DESCRIPTION:Up to 70% of scientists will transition to careers outside of academia after their PhD. Transferable scientific skills and knowledge are becoming progressively valued in non-academic job sectors. However\, navigating job opportunities and transitioning to different career paths can be difficult. This webinar will focus on the career paths of four scientists\, from a background of science areas\, who are working in non-academic sectors. The panellists will talk about their journey in finding careers\, tips for transitioning and what skills are particularly valuable to non-academic industries. There will be plenty of time for questions from the audience. \nSpeakers:\n– Dr Liam Brannigan: a senior data scientist at a start-up in Belfast called Analytics Engines. His PhD was in ocean sciences and he did a number of postdocs before his current job.\n– Dr Robin Andrews: a freelance science journalist. His PhD was in volcanology and his journalism focuses on volcanoes\, earthquakes and planetary science.\n– Dr Ashleigh Massam: a process architect for JBA Risk Management. Her role includes research and development\, data analysis and hydraulic modelling. SUMMARY:Webinar: The impacts of Covid-19 on Mining Regions and Cities
DESCRIPTION:The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed and effected mining regions and cities in different ways. The mining sector\, highly dependent on the commodity market\, is especially exposed to external shocks\, threatening jobs\, income levels and living standards at the local level. \nMining regions are exposed on two fronts by the economic crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic. On the offer/production side\, the lockdown measures hinder normal working conditions and inputs supply throughout the mining value chain as well as investments in specific security and distancing measures\, which together can affect production levels. On the demand side\, the global drop of manufacturing and construction activity can reduce the demand for minerals and metals\, which may lead to disruptions in the value chain. These effects can particularly affect mining communities with low economic diversity\, threatening local jobs and income. \nThis virtual discussion\, organised by MIREU and the OECD\, will explore the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic on mining regions and the responses and opportunities emerging from this crisis. Mining regions may be exposed to the global economic downturn and must be prepared to respond to the effects on the income and welfare of their populations if they occur. This virtual discussion will serve as a platform to share experiences on the various mining regions and cities’ responses to the COVID-19 crisis (in the short and medium-term) and discuss opportunities to increase the resilience of mining communities for future shocks. \nThe meeting will take place on Zoom\, please register here. DESCRIPTION:The presence of mining companies can heighten gender inequalities within the affected area. Mining companies not only have a responsibility to ‘do no harm’ in this respect\, but also have an interest in enabling women and girls to fulfil their potential and have access to actively participate in socio-cultural life and in the development of the local economy. \nBy embedding gender at the heart of their activities\, mining companies can show they follow the Gender Guidance for the Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights that calls for the “integration of gender equality as a cross-cutting issue in all policies\, processes and strategies across all departments\, rather than treating it merely as a diversity or inclusion issue relevant only for the human resources department.” \nRepresentatives from different stakeholder groups will share reflections on the impacts of mining on women\, the main challenges and the opportunities for continuous improvement. \nPlease register here.

DESCRIPTION:Groundwater is a crucial resource for humankind\, as well as for natural ecosystems. Therefore\, any subsurface use considers how it will affect shallow groundwater reserves. At least\, that is how it should be\, because these interactions are complex and uncertain. \nThis problem is approached by two GeoERA projects. DESCRIPTION:In Europe\, there are endless geologic features with significant scientific\, educational\, cultural\, and/or aesthetic value. These areas are commonly well-known by local communities\, but rarely incorporated into geological models. GeoConnect³d is a cross-disciplinary project\, funded under the GeoERA geo-energy theme\, with a focus on providing relevant geological context for anyone interested in geology at surface and subsurface. This is being done through the structural framework model and annotated geomanifestations\, which define any distinct local expression of ongoing or past geological processes. Participation in such lectures will be free of charge for everyone. In parallel with the peatland congress\, international peatlands and peat related movie festival will be held. SUMMARY:Environmental Impact 2020: 5th International Conference on Environmental and Economic Impact on Sustainable Development
DESCRIPTION:The 5th International Conference on Environmental and Economic Impact on Sustainable Development follows the success of four previous meetings held in the New Forest\, UK\, (home of the Wessex Institute of Technology) in 2012; Ancona\, Italy in 2014; Valencia\, Spain in 2016; and Naples\, Italy in 2018. \nThe meeting will provide an international forum to discuss the most serious problems affecting sustainable development. The Conference will consider the impact of economic constraints on the environment\, taking into account the social aspects as well as the over-use of natural resources. Uncontrolled development can also result in damage to the environment in terms of the release of toxic substances and hazardous waste. \nThe meeting will examine issues related to whether some forms of development are compatible with environmental protection\, particularly in cases of possible serious contamination and toxicity. \nThe conference will address problems of great importance discussing more constructive and progressive approaches to ensure sustainability. A major motivation for the meeting is to learn from past failure\, to avoid repeating similar mistakes\, while attempting to prevent emerging threats to environmental and ecological systems. \nFundamental to these concepts is the analysis of the inherent risk and the development of appropriate strategies. \nAll published papers from previous meetings are permanently archived in the Wessex Institute eLibrary (www.witpress.com/elibrary) where they are freely available to the international community \nTopics\nThe following list covers some of the topics to be presented at Environmental Impact 2020. SUMMARY:Workshop: ‘Uncertainty Quantification and Visualization in Geological modelling’
DESCRIPTION:As a kick-off of the coming EAGE Annual Meeting in Amsterdam (8-11 June 2020)\, we draw to your attention a workshop on ‘Uncertainty Quantification and Visualization in Geological modelling’ organised by the Dutch European Geologists Denise Maljers\, Johan ten Veen\, Jan Stafleu and Freek Busschers (TNO – Geological Survey of the Netherlands).  \nThis full-day workshop will cover all aspects of uncertainty related to geological models. Topics include model accuracy\, model precision and the visualization and communication of these uncertainties for geological models ranging from detailed reservoir models to regional scale multi-purpose models. \nThe workshop is aimed at geoscientists and policymakers that deal with uncertainties\, by bridging gaps between producing uncertainty information and understanding and using it. \nThe uncertainty in these models has different sources\, ranging from uncertainties related to wells\, i.e. metadata and interpretation\, seismics\, i.e. 2D or 3D\, vintage\, velocity model\, fault model\, property modelling\, etc. But also even less quantifiable sources as geological knowledge used in the modelling process. Furthermore\, what would be the best way to communicate these uncertainties\, using statistical measures\, diagrams\, cross-sections? \nIn this workshop we start with a morning session for non-specialists by giving mini-lectures on accuracy\, precision and visualization\, given by Florian Wellmann and by Bjorn Zehner. For the afternoon session we invite all interested in the topic to submit an abstract for an oral presentation to present case-studies showcasing the important role of the quantification of uncertainties or the visualization of uncertainties. \nAbstract submission deadline: February 15th 2020

DESCRIPTION:This is  a course endorsed by EFG. \nOutline of content \nThe production of waste is a problem that has always accompanied the human being. In the last few decades\, this problem has become increasingly larger and more difficult to control. For this reason\, ways of minimizing this waste have been created over the past few years. At the same time\, the techniques used have evolved so that the storage of different types of waste is less harmful to the environment. However\, many wastes have been stored improperly for many years. Therefore\, to identify places contaminated by these residues. there are more innovative ways to detect them without having to use invasive methods. SUMMARY:Responsible Raw Materials Conference 2020
DESCRIPTION:Population growth\, coupled with our evolving needs and desires for new technology – including that powering the green economy – mean that society is going to continue using non-renewable natural resources for centuries to come.  Although a circular economy is often cited as the preferential situation\, it is currently leaky and needs feeding in the first instance. A transition to sustainable energy also requires more – and more obscure – elements than have been used before\, giving rise to the term ‘critical metals’. \nExtraction of raw materials through activities such as mining is therefore crucial to human survival and the green transition. Moving past the negative perception of mining\, which is already acknowledged as an industry challenge\, the real question is now “how to do it with maximum benefit and minimum impact?”.  \nWhile mining activities have been undertaken and honed for thousands of years\, there is still much more we can do to ensure that we mine in the most responsible manner possible\, across the value chain from artisanal diggings to large-scale industrial mines. In order for mining to become truly responsible\, it needs long term commitment\, support and leadership from all stakeholders inclusive of mining companies\, investors and regulators.  To date\, this has proven difficult\, in part due to differing opinions on how responsibility might be interpreted\, measured\, and rewarded. \nAttempts to reconcile initiatives have been welcomed\, but so far frameworks have not always provided enough practical change in operations and footprint. By providing the means for different stakeholders to contribute to a conversation\, we aim to produce a repository of up-to-date information that can be tapped\, so that it is possible to develop a streamlined\, industry-accepted notion\, with specific criteria and quantification methodology.

SUMMARY:MOOC on Climate Change: Carbon Capture and Storage
DESCRIPTION:The atmosphere is a shared resource and the amount of greenhouse gases it can absorb is a finite resource. This introductory course to the technology of Carbon Capture and Storage is designed for a wider audience with an interest in energy\, sustainability and climate change. \nThe aim of Carbon Capture and Storage is to achieve \n\nDeep reductions in carbon dioxide emissions to the atmosphere\nUnlock carbon negative solutions to achieve a neutral carbon balance to the atmosphere in the 21st century\n\nCarbon Capture and Storage makes cheap\, widely available fossil fuels ‘safe to use’ in the context of the Paris Climate Change agreement of 2015. It prevents their carbon dioxide emissions from entering the atmosphere to store them permanently and safely underground. \nThe course is taught by a team of leading academics at the University of Edinburgh with decades of experience in this field. It aims to bridge the gap between the forefront of the latest developments in science\, engineering\, geology\, policy and economics\, and the wider public.

DESCRIPTION:EGU General Assembly 2021 to be held virtually\nThis virtual event will be an entirely different experience from last year’s meeting\, Sharing Geoscience Online\, which we had just five weeks to plan. vEGU21 will provide a much more complete representation of the experience that EGU members enjoy at the annual meeting in Vienna. \nvEGU21\, which will be accessible from around the globe\, will feature the 2020 and 2021 awards ceremonies and lectures\, mentoring\, networking events\, and many more activities in addition to nearly 700 scientific sessions. The current plan is to extend the meeting dates to 19–30 April but to schedule all technical sessions during the last week of April. \nWith this announcement\, EGU and its conference partner\, Copernicus Meetings\, are opening the meeting’s call for abstracts on 3 November 2020. These will be accepted until 13 January 2021 at 13:00 CET. The Abstract Processing Charge (APC) will remain the same as in previous years.
