SUMMARY:REIA 3rd LCA Workshop: Scaling Rare Earths for a Sustainable World
DESCRIPTION:Rare earths are critical metals\, which various green technologies heavily depend on. How to scale rare earth industry for our sustainable future? At present\, there is no single environmental footprint representing the rare earth sector. Thus\, when the industry and its consumers wish to market themselves as environmentally friendly\, they face a confusing range of choices and methods for environmental evaluation. We also need a framework to allow us to carry out LCAs with a consistent methodology and the project data should be integrated with downstream users and end-of-life it. REIA invites experts for their valuable experience and insights for sustainable policies and practices toward a green rare earth industry. Polestar will present the latest environmental footprint analysis comparing their electric and Volvo ICE models along with other speakers. Please join us for this online training workshop featuring leading researchers sharing their insights into these increasingly significant issues for modeling REEs in Life Cycle Assessment.

SUMMARY:Beyond LCOE: Value of technologies in different generation and grid scenarios
DESCRIPTION:Since its introduction\, the levelised cost of electricity (LCOE) has become ubiquitous in the evaluation and comparison of power generation technologies. While it is a readily accessible metric\, it focuses exclusively on the cost of electricity produced from an asset and neglects to address the provision of ancillary services that are vital for the reliable operation of an electricity grid.\nThis simplification was entirely appropriate for the electricity system of the 20th century\, dominated at it was by fossil fuels and nuclear technologies\, but it falls well short as a metric to compare technologies in a system to provide net-zero emissions by the mid-21st century. In this study\, the various concepts that have been proposed as alternatives to LCOE have been evaluated and the potential for a concept that balances completeness and ease of use explored.

SUMMARY:European Shallow Geothermal Days
DESCRIPTION:Heat represents more than half of Europe’s energy needs and the vast majority of it comes from fossil fuels. Shallow geothermal energy can be the key to decarbonise heating and cooling\, being a clean and mature technology that could be installed anywhere in Europe. Yet\, it is widely considered as a niche technology\, even if in a few countries such as Sweden and Finland\, is becoming mainstream and 2 million geothermal heat pumps have already been installed. \nThe 2nd edition of the “European Shallow Geothermal Energy Days” will connect policy makers\, scientists and professionals to discuss ways to boost the market uptake of geothermal heat pumps and underground thermal energy storage.

SUMMARY:Responding to societal needs with 3-D geology: An international perspective
DESCRIPTION:The Geological Survey of Canada\, Illinois State Geological Survey\, British Geological Survey\, Alberta Geological Survey\, Minnesota Geological Survey\, and TNO\, Geological Survey of the Netherlands have organized a two-part webinar series on how Geological Survey Organizations (GSOs) have been helping society face economic and environmental challenges for over 150 years. The technological transformation of geoscience is presenting new opportunities for GSOs\, and the wider geoscience community\, to respond to the societal challenges of our time\, and lay the foundation for a sustainable future. Three-dimensional geological modelling is providing a valuable tool for informed decision making and risk reduction – from planning urban infrastructure\, managing ground water resources\, and sourcing renewable energy. To capitalize on this capability\, new data infrastructures are required to share and integrate information across government and the private sector. \nThis two-part webinar series will feature leaders in the field\, presenting the latest developments\, and will be of interest to students\, academics\, private sector practitioners\, and other government agencies. \nPart 1: Tuesday\, November 17\, 2020 10h00 EST / 16h00 CET | 1 hour 45 min\nPart 2: Thursday\, November 19\, 2020 10h00 EST / 16h00 CET | 1 hour 45 min

SUMMARY:GeoERA Webinar Series: Towards a Geological Service for Europe
DESCRIPTION:Whether it concerns reliable energy supply\, access to raw materials for products we use in our day-to-day activities\, clean groundwater sustaining society and biodiversity but threatened by climate change or safety in urban areas\, many solutions lie dormant under the Earth’s surface or are directly connected to the subsurface. \nThe Geological Surveys of Europe are addressing society’s concerns by developing innovative solutions within the GeoERA research network in partnership with some other organisations. Through the umbrella organisation\, EuroGeoSurveys these solutions are part of the roadmap towards establishing a Geological Service for Europe. \nAfter all\, the subsurface is deeply integrated with our daily lives\, from energy production and storage\, to sustainable heating and cooling\, critical and sustainable raw materials\, construction materials and sustainable supply of water for society and nature. The underground provides a vital link to many essential new technologies and solutions that are challenging the geoscience and indeed all science communities to address the global climate goals and the targets of the European Green Deal. \nTogether with our key partners and stakeholders\, we want to investigate the role of subsurface information in the R&D value chain. What services are needed and how can we improve the embedding of our research results? \nWe will therefore conduct a webinar series\, scheduled to take place in the week of 9-13 November 2020. It will be spread over 5 sessions\, beginning with an overarching session on the grand challenges faced by society and how geoscience can play a key role in addressing them. The topics will be fleshed out by four thematic sessions focused on clean energy\, groundwater\, mineral raw materials and information management. \nThe webinars will provide an insight into the current research projects of GeoERA and will include insights from guest speakers to highlight the relevant links between geosciences and their sectors. How their results and products can be of use to the stakeholder community as well as the current EU policy objectives will form part of the discussion\, while also delving into future needs and opportunities for collaboration.
