DESCRIPTION:On February 20-21\, 2020 the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) is hosting the inaugural international conference Big data and machine learning in geosciences in Berlin\, with kind support of the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi). \nThe conference will highlight these issues by giving a platform for outstanding experts in the field of big data and machine learning. Contributions from academia\, governmental organizations and industry are highly appreciated. February 20 will address big data and AI applications in a global perspective with keynotes from selected issues. Invited talks introduce the current state and describe future tracks of machine learning (ML) technologies for geospatial applications. The experts join for a moderated plenary discussion on “How AI is changing the game”. February 21 will focus on specific applications of ML in geosciences with invited talks on mineral and petroleum exploration\, groundwater and soil science\, Earth data mining and geohazard assessment. The experts join for a moderated plenary discussion on “Challenges and opportunities in geosciences”. \nThe main aim of the conference is to discuss challenges and opportunities in managing big data and natural resources in the light of global climate change and energy transition with experts\, scientists\, governmental organizations and industry. \nPlease click the link for more details about the conference and the online registration: https://www.bgr.bund.de/big_data&ML. \nThe participation to the conference is free of charge.

SUMMARY:Tackling environmental concerns for deploying geothermal energy in Europe
DESCRIPTION:This first day will present instruments to answer the environmental concerns related to deep geothermal energy projects that are operational or under development in Europe. The discussions will be based on the preliminary results of the GEOENVI project and the final conclusions of the EC tender: “Study on Geothermal plants’ and applications’ emissions: overview and analysis”\, conducted by the Ernst&Young\, RINA and VITO\, which aim at setting an adapted methodology for assessing environmental impacts and risks of geothermal projects. The event will also debate the latest development in terms of environmental regulations and sustainable finance regulations at European level. \nThe following day will continue discussing environmental concerns and it will be concluded by two workshops: an Industry workshop on reference plants and assets\, and ETIP-DG session. \nDeadline for registration > January 29th

SUMMARY:Expert Forum on Digitalisation
DESCRIPTION:Exploration\, mining and mineral processing involves the collection and analysis of vast quantities of data from various scales of observation and over variable timeframes. As the digitalisation of the sector is progressing\, Artificial Intelligence (AI)\, Machine Learning (ML)\, Deep Learning (DL)\, Augmented/Virtual Reality (AR/VR) and data integration solutions are increasingly being used to collect\, analyse and manage data and to visualize content in real time in variable contexts. AI\, ML\, DL\, AR\, VR and data integration are thus the topics of the first Expert Forum of the EIT RawMaterials Sustainable Discovery and Supply Lighthouse. \nThe goal of the event is to trigger interaction among European stakeholders who work with and develop innovative digital solutions with applications in exploration\, mining and processing of minerals and metals. \nHence\, the Expert Forum is aimed at stakeholders from the raw materials sector and experts actively researching\, developing and employing digital solutions in exploration\, mining and mineral processing (aligning with the strategic outlook of the Lighthouse Sustainable Discovery and Supply) – from universities\, research & technology organisations\, major companies\, SMEs and start-ups. The event will feature a session on disruptive start-ups in the raw materials sector as well as a thesis award for outstanding MSc and PhD theses that incorporated smart and innovative digital solutions. \nWe do have sponsorship packages and booth spaces available should your organization be interested. For sponsorship opportunities please contact Sylwia Wasilewicz Crozier sylwia.wasilewicz@eitrawmaterials.eu or +48 882 149 646 directly. \nPlease be aware that there are a limited number of hotel rooms available in Leoben\, so the earlier you book your trip the better. Leoben can be reached by train from Vienna or Graz.

SUMMARY:Exploration Geochemistry Course
DESCRIPTION:Description With practically all of the world’s near surface deposits being exposed\, future discoveries will need to be made in areas with extensive transported cover. Geologists will need to use the most up to date tools\, which include using geochemical exploration methods.  These two days of power point lectures will cover the topics of primary dispersion\, secondary dispersion\, sampling strategies\, seeing thru transported cover\, analytical methods\, quality control\, data analysis\, multi-elemental methods such as partial and selective leaches as well as field based soil pH techniques.  The course will also cover case studies from geochemical surveys in diverse physiographic and climatic environments from around the world. \nWho should attend This course is suitable for exploration geologists ranging from new graduates who will benefit from a presentation of the basic principles\, to more senior geologists who have an interest in developing their skills in applied geochemistry.  Past course participants have also included government geologists\, prospectors and mining engineers. \n Dave Heberlein has been involved in mineral exploration for the past 37 years.  He holds a B.Sc. (Hons.) in Geology from the University of Southampton\, England\, and an M.Sc.\, (Geology and Exploration Geochemistry) from the University of British Columbia.  He has world-wide experience in exploring for both precious and base metal deposits and has worked extensively in both North and South America\, Europe\, Africa and Australia. Prior to joining Barrick Gold Corp. in 1994\, he worked for a number of senior Mining companies.\nFrom 1995 to 2002\, he was Barrick’s Exploration Manager for Argentina and Chile.  In this role he managed exploration of the El Indio gold belt including the El Indio and Tambo mines and the giant Pascua Lama high sulphidation deposit.  After returning to Canada in 2002 he became Barrick’s Chief Geochemist for global exploration until he left the company in early 2007. He is currently a consulting exploration geochemist based in Vancouver\, BC. \nCourse Outline \n\n\n\n History of exploration geochemistry \n\n\n Primary Dispersion \n\n\n Secondary Dispersion \n Element mobility \n Weathering and weathering products \n The effects of climate and physiography \n Geochemical landscape \n Mechanical dispersion \n Hydromorphic dispersion \n\n\n Sampling strategies \n Waters \n Stream sediments \n Soils \n Glacial deposits \n Lake sediment \n\n\n Seeing through transported cover: Soil pH and Deep Penetrating Methods \n Soil pH \n Partial and Selective leaches \n Case studies \n\n\n Analytical Methods \n Sample preparation and digestions \n Total vs. Partial methods \n Field portable analytical methods \n Sampling for robust gold analysis. \n\n\n Quality Control \n Accuracy and Precision \n Use of control samples \n Data validation \n\n\n Data Analysis \n Summary statistics \n Histograms and Probability Plots \n Box and Whisker Plots \n Data transformations \n Data Levelling \n\n\n Multi-element methods \n Scatter plots \n Correlation coefficients \n Indices \n Element zonation mapping \n Poor man’s PCA \n Weighted Sums \n\n\n\n\n $1400 CAD early registration (by Sep 27\, 2019)  |  $1650 CAD late registration (after Sep 27\, 2019) \n Fee includes:\nTwo (2) full days of instruction\nshortcourse notes\nbreaks and lunch daily\nparticipation certificate\n \nSpace is limited for all Courses.
