Eva Hartai

Dr. Eva Hartai has been awarded the 2020 Medal of Merit of the European Federation of Geologists (EFG), following her nomination by the Hungarian Geological Society (MFT).

Geologist, Honorary Professor at the University of Miskolc, Institute of Geology and Mineralogy. Graduated as Dipl. Geologist (1974) from the Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest, Hungary. She earned her PhD degree in the Technical University of Kosice, Slovakia (2001). Her main field of research was the mineralogy of epithermal Au-Ag ores of Hungary and Slovakia.
Upon graduation, she started her career at the University of Miskolc in 1974, as Assistant Professor, then Senior Lecturer, and finally as Associate Professor until her retirement in 2016. As a professor, she has held the basic Geology 101 courses in the University of Miskolc and gave the introduction of geology to a wide range of mining, petroleum, hydrogeology etc. engineering students. The two editions of her book, Everchanging Earth, became a popular textbook for such courses in several Hungarian universities.
She is great organiser and has outstanding competence in project management. The first of these was a bilateral Hungarian-Slovakian project, resulting the creation of the university’s Telkibánya Field Training Centre in 2005, with an upgrade in 2009. Afterwards, she coordinated a TAMOP project to develop a whole range of digital course materials in Earth Science Engineering. Later she successfully coordinated a number of H2020 projects for both the Miskolc University and the European Federation of Geologists (Intraw, CHPM2030, Kindra, Robominers, ENGIE etc). Her personality, precision and open character has largely contributed to the successful completion of these projects in a wide international environment.
She is active member of professional societies. For two terms she acted as chairperson of the Education Branch of the Hungarian Geological Society. She also worked as Board Member in the European Federation of Geologists, researcher representative of the Earth Sciences Department of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
As chief editor of the European Geologist magazine, her work brought substantial improvement in both the content and the regularity of the journal.
In her work and private life, in spite of various hard ordeals, she was able to remain balanced, cheerful, and humble. Her knowledge and humanism are reflected in all her actions. As a European geologist she works tirelessly to advance public understanding and creating learning opportunities for students, inspiring a new generation of geo-scientists. She is an institution.
On behalf of the Hungarian Geological Society we recommend her to be decorated with the EFG Medal of Merit.
