SUMMARY:Advances in critical mineral research: A forum in memory of Victor Labson
DESCRIPTION:New critical mineral deposits are required to secure the supply of natural resources that are used in today’s advanced technologies. The discovery and sustainable development of these new deposits represents a global chal­lenge. Governments and international geological survey organizations are responding by improved multinational cooperation\, data sharing\, and through investments in geoscientific research. This Critical Minerals Forum brings together representatives from multiple geological surveys organizations to provide an update on the latest geoscience results and to discuss future critical mineral research. \nPresentations will focus on advanced mineral system models that are appli­cable to critical minerals and new methods for modelling mineral potential in buried\, remote\, and/or other challenging mineral exploration settings. Both of these research themes are included within the new Critical Mineral Mapping Initiative that is being conducted between the Geological Survey of Canada\, Geoscience Australia\, and the United States Geological Survey. Global efforts to expand this collaboration\, including the development of an online geo­chemical portal for critical mineral deposits\, will be discussed as part of this special session and is open to further contributions\, research\, and analysis. \nFormat \nThe Critical Minerals Forum will be hosted as a set of three regional sessions (Americas\, Europe and Africa\, and Asia and Oceania). DESCRIPTION:The European Commission will be hosting EU Industry Week in February and the Global CCS Institute is excited to take part. Virtual webinars and sessions part of the event will focus on overcoming economic and social challenges within a post-Covid reality\, particularly as it relates to European industrial ecosystems. \nThe Global CCS Institute will hold an event to discuss Europe’s 2050 net-zero target and the role CCS will play in decarbonising industry. \nIndustry accounts for nearly a quarter of the world’s emissions and decisive action is being taken try to change that. This online session will convene European-based industry leaders to discuss the current state of climate action plans in energy intensive sectors and assess how it will support Europe’s overall plan to reach net zero.

DESCRIPTION:On 24 February 2021\, EFG is organising the webinar ‘Mineral resources of Sweden’. \n \nSweden is well known for its raw material resources and active mining industry. Swedish ore production represents a significant part of the EU mining sector and the associated Swedish industry cluster producing mining equipment lists several companies of worldwide reputation. Historically iron ore\, noble and base metals have been mined\, but the potential for other emerging critical raw materials such as REE is high. This webinar aims to present the mineral resources and mining industry of Sweden in a historical and geological context\, but also take a glance at future potential and discuss related problems and difficulties. \n Eurogeologist Magnus Johansson will be the presenter. Magnus is chair of the geoscientists branch of the Swedish Association of Professional Scientists and member of the EFG Panel of Experts on Minerals. He has spent more than 10 years in the mining and minerals sector and has a wide experience from other areas totalling some 15+ years. SUMMARY:SEG-AGU Advances in Distributed Sensing for Geophysics Virtual Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Geophysical data acquisition is currently undergoing a quiet revolution driven by new advances in distributed sensing approaches based on fiber optics\, inexpensive nodal systems\, and ubiquitous sensors embedded in the Internet of Things. The commonality between these approaches is the capacity to economically conduct ultra-high-density measurements at scales above 1000 sensing locations\, providing an unaliased view of seismic wavefields as well as other measurands including strain and temperature. Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing (DxS) and Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) in particular are moving from specialized tools for vertical seismic profiling to broadly utilized approaches deployed in boreholes\, on the surface\, and now on the seafloor with application domains in seismology\, hydrogeology\, and oceanography\, as well as applied geophysics. With this rapid growth in measurement density have come new challenges in data management and analysis requiring focused development of approaches for identifying patterns and extracting information from these massive datasets\, potentially exploiting machine learning methodologies. \nThis workshop seeks to bring together researchers from industry\, academia\, and the public sector involved in exploiting these recent sensing advances with the broader geoscience community to explore both the underlying technologies as well as new domains for distributed sensor deployment. The format of the workshop is intended to foster lively discussion and interaction\, and includes an evening poster session to facilitate longer debates.

SUMMARY:Beyond LCOE: Value of technologies in different generation and grid scenarios
DESCRIPTION:Since its introduction\, the levelised cost of electricity (LCOE) has become ubiquitous in the evaluation and comparison of power generation technologies. While it is a readily accessible metric\, it focuses exclusively on the cost of electricity produced from an asset and neglects to address the provision of ancillary services that are vital for the reliable operation of an electricity grid.\nThis simplification was entirely appropriate for the electricity system of the 20th century\, dominated at it was by fossil fuels and nuclear technologies\, but it falls well short as a metric to compare technologies in a system to provide net-zero emissions by the mid-21st century. In this study\, the various concepts that have been proposed as alternatives to LCOE have been evaluated and the potential for a concept that balances completeness and ease of use explored.
