SUMMARY:Salt Diapirism and Sediment Interactions in Portugal Lusitanian & Algarve Basins
DESCRIPTION:This course is endorsed by EFG. \nThis 5 day field trip focuses on the main aspects of salt tectonics\, particularly on diapirs and their interplay with sedimentary processes. Participants will observe structural and sedimentary features that are usually not detectable on seismic data. \nThe onshore Algarve and Lusitanian basins located on the Atlantic West Iberian Margin present world-class exposures that are ideal to visualize common aspects and problems that professionals deal with during exploration\, appraisal\, and development phases of hydrocarbon accumulations and for underground energy storage (natural gas\, hydrogen\, compressed air\, battery systems\, etc…)\, CCUS\, geothermal energy and toxic /nuclear waste storage.\nThe geological structures in the two basins improve our understanding of the origin and complexity of evaporitic sequences and related halokinetic processes\, limitations with imaging and interpreting internal and external structure of salt diapirs. Participants will observe the implications of salt tectonics for reservoir properties and trapping mechanisms on upturned salt diapir flanks\, thermal gradient variation and intra-salt heterogeneity. \nThis field trip is based on research undertaken by the instructors over the past 8 years in two Portuguese basins. Participants will understand salt tectonics concepts while observing world-class field examples\, which include: \n\n\nAn unique chance to see outcrops with an oil field trapped against a salt diapir; \n\n\nVisit a salt mine inside a squeezed diapir beneath the centre of Loulé City in Algarve; \n\n\nExplore the deepest evaporite quarry in Portugal\, which was originally a mine; \n\n\nMultiple exceptional outcrops of salt-related structures in Central and southern Portugal. \n\n\n  \nFurther information and registration:: https://www.geologica.xyz/salt-tig-geo-logica-field-trip-i2 \nCourse characteristics: \nPhysical requirements: Easy. Participants will be required to walk a maximum of 2 km at some localities over easy relatively flat terrain. Not recommended for claustrophobic individuals (visit to mine).\nDuration: 5 days\nType: Fieldwork and evening talks\nArea: Central Algarve and Central Costal Portugal\nTarget audience: Salt Specialists\, Structural Geologists\, Petroleum Geologists\, Geophysicists\, Mining Geologists and Engineers.\nPre-requisites: Structural geology and salt tectonic principles\nWhat’s included: Transportation\, meals\, accommodation in 4 star (3 nights) and 5 Star  (1 night) hotels\, digital and paper field guide\, personal insurance\, PPE bag (hard hat\, reflective vest\, emergency blanket\, waterproof whistle) and walking poles (at request).\nNumber of participants: Minimum of 15 and maximum 20 persons + 3 guides / instructors. \nCourse Cost: 3000 € (excl. tax).\nSpecial discount rates available for EFG – European Federation of Geologists (20%) or APG – Associação Portuguesa de Geólogos members (10%). Early bird discount available (10%) for the first 5 participants until the end of May 2023. \n

SUMMARY:From Space to field: Application of recent technologies to field structural geological mapping
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nThis course is endorsed by EFG. \nThis 3 day course introduces the potential of using virtually free publicly available remote sensing data and related tools / softwares /apps to assist structural geological interpretation and mapping\, as an integrated method to be used both in the office and field. During the first two days\, main data types and techniques used in remote sensed structural interpretation will be presented\, for both compressional and extensional geological settings.\nTheoretical concepts will be illustrated by presenting real examples. Practical hands-on interpretation exercises will be followed to consolidate aspects learned. The methodology for creating geological maps and converting these into formats that can be used in tablets and smartphones will be demonstrated. On the third day\, participants will test the field usage of t maps created and converted during the course. This will allow ground check/confirmation of previously interpreted data and for collection of new field info. The instructor has two decades of experience in the application of these methodologies\, having already presented and taught this topic on several occasions. In 2015\, the course was presented to the Association of Portuguese Geologists where it was then certified by the European Federation of Geologists. \nRegistration form: https://forms.gle/RjM2NE5b3TyTDcSY6 \nObjectives of the course: \nIntroduction to satellite data & associated methodologies\n– Types of satellite data used in geological mapping;\n– Public domain satellite data sources;\n– Methodologies and workflows. \nTectonic regimes and its expression on satellite imagery\n– Identifying extensional regimes on satellite imagery and practical interpretation exercises on satellite imagery\n– Identifying compressional regimes on satellite imagery and practical interpretation exercises on satellite imagery \nPractical Exercises: Data compilation and preparation for fieldwork.\n– Introduction to GIS freewares and softwares; Satellite data loading and map geo-referencing in GIS and Google Earth;\n– Extracting geological information from maps in GIS and Google Earth (creating layers\, shapefiles\, placemarks\, importing shapefiles);\n– Geological interpretation and identification of areas of interest;\n– Fieldwork planning and data export into GPS; \nField training\n-Creation of tracklog for the journey/ fieldwork;\n– Observe the geological structure identified and compiled on previous days using of satellite imagery and geological maps.\n– Observe the main geomorphological aspects: Satellite Vs Field.\n– Use GPS to search in the field where are located previously identified areas of interest.\n– Collect data in the areas of interest and add it into GPS and export them into GIS. \nLanguage: Portuguese. \nCourse fees: \n\n\n\nAPG Members & EurGeol\n200\,00 €\n\n\nNon-members\n300\,00 €\n\n\nStudents (APG Members) \n85\,00 €\n\n\nStudents \n150\,00 €

SUMMARY:FEM 2023
DESCRIPTION:The biannual FEM\, founded in 1998\, brings together over thousand exploration and mining industry leaders\, experts and researchers from over 30 countries. \nFEM highlights exploration and mining in Fennoscandia. In addition to Nordic experts\, the conference will feature many international speakers\, including top names\, corporate management in the field\, researchers and specialists from e.g. Canada and Australia. \nMany mining and exploration events concentrate on mining technology and processing industry. The Fennoscandian Exploration and Mining (FEM)\, on the other hand\, has from the very beginning focused mainly on exploration and mine development. Therefore FEM invites speakers from exploration and mining companies\, research institutes\, academia\, authorities and geological surveys. All presentations are by invitation only (no open call for abstracts). \nEFG is a media partner of FEM 2023.
