Markku Iljina has been awarded the 2024 Medal of Merit of the European Federation of Geologists (EFG), following her nomination by Geologiliitto.

Dr. Markku Iljina defended his doctoral thesis at the University of Oulu in 1994. The title of his dissertation was ‘The Portimo Layered Igneous Complex, with emphasis on diverse sulphide and platinum-group element deposits’.

Dr. Iljina has over 35 years of post-graduation experience in mineral exploration and geological research. His career began as an exploration geologist at Outokumpu Mining, where he participated in exploration projects in Finland, Norway, and Australia.

From 1996 to 2014, he worked at the Geological Survey of Finland, serving in various roles. In 2010, he founded his own company, Markku Iljina GeoConsulting Oy.

Throughout his career, Dr. Iljina has consistently worked to enhance the standing and reputation of the geological profession. As a company manager, he has served as a role model for young professionals, mentoring them during the early stages of their careers.

Dr. Iljina played a key role in reviving Geologiliitto and the EuroGeologist title in Finland. He has held the EuroGeologist (EurGeol) title #575 since 2004.

Dr. Markku Iljina has held the following positions of responsibility:

• Honorary Fellow, Geological Society of London (awarded in 2018)
• Coordinator, EFG Panel of Experts on Minerals and Their Sustainable Use
• Co-opted Member, PERC (Pan-European Reserves & Resources Reporting Committee)
• Chairman, National Vetting Committee (responsible for the accreditation of European Geologists)
• Chairman, Geologiliitto ry (Finnish Union of Geologists), 2012–2016.
