DESCRIPTION:This is a course endorsed by EFG. \nExploration and Evaluation of Geological Resources – Tools and Methods / Prospeção e Avaliação de Recursos Geológicos – Ferramentas e Métodos \nOutline of content: \nThis course has been designed to assign new skills or to allow the recycling of knowledge to all technicians involved in the Mining and Geological Resources Industry. This is an area of primary need for human beings\, although it has been losing its social recognition\, largely due to past errors committed in the recent decades\, which large international companies are wanting to change. SUMMARY:Mineral Exploration via Satellite Remote Sensing
DESCRIPTION:This is a course endorsed by EFG. \nThis course is included in the 6th Meggen Raw Material Days. \nThis seminar explains the use of remote sensing and remotely sensed data in mineral exploration and in geology. The basic principles of satellite remote sensing will be explained in the mineral exploration context.  A general approach in mineral exploration will be adapted in satellite remote sensing with several techniques especially in metallic mineral exploration. Basic techniques in identifying the mineral assemblages in different types of mineralization have all been studied with different satellites\, sensors and systems over more than 4 decades. SUMMARY:Exploration Geochemistry - EGRC Professional Development Course
DESCRIPTION:This comprehensive 3-module short course (presented as 6 x 3.5 hr teaching days) is designed for geology graduate students and mineral exploration professionals looking for continuing professional development in exploration and applied geochemistry. Module 1 of the course would also be suitable for database professionals wishing to know more about the collection of geochemical data and the assessment of its quality\, as well as for more seasoned geologists wishing to review recent advances in the collection\, analysis\, QA/QC and management of data. \nThe short courses involve Powerpoint lectures to introduce concepts but will be interspersed with short practical exercises to reinforce some of the strategies and methods. Examples will be drawn from publicly available data sources from Canada\, Australia and Sudan\, with detailed data sets from the central Victorian goldfields used for data integration exercises. The aim of the complete 3-day short course series is to equip the participants to confidently design\, implement and interpret diverse data sets from geochemical exploration programs while ensuring “fit for purpose” data quality and data management. \nEFG members benefit from reduced registration fees.  \n\n\n\nModule 1 – 15 & 16 September – Data Acquisition\, Quality Assessment and Management \n\nGeochemical sampling strategies\, sample preparation and analytical methods\, quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC)\, and basic data management\nAn A to Z of designing\, implementing and reporting geochemical data in compliance with current public reporting codes.\n\n\n\n\nModule 2 – 22 & 23 September – Exploratory Data Analysis using ioGAS \n\nWill introduce a structured approach to both univariant and multivariant exploratory data analysis of geochemical data in the best interpretive software available – ioGAS.\nA key focus of the approach will be the attribution of geochemical data with a variety of metadata for process discovery.\n\nThe first part of this module\, on 22 September\, will be immediately preceded by an optional one-hour session – Introduction to ioGAS – for those unfamiliar with the software.\n\n\nModule 3 – 29 & 30 September – Integration of Geochemical\, Mineralogical and Geological Data \n\nBuilds upon the use of ioGAS to integrate geochemical\, mineralogical and geological data. Participants should either have completed Module 2 of the series or have some experience in use of the software.\nMineralogical data included in the practical sessions includes XRD\, hyperspectral and normative mineralogy. DESCRIPTION:The 11th International Conference on Sustainable Development and Planning builds upon a series that started in 2003 in Skiathos\, Greece\, followed by other meetings in Bologna (2005)\, Algarve (2007)\, Cyprus (2009)\, New Forest – home of the Wessex Institute\, UK (2011); Kos\, Greece (2013)\, Istanbul (2015)\, Penang (2016)\, the University of the West of England in Bristol\, UK (2017) and Siena (2018). \nPlanners\, environmentalists\, architects\, engineers\, policy makers and economists have to work together to ensure that planning and development can meet our present needs without compromising the ability of future generations. \nProblems related to development and planning\, which affect rural and urban areas\, are present in all regions of the world. Accelerated urbanisation has resulted in the deterioration of the environment and loss of quality of life. Urban development can also aggravate problems faced by rural areas such as forests\, mountain regions and coastal areas\, amongst many others. Taking into consideration the interaction between different regions and developing new methodologies for monitoring\, planning and implementation of novel strategies can offer solutions mitigating environmental pollution and non-sustainable use of available resources. \nEnergy saving and eco-friendly building approaches have become an important part of modern development\, which places special emphasis on resource optimisation. Planning has a key role to play in ensuring that these solutions\, as well as new materials and processes\, are incorporated in the most efficient manner. \nSustainable Development and Planning 2020 will bring together academics\, policy makers\, practitioners and other stakeholders from across the globe to discuss the latest advances in the field. This work was a horizon scanning exercise aiming to understand the relevance of digital and enabling technologies for CCS and assess what benefits these technologies could offer to the large-scale deployment of CCS. Current R&D into the reduction of costs\, risks\, timescales and challenges in CCS primarily focusses on conventional improvement methods; emerging and enabling technologies have the potential to offer more opportunities for cost and risk reduction.

DESCRIPTION:The Copernicus MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) is an online training aimed at enabling anyone to understand how to use Earth Observation data in order to address societal challenges and generate business opportunities. \nParticipants will learn how Copernicus data can be used for evidence-based public policy\, as well as to develop new products and services\, open up new markets\, improve quality of life\, and make the most of limited resources in a sustainable way. \nThe Copernicus MOOC aims to make Copernicus and its ecosystem accessible to all. It is designed for all people who use or could benefit from using geo-information data\, but who have no or limited prior experience in doing so. All first-time and intermediate users of Copernicus data and services from the public and private sector are therefore invited to participate: civil servants\, policy makers\, entrepreneurs\, innovators\, intrapreneurs\, service designers\, and others. \nThe course is funded by the EU and registration is free and open to all. \nThe Copernicus MOOC will be held twice in 2020: \n\nMOOC 1: March – May 2020\nMOOC 2: September – December 2020\n\nEach MOOC will consist in 12 lessons of 2 hours each\, over a period of 12 weeks. \nThe course will address three key topics: \n\nUnderstanding Copernicus data and services– what they are\, and how they can be accessed and used\nLearning from success stories – understanding how existing Copernicus-enabled services and applications have been developed and deployed\nDoing it yourself – acquiring the key skills and knowledge to develop and deploy Copernicus-enabled products and services and to navigate the Copernicus ecosystem.\n\nThe course modules will be taught in English by internationally-recognised experts and successful practitioners. Different engaging and interactive formats will be used during the lessons\, from webinars and videos to use cases and projects. DESCRIPTION:The Future of GeoScience is Now. \nThis free\, virtual and first-of-its-kind networking event\, brought to you in association with Digital Leaders\, will bring together the geo-community into a common space where all involved can present\, share and understand differing perspectives\, ideas and goals\, helping shape the Future of GeoScience. \nFollowing the success of the FutureGeo Summit in June\, which over 6000 people viewed or interacted with\, this next event focuses in on the key challenges and themes that have been discussed\, debated and presented over the past few months as the #FutureGeo conversation has grown louder. \nThe #DigiLounge is a virtual platform. You only need a web browser (Firefox\, Chrome and Safari) to access and there are no downloads involved. A checklist for the event will be circulated in the lead up to the 29th September. \nThe event mimics a traditional networking event\, however\, it minimises travel and associated costs\, promoting inclusivity and breaking down geographic borders as you connect with not just people from the UK but from all four corners of the world. \nThe #DigiLounge is a virtual space for up to 800 people sat cabaret-style in tables of 6 with a main stage. Each floor has 10 tables\, and caters for up to 100 people. Once the event starts you will be dropped into a table on a floor\, in the table you will be able to see (via webcam) all other people on your table\, as well as a business card style profile which you can fill in upon entry to the event. You do not need to have your camera on\, you can connect without being face to face and all you will need are a microphone and audio connected to talk to others. There are chat functions built in to the platform which allow you to chat with everyone in the event\, on your floor\, on your table or privately to individuals or groups. In short\, it is all about real\, human connection. \nThe idea for FutureGeo 2.0 is to take the 8 floors and apply a theme to each of them. As noted above\, these themes have been drawn from the first FutureGeo Summit and ongoing projects/research and conversations occurring throughout the Geo-Community. \nDuring the event\, all in attendance will be able to move between up to 8 floors which are themed as follows: \n\nDiversity\, Difference and Equality in GeoScience\nInclusivity and Opportunity in GeoScience\nGeoScience through Geography and STEM – KS3 and KS4\nThe Decline in University Student Enrolment\nUtilising Emerging Technologies in GeoScience\nPromoting Cross-Disciplinary GeoScience Degrees/Careers\nThe Energy and Materials Transition\nWater\nCommunicating GeoScience\n\nOn a floor\, you will be able to join tables and discuss\, debate and explore opportunities in these themes\, networking with open and like-minded individuals who share in your passions and experiences. You will be encouraged to explore themes that are outside their comfort zone to share in differing perspectives. This will be a truly global summit with attendees from all four corners of the globe so it will be an amazing opportunity to connect with people you would never normally connect with. \nThe running order for the event has been designed to keep it very simple. It is as follows: \n09:30am: The Event opens to registered delegates. They will be dropped into a table somewhere in the event. \n09:30-09:40am: Intros and basic tutorials on how to use the functionality in the platform and navigate around the floors and tables. \n09:40am – 09:50am: Introductions from selected theme champions and explanation of how the next hour will work. \n09:50am – 11am: Networking session\, allowing delegates to move freely between tables and floors exploring the different themes and engaging around common talking points. \n11am – 11:15am: Selected theme champions will be asked to ‘come up to the front’ and present on their key takeaways. \n11:15am – 11:20am: Introduction to speed networking round. \n11:20am – 11.50am: Three 10 minute rounds of speed networking. A bell and countdown will be displayed on the screen and once the time is up\, attendees will be asked to move to another table. \nNot only is this an opportunity for attendees to connect with the wider geo-community\, it will also be a chance to hone our ability to promote our individual value and role in society. The EU-funded research project INFACT (Innovative\, Non-Invasive and Fully Acceptable Exploration Technologies) supports the development of innovative exploration and stakeholder engagement approaches. DESCRIPTION:Up to 70% of scientists will transition to careers outside of academia after their PhD. Transferable scientific skills and knowledge are becoming progressively valued in non-academic job sectors. However\, navigating job opportunities and transitioning to different career paths can be difficult. This webinar will focus on the career paths of four scientists\, from a background of science areas\, who are working in non-academic sectors. The panellists will talk about their journey in finding careers\, tips for transitioning and what skills are particularly valuable to non-academic industries. There will be plenty of time for questions from the audience. \nSpeakers:\n– Dr Liam Brannigan: a senior data scientist at a start-up in Belfast called Analytics Engines. His PhD was in ocean sciences and he did a number of postdocs before his current job.\n– Dr Robin Andrews: a freelance science journalist. His PhD was in volcanology and his journalism focuses on volcanoes\, earthquakes and planetary science.\n– Dr Ashleigh Massam: a process architect for JBA Risk Management. Her role includes research and development\, data analysis and hydraulic modelling. SUMMARY:Webinar: The impacts of Covid-19 on Mining Regions and Cities
DESCRIPTION:The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed and effected mining regions and cities in different ways. The mining sector\, highly dependent on the commodity market\, is especially exposed to external shocks\, threatening jobs\, income levels and living standards at the local level. \nMining regions are exposed on two fronts by the economic crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic. On the offer/production side\, the lockdown measures hinder normal working conditions and inputs supply throughout the mining value chain as well as investments in specific security and distancing measures\, which together can affect production levels. On the demand side\, the global drop of manufacturing and construction activity can reduce the demand for minerals and metals\, which may lead to disruptions in the value chain. These effects can particularly affect mining communities with low economic diversity\, threatening local jobs and income. \nThis virtual discussion\, organised by MIREU and the OECD\, will explore the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic on mining regions and the responses and opportunities emerging from this crisis. Mining regions may be exposed to the global economic downturn and must be prepared to respond to the effects on the income and welfare of their populations if they occur. This virtual discussion will serve as a platform to share experiences on the various mining regions and cities’ responses to the COVID-19 crisis (in the short and medium-term) and discuss opportunities to increase the resilience of mining communities for future shocks. \nThe meeting will take place on Zoom\, please register here. SUMMARY:Embedding Gender at the heart of Responsible Mining
DESCRIPTION:The presence of mining companies can heighten gender inequalities within the affected area. Mining companies not only have a responsibility to ‘do no harm’ in this respect\, but also have an interest in enabling women and girls to fulfil their potential and have access to actively participate in socio-cultural life and in the development of the local economy. \nBy embedding gender at the heart of their activities\, mining companies can show they follow the Gender Guidance for the Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights that calls for the “integration of gender equality as a cross-cutting issue in all policies\, processes and strategies across all departments\, rather than treating it merely as a diversity or inclusion issue relevant only for the human resources department.” \nRepresentatives from different stakeholder groups will share reflections on the impacts of mining on women\, the main challenges and the opportunities for continuous improvement. \nPlease register here.

SUMMARY:GeoConnect³d – Framing groundwater management
DESCRIPTION:Groundwater is a crucial resource for humankind\, as well as for natural ecosystems. Therefore\, any subsurface use considers how it will affect shallow groundwater reserves. At least\, that is how it should be\, because these interactions are complex and uncertain. \nThis problem is approached by two GeoERA projects. VoGERA is a groundwater project that looks unidirectionally how groundwater is affected and aims at building generic schemes aided by results from case studies. DESCRIPTION:The digital Policy Conference of EUSEW 2020 will take place online between 23 and 25 June 2020. \nRegistration will launch in June! \nThe Policy Conference is the biggest European conference dedicated to renewables and efficient energy use in Europe.
