Panel of Experts on the Geological Disposal of Radioactive Material
Mission
The Panel of Experts on Geological Disposal of Radioactive Wastes are aligned with the principal objectives of the European Federation of Geologists and aim to support national decision-making agencies at all levels, communities, and industry supported by robust geoscience. It is the belief of the Panel that nuclear power will increasingly become a viable option to progress to a low carbon economy and be examined by most governments, the panel will support all stakeholders to access a balanced knowledge resource.

Our current activity
The Expert Panel will produce resources reflecting the latest geoscience knowledge, perspectives, and balanced risk assessment in a series of publications, peer reviewed documents and internet accessible data to enable balanced discourse between all stakeholders.
Work Package 01
Construct a set of generic Briefing Notes to EU political and financial decision-makers.
- The Expert Panel will give guidance on the topic of geological disposal of nuclear waste to a range of expected clients, from governmental decision makers to students, community interest groups and the media.
- The briefing notes should highlight areas of geological Risk and Uncertainty that should be addressed and suggest possible standard workflows for subsurface identification. The notes should carry relevant appendices and a glossary and original diagrams and images.
Work Package 02
Design and construct a set of teaching materials around geological disposal of nuclear waste.
- Aim at High School (16-18yrs), Undergraduate and postgraduate modules, link to national STEM curriculum, link to career advice, link to use by media.
Work Package 03
Informative Literature for Public, Media, Communities, Local Government and National Government.
- Public – Expect these data and products to be used by a variety of national / international pro- and anti- geological disposal stakeholders.
- Media – Material must be pitched as informative, colourful, and available for reproduction in a limited context (need advice on a controlled creative commons license).
- Communities – Our work must be accurate and based in sound science while being supportive and of material use to potential communities identified during the disposal process.
- Local Government (Communes, regional / local government) – These may or may not be supportive of a national geological disposal process. They may be seeking advice to clarify what they have been told by the local national disposal agency.
- National Government – Possible our work could be used as a check or external source to support the national geological disposal strategy.
