The European Federation of Geologists (EFG) is pleased to endorse the document “Artificial Intelligence (AI) Ethics Recommendations for the Geoscience Community“, released by the Commission on Geoethics of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS).

This report provides essential recommendations for the ethical application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the geosciences. It has been prepared by the Task Group on AI Ethics in Geosciences under the IUGS Commission on Geoethics.

The report is intended to guide geoscientists working in academia, industry, government, and non-governmental organizations, as well as society leaders and policymakers.

The document identifies eight key ethical themes with corresponding recommendations:

-1. Use AI responsibly
-2. Promote transparency and explainability
-3. Consider bias and fairness
-4. Obtain informed consent and protect personal data
-5. Practice participatory design and community engagement
-6. Advocate for environmental protection
-7. Uphold integrity in science, publishing, and education
-8. Consider geopolitics

The EFG fully supports this document and encourages the entire geoscience community to adopt and apply its recommendations.
