tunnels in urban and non-urban environments, excavation and containment methodologies, geological-geotechnical framework and its influence on the geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring plan.

2 – The equipment traditionally used (1h30)
• Observation devices – Targets, surface marks, fissurometers, clinometers, piezometers, inclinometers.
• Vibrating String Instruments – strain gauges, load cells, strain gages, pressure cells, interstitial pressure cells.
• Fiber Optic Instruments – traditional, long-range, temperature, voltage.

3 – Price: the elephant in the room (1h30)
• What no one ever talks about, but most of the time is the (only) selection criterion;
• Observation devices and instruments for tunnels and orders of magnitude of their price values;
• Manual readings vs automatic readings

4 – Instrumentation plan: plan before measuring (1h30)
• Tunnel instrumentation plan in urban areas (selection of equipment type, equipment quantities, frequency of readings, alert and alarm
level, contingency measures)
• Definition of the plan in neighbouring buildings, structures (roads and other means of communication);
• Definition of the plan inside the tunnel.

5 – Construction Phase: Measure to Control (1h30)
• Implementation of the instrumentation system (installation)
• Implementation of the monitoring system (data acquisition, presentation of results, information circuit)
• Results analysis
• Intervention (verification of project assumptions)

6 – Exploration Phase: Instrumentation for the Life of the Structure (1h30)
• Guarantee of security for users;
• Assurance of security of the structure;
• Insurance premium.

7 – Visit to a Tunnel or Deep Excavation Work (1h30)

Venue:

Online (via Zoom) and a field trip to a construction site.

Cost of the course:

APG Members and EurGeol – 130 EUR
Non Members – 175 EUR
Students (APG Members) – 110 EUR
Students (Non Members) – 125 EUR
