The European Federation of Geologists (EFG) has contributed to the European Commission Call for Evidence on the Fair Labour Mobility Package, which seeks to improve the functioning of labour mobility within the EU Single Market while reinforcing social protection, enforcement, and fairness for mobile workers.

EFG notes that the Package rightly acknowledges labour mobility as an area where the Single Market remains incomplete. For geoscientists, whose work frequently spans national borders and supports strategic EU objectives in areas such as raw materials, energy transition, and environmental protection, predictable and effective mobility frameworks are essential.

In its response, EFG highlights that general labour mobility measures risk falling short for regulated and science-intensive professions unless profession-specific solutions are incorporated. Barriers linked to the recognition and portability of qualifications continue to limit mobility for geologists, particularly in the absence of automatic recognition mechanisms. EFG therefore underlines the importance of common training approaches, greater use of trusted European professional titles such as the European Geologist (EurGeol), and the deployment of digital credentials to support transparent and efficient cross-border recognition.

The submission also welcomes efforts to reinforce the role of the European Labour Authority, stressing the value of engaging EU-level professional bodies in enforcement, guidance, and information tools. In addition, EFG draws attention to ongoing challenges related to social security coordination, taxation, and administrative compliance for project-based and highly mobile professionals, as well as the need for clear and balanced frameworks to support the integration of highly skilled third-country nationals while maintaining high professional standards.
