SUMMARY:Core Values: the Role of Core in 21st Century Reservoir Characterisation
DESCRIPTION:Core has traditionally played a key role in the characterisation of conventional and unconventional hydrocarbon reservoirs\, from exploration to mature production. It is the only means by which to observe and make measurements on actual reservoir rock. However\, the recent oil industry downturn has driven many to question the value of taking core\, due to the associated increased costs and potential risks to well operations. In tandem\, advances in other reservoir visualisation techniques\, such as seismic and borehole imaging\, have been used to give weight to the contention that coring is an increasingly redundant means of characterising reservoirs. \nThrough four main themes this 3-day conference will aim to redress the balance in this debate by exploring the role core can\, or should\, play in the 21st century exploration to production cycle: \n• Is core critical to sound commercial decision making? \n• What are the challenges and benefits of integrating core-derived understanding across the geological\, petrophysical and engineering spectrum? \n• Integration of traditional core characterisation methods with new core\, well and reservoir visualisation and mapping technologies – is the sum greater than its parts? \n• How can the extensive network of global legacy core collections best be utilised to maximise their business and research worth? \nDedicated sessions will allow delegates to view core that has been central to addressing many key reservoir issues\, under the direct guidance of those responsible for meeting such challenges. Speakers are thus invited to bring core to illustrate their presentation\, and indicate if this is of interest when submitting an abstract.

SUMMARY:Certification of carbon removals: the first step towards an EU market mechanism for negative emissions
DESCRIPTION:The Commission scenarios show that the EU will have to rely on a substantial amount of carbon removals to reach climate neutrality by 2050 and achieve net-negative emissions thereafter. This is why the Commission is now designing an EU-wide carbon removal certification mechanism covering both nature-based and technological solutions. Removal of atmospheric or biogenic CO2 requires a GHG methodology and a regulatory framework that are formally separated from emissions reduction measures supporting capture\, use and storage of point source CO2. SUMMARY:EFG Webinar: Natural Hydrogen Resources
DESCRIPTION:On 15 April 2021\, EFG is organising the webinar ‘Natural Hydrogen Resources’.\n\n\n\nHydrogen has been present in the industry as a raw material for a long time and\, except for rocket takeoffs\, its energetic capacity was rarely used\, at least for the second part of the 20th century. The landscape is changing since green fuels are looked for to decrease the CO2 impact of mobility and to improve the air quality of cities. The use of H2 as fuel is growing and the demand for green hydrogen\, not manufactured from hydrocarbons\, is following the same trend. In that frame\, the production of native H2 appears as a promising alternative and exploration is starting in various countries after the fortuitous discoveries of accumulations in different places and the first years of production in Mali. It should be noted that some authors already informed the scientific community some time ago on this resource without receiving any attention from the extractive industry\, but times are changing. \nEven if some questions remain open\, the geological context that allows H2 generation in the subsurface is starting to be known and natural H2 has already been found in three geological tectonic settings: \n\n\nextension zones (Mid Oceanic Ridge\, Iceland\, and African Rift); \n\n\n\n\ncompression zones involving ophiolitic nappes (Oman\, Philippines\, New Caledonia); and \n\n\n\n\nstable intracratonic basins above Archean to Proterozoic basement (Brazil\, Russia\, USA\, Australia\, Mali). \n\n\nIn this webinar\, we will present a state of the art on the knowledge and open questions about this new resource. \nIsabelle Moretti\, senior researcher at the University of Pau and the Adour Region (UPPA)\, will be the presenter. She is a scientist with a master’s in mathematics and a PhD in earth science from the Paris XI University. Moretti was appointed as visiting scientist at Cornell University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She began her career in 1987 at the French Petroleum Institute (IFPen) where she worked on various projects in France and abroad. She worked in fundamental research but also developed professional software. She has interspersed her research and appraisal activities for industry (TOTAL\, CEPSA\, YPFB) with work for governmental entities (IRD\, CNRS\, ANR\, CEE\, Ancre). She is the author of more than 130 scientific papers and has given courses in various universities worldwide. She has been also the president of GERG (European Gas Research organization)\, a member of the board of Ineris (French National Institute for Industrial Environment and Risks) and BRGM (French Geological Survey) and an expert in various commissions. She is now leading a team dedicated to natural hydrogen at the UPPA where she is working on different case studies in Brazil\, Australia\, Iceland and the Afar region. \nThe webinar is scheduled for 5 – 6 PM CEST. \n\nPlease register for the free event here.

DESCRIPTION:On 8 April 2021\, EFG is organising the webinar ‘EU Strategy to Secure Access to Mineral Raw Materials’.\n\n\nVitor Correia\, Past President of EFG and Secretary-General of the International Raw Materials Observatory will be the presenter of the webinar. \nThe EU recently launched the European Raw Material Alliance\, a partnership between industry players\, EU countries and regions\, trade unions\, civil society\, research and technology organisations\, investors and NGOs to ‘reduce Europe’s dependency on third countries\, diversifying supply from both primary and secondary sources and improving resource efficiency and circularity while promoting responsible sourcing worldwide’. \nThis signals an evident concern from policymakers on the European industry dependency on raw materials imports from third countries. \nThere are two good reasons for this concern: \n\nDelivering the European Green Deal would require vast quantities of mineral raw materials;\nResources nationalism is rising (even inside the EU)\, alongside the international rivalry to securing access to mineral raw materials.\n\nIn this context\, would the EU exercise of “soft power”\, applying the principles of cooperation\, inclusiveness\, transparency and respect of trade and competition rules\, be sufficient to meet the European demand for mineral raw materials? SUMMARY:Science for Disaster Risk Management 2020: acting today\, protecting tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:The “Science for Disaster Risk Management 2020: acting today\, protecting tomorrow”\, the second of it series\, has been produced with the collaboration of more than 300 experts in disaster risk management. The participants come from different disciplines and sectors (from academia\, civil protection groups\, international organisations and the private sector\, among others) to provide the reader with accurate and updated information on the consequences that disasters have on key assets of society (population\, economic sectors\, critical infrastructures\, environment and cultural heritage) and how these can be managed. Based on all the information collected\, a set of recommendations are provided to four target groups of society (policymakers\, practitioners\, scientists\, citizens) to actively reduce disaster risk in the EU. \nThe authors of the report conclude that it is necessary to reinforce collaborative processes where stakeholders share their knowledge and co-create action\, paying particular attention to the role of citizens and the private sector. At the same time\, it is key to develop a frame to collect\, store and reuse data and information from the aftermath of a disaster to understand the drivers and conditions that lead to losses and damages and so plan more effective measures to protect our future. As the Report aims to move from identifying needs to showing solutions and approaches for action\, the launch event would be a good opportunity to engage with different stakeholders to explore how the proposed recommendations can be put into practice.

SUMMARY:Opportunities in CCS: Finding Government Funding and Business Partners
DESCRIPTION:2021 could well be The Year of CCS. The growth in CCS projects is being driven by many factors: an increasing realization of the dangers of climate change\, an acknowledgement of the important role CCS plays in net-zero scenarios\, decarbonization commitments from governments and business\, and increased financial investment from both. \nIncreased CCS investment by governments\, including funding of technology development\, means increased opportunities for business. But how does a business access this funding? How does one know where to look\, and how can a company position itself for success? And how do CO2 emitters and CCS technology and service providers find each other. \nIn this webinar\, we will look at how financial support from federal governments is driving both CCS technology advancements and the financing of demonstration projects. In the US\, the recently passed Energy Act of 2020 brings the potential of substantially more US Department of Energy funding opportunities for carbon capture. The government of the Netherlands has already begun the process of funding a new round of CCS projects in that country. This webinar will provide insights into navigating transatlantic government funding opportunities and identify the priorities for funding across various sectors.

DESCRIPTION:Geothermal energy is the most diverse renewable energy source\, being used for heating\, cooling\, electricity\, and even critical raw materials. In this high-level event\, the expert panel will discuss how investing in geothermal energy can support a just transition for those regions most dependent on fossil fuel energy systems.\nThrough the conversion of hydrocarbon infrastructure and the development of local clean energy projects\, the geothermal sector can provide a path to achieving the European Commission’s 55% emissions reduction target by 2030. Further\, some case studies from the Horizon 2020 GEOENVI project will offer concrete examples on how the geothermal just transition works in practice.

SUMMARY:Geo-Coat workshop on Materials Challenges in Geothermal Energy Production
DESCRIPTION:Can coatings help mitigate the material challenges in geothermal energy production? As part of the project Geo-Coat (funded by European Union’s Horizon\, Grant agreement 764086)\, novel corrosion- and erosion- resistant coatings based on selected High Entropy Alloys (HEAs) and Ceramic/Metal mixtures (Cermets) have been developed\, showing remarkable resistance to threats of geothermal operations. These coatings can be applied through standard coating techniques (primarily High Velocity Oxygen-Fuel and Laser cladding) and have been designed to provide the required bond strength\, hardness and density for challenging geothermal applications. \nAs the Geo-Coat project enters its final phase\, the consortium is pleased to invite to all geothermal enthusiasts to join a workshop: Geo-Coat: Materials Challenges in Geothermal Energy Production. \nThis event will present an overview of the Geo-Coat methodology to address the material challenges\, exciting results from in-situ durability testing of the coatings in real geothermal environments\, demonstration of flow assurance simulation models\, demonstration of economic impact of Geo-Coat through Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) results and benefits of using coatings as lessons learned by end user.

DESCRIPTION:On 18 March 2021\, EFG is organising the webinar ‘From Earth to Mars: Planetary Geology and Astrobiology’. \nEarth and planetary geosciences and astrogeological studies are proving to be of great help if not crucial in facing the challenging and fascinating questions whether or not Earth’s life is unique\, and the links between life on Earth and the potential for life on other planets. At present\, there are a great variety of astrogeological aspects (e.g. planetary analogs)\, which connect this discipline with astrobiology\, mainly in relation with the characterization of planetary paleo-environments and their habitability conditions. 2021 has been defined as the Year of Mars with three spaceships arriving and focused on the study of the Red Planet. \nVitor Correia\, Past President of EFG and the Secretary-General of the International Raw Materials Observatory\, will be the host of the webinar. \nDr Jesús Martínez Frías will be the presenter. He is a scientific researcher at the Institute of Geosciences (CSIC-UCM) where he is the head of the Research Group on Meteorites and Planetary Geology. Jesús is also the director of the Geosciences Laboratory of Lanzarote\, and the founder and president of the Spanish Network of Planetary Science and Astrobiology and the Geological Society of Spain Planetary Geology Commission. In addition\, he is an honorary professor at the Department of Bioengineering and Aerospace Engineering at Carlos III University in Madrid and a scientific collaborator of the Planetary Habitability Laboratory of the University of Puerto Rico in Arecibo. SUMMARY:6th Annual Innovation in Tunnels: Construction\, Maintenance\, Safety & Fire Protection
DESCRIPTION:With over 55 live tenders for construction/development of new tunnels in just Spain\, Switzerland\, Italy and Belgium at the time of writing this\, it is safe to say that tunnel construction/ development is growing at a very fast rate.  Our last 3 Annuals on Tunnels were based around Fire and Safety\, our 4th had a slight twist where we touched on the maintenance as well as the safety aspect of tunnels as the title suggests. The 5th Annual was in Chamonix and we had two technical tours of one of the most famous tunnels in the world – The Mont Blanc Tunnel and the other of a partially built tunnel by Telt. \nEnigmaCG’s 6th Annual Webinar on Innovation in Tunnels: Construction\, Maintenance\, Safety & Fire Protection touches on all aspects of a tunnel.
