SUMMARY:Energy Transition Europe
DESCRIPTION:Leadership In the Age of Transition\nWe are in the midst of a dramatic paradigm shift. The world has awoken to climate change; the time for the energy industry to stand up and be counted has arrived. The way in which we produce\, distribute and use energy will undergo a radical transformation over the next two decades. \nReuters Events Energy Transition Summit unites leaders and experts from across the public and private sectors to tackle the Energy Transition head on; to shed light on the defining issue of our time and help energy companies meet a uniquely difficult challenge. That is\, to be both an energy company of today\, and the energy companies of tomorrow. \nThis 2-day strategic summit will shed light upon how the transition will be led\, governed\, and financed. We’ll establish what the future energy system will look like and offer companies\, from across the asset spectrum\, a definitive guide to their ET strategies\, combining onstage inspiration and offstage Chatham House Rule Discussions. \nThe Energy Transition will be a period defined by uncertainty. We can\, together\, lighten the way forward.

SUMMARY:Responding to societal needs with 3-D geology: An international perspective
DESCRIPTION:The Geological Survey of Canada\, Illinois State Geological Survey\, British Geological Survey\, Alberta Geological Survey\, Minnesota Geological Survey\, and TNO\, Geological Survey of the Netherlands have organized a two-part webinar series on how Geological Survey Organizations (GSOs) have been helping society face economic and environmental challenges for over 150 years. The technological transformation of geoscience is presenting new opportunities for GSOs\, and the wider geoscience community\, to respond to the societal challenges of our time\, and lay the foundation for a sustainable future. Three-dimensional geological modelling is providing a valuable tool for informed decision making and risk reduction – from planning urban infrastructure\, managing ground water resources\, and sourcing renewable energy. To capitalize on this capability\, new data infrastructures are required to share and integrate information across government and the private sector. \nThis two-part webinar series will feature leaders in the field\, presenting the latest developments\, and will be of interest to students\, academics\, private sector practitioners\, and other government agencies. \nPart 1: Tuesday\, November 17\, 2020 10h00 EST / 16h00 CET | 1 hour 45 min\nPart 2: Thursday\, November 19\, 2020 10h00 EST / 16h00 CET | 1 hour 45 min

SUMMARY:GeoERA Webinar Series: Towards a Geological Service for Europe
DESCRIPTION:Whether it concerns reliable energy supply\, access to raw materials for products we use in our day-to-day activities\, clean groundwater sustaining society and biodiversity but threatened by climate change or safety in urban areas\, many solutions lie dormant under the Earth’s surface or are directly connected to the subsurface. \nThe Geological Surveys of Europe are addressing society’s concerns by developing innovative solutions within the GeoERA research network in partnership with some other organisations. Through the umbrella organisation\, EuroGeoSurveys these solutions are part of the roadmap towards establishing a Geological Service for Europe. \nAfter all\, the subsurface is deeply integrated with our daily lives\, from energy production and storage\, to sustainable heating and cooling\, critical and sustainable raw materials\, construction materials and sustainable supply of water for society and nature. The underground provides a vital link to many essential new technologies and solutions that are challenging the geoscience and indeed all science communities to address the global climate goals and the targets of the European Green Deal. \nTogether with our key partners and stakeholders\, we want to investigate the role of subsurface information in the R&D value chain. What services are needed and how can we improve the embedding of our research results? \nWe will therefore conduct a webinar series\, scheduled to take place in the week of 9-13 November 2020. It will be spread over 5 sessions\, beginning with an overarching session on the grand challenges faced by society and how geoscience can play a key role in addressing them. The topics will be fleshed out by four thematic sessions focused on clean energy\, groundwater\, mineral raw materials and information management. \nThe webinars will provide an insight into the current research projects of GeoERA and will include insights from guest speakers to highlight the relevant links between geosciences and their sectors. How their results and products can be of use to the stakeholder community as well as the current EU policy objectives will form part of the discussion\, while also delving into future needs and opportunities for collaboration.

SUMMARY:WEBINAR SERIES: Towards a Responsible Supply Chain for Electronics - Webinar 3: Trade union rights in the global electronics industry: the case of Indonesia
DESCRIPTION:The right to organise is often denied to workers in the electronics industry. In key electronics production sites like China and Vietnam\, the only union that workers are allowed to join is the state-sanctioned union. But even in countries where union rights are protected by law\, like Indonesia\, workers often find it difficult to exercise this right. This webinar presents field research from Bekasi\, Indonesia’s prime industrial area just outside Jakarta. Looking at four different electronic factories\, the webinar discusses the multiple barriers workers’ face when they seek to exercise their right to freedom of association and the strategies different Indonesian unions have developed in response. \nSpeakers: Jeroen Merk (University of Edinburgh)\, Hari Nugroho (University of Indonesia) &  Fahmi Panimbang (LIPS).  \nModerator: Dave Gorman (University of Edinburgh).

SUMMARY:WEBINAR SERIES: Towards a Responsible Supply Chain for Electronics - Webinar 2: Artisanal and Small-scale Mining as part of a fair global supply chain
DESCRIPTION:Artisanal and Small-scale Mining (ASM) represents the majority of the workforce engaged in mining activities worldwide. While it is often seen as an informal subsistence activity for local communities\, ASM is actually very well integrated in the global metal supply chain. This kind of mining operation is sometimes referred to as the most ‘sustainable’ socio-economic way of exploiting metal ores against its depletion\, while it also can cause enormous uncontrolled health and environmental impacts that affect workers and local communities. \nThis webinar presents one case study of ASM and discusses the local impacts and how their integration in the international market could be a lever to engage other stakeholders towards positive change through enhanced due diligence\, monitoring and collaboration. \nSpeakers: Prof Erik Smolders (KU Leuven)\, Boris Verbruggen (KU Leuven) & Alberto Vázquez Ruiz (CATAPA).  \nModerator: Piet Wostyn (KU Leuven)

SUMMARY:Water Pollution 2020: 15th International Conference on Monitoring\, Modelling and Management of Water Pollution
DESCRIPTION:Water Pollution 2020 is the 15th International Conference in the series of Monitoring\, Modelling and Management of Water Pollution. The conference\, which has always been very successful\, provides a forum for discussion amongst scientists\, managers and academics from different areas of water contamination. The wealth of information exchanged in this international meeting continues to be of great benefit to all involved with water pollution problems. \nThe environmental problems caused by the increase of pollutant loads discharged into natural water bodies requires the formation of a framework for regulation and control. This framework needs to be based on scientific results that relate pollutant discharge with changes in water quality. The results of these studies allow the industry to apply more efficient methods of controlling and treating waste loads\, and water authorities to enforce appropriate regulations regarding this matter. \nEnvironmental problems are essentially interdisciplinary. Engineers and scientists working in this field must be familiar with a wide range of issues including the physical processes of mixing and dilution\, chemical and biological processes\, mathematical modelling\, data acquisition and measurement\, to name but a few. In view of the scarcity of available data\, it is important that experiences are shared on an international basis. Thus\, a continuous exchange of information between scientists from different countries is essential. \nThe Water Pollution Conference started in Southampton\, UK in 1991 and has been held in Milan\, Italy (1993); Porto Carras\, Greece (1995); Lake Bled\, Slovenia (1997); Lemnos\, Greece (1999); Rhodes\, Greece (2001); Cadiz\, Spain (2003); Bologna\, Italy (2006); Alicante\, Spain (2008); Bucharest\, Romania (2010); The New Forest\, UK\, home of the Wessex Institute (2012); the Algarve (2014)\, Venice (2016) and A Coruna (2018). \nAll published papers since 1993 have been widely distributed and archived in the eLibrary where they are permanently and freely available to the scientific community (www.witpress.com/elibrary). \nTopics\nThe following list covers some of the topics to be presented at the conference. Papers on other subjects related to the objectives of the conference are also welcome. \n\nWater contamination\nAssessing\, monitoring\, modelling and forecasting\nWater management\nWastewater and saltwater management\nGroundwater and aquifers\nFreshwater quality\nCoastal and offshore pollution\nHealth risk studies\nAgricultural contamination\nIndustrial pollution\nWater reuse\nEmerging technologies\nSocio-economic-political causes and consequences\nEducation and training\nPharmaceuticals\nMicro-pollutants\nChanges in land use\nDredging work\nClimate change\nDesign and architecture\nUrban water\nSustainable urban drainage systems\nCase Studies

SUMMARY:FRIAR 2020: 7th International Conference on Flood and Urban Water Management
DESCRIPTION:FRIAR 2020 is the seventh conference of this successful series. The conference started at the Institution of Civil Engineers in London 2008 and was reconvened in Milan in 2010\, Dubrovnik in 2012\, Poznan in 2014\, Venice in 2016 and A Coruna 2018. Since 2012 a parallel seminar on the Design\, Construction\, Maintenance\, Monitoring and Control of Urban Water has taken place which is now an integral part of the conference. \nThe meeting aims to attract researchers\, academics and practitioners actively involved in improving our understanding of urban water systems and flood events. \nFlooding is a global phenomenon that claims numerous lives worldwide each year. Apart from the physical damage to buildings\, contents and loss of life\, which are the most obvious\, impacts of floods upon households and other more indirect losses are often overlooked. These indirect and intangible impacts are generally associated with disruption to normal life and longer term health issues. Flooding represents a major barrier to the alleviation of poverty in many parts of the developing world\, where vulnerable communities are often exposed to sudden and life-threatening events. \nAs our cities continue to expand\, their urban infrastructures need to be re-evaluated and adapted to new requirements related to the increase in population and the growing areas under urbanization. Topics such as contamination and pollution discharges in urban water bodies\, as well as the monitoring of water recycling systems are currently receiving a great deal of attention from researchers and professional engineers working in the water industry. This conference also considers these problems and deals with two main urban water topics: water supply networks and urban drainage. \nFRIAR 2020 will generate an improved understanding of emerging flood risk management and urban water management challenges\, drawing on the expertise of numerous disciplines and considering a range of responses. The conference provides a rich forum for the development of innovative solutions that can help bring about multiple benefits toward achieving integrated flood risk and urban water management strategies and policy. \nPapers presented at this conference\, as all other meetings run by the Wessex Institute\, are archived in the Institute eLibrary (www.witpress.com/elibrary) and permanently and freely available to the international community. \nTopics\nThe following list covers some of the topics to be presented at the conference.
