SUMMARY:12th International SedNet Conference
DESCRIPTION:The SedNet 2021 conference “Sediment Challenges and Opportunities due to Climate Change and Sustainable Development” will take place online from 29 June – 3 July 2021. \nSediments found in upland streams\, industrialised waterways\, busy coastal zones and offshore waters are characterized by a wide variety of sediment properties in dynamic and less dynamic areas. These areas are inherently interlinked as sediment is transported from catchment to the open sea. The natural flow of sediment from mountainous regions to the ocean is strongly impacted by anthropogenic activities along this journey in terms of both the quantity that is transported and the quality of transporting waters. Sediment distribution is not only impacted by direct human influence but also indirectly as a result of changing weather and climate patterns. A change in sediment dynamics leading to sediment starvation or sediment accumulation is often the concern of river basin and coastal managers who constantly need to adapt to these environmental variations. Often overlooked\, there may be direct and indirect effects of climate change on sediment quality\, too. More frequent flash floods may erode deeper and older\, more contaminated sediment layers and spread it onto flood plains. Increased UV radiation may change degradation of contaminants. Increased water temperatures will have an effect of contaminant transfer in the food chain. Little information is currently available to predict whether sediment managers will have to cope with greater or different quality problems in future due to the climatic changes.

\nOrganisateurs : I. Moretti (UPPA)\, F. Brunet (ISTerre)\, V. Zgonnik (NH2E) \nhttps://geosoc.fr/manifestation-sgf/agenda-des-reunions-colloques-sgf/event/2559-l-hydrogene-naturel-etat-de-la-recherche-en-france.html

SUMMARY:Is China taking control of African minerals? Geopolitics and raw materials
DESCRIPTION:Chinese companies are far from taking control over African or global mining. In 2018\, they control less than 7 % of total African mine production. Chinese investments in African mining of non-fuel minerals between 1995 and 2018 have contributed to production growth but it has also increased Chinese control over African mineral and metal production. There is evidence pointing to a continued Chinese expansion in African minerals and metals but at a slower pace than in the past decade. Through a detailed analysis of every mine\, fully or partially controlled by Chinese interest in Africa and all other parts of the world the paper also measures total Chinese control over global mine production to be around 3 % of the total value. \nMagnus Ericsson\, is a veteran observer and analyst of global mining his interests going back to the early 1970s. He is a consulting professor of mineral economics at Luleå University of Technology\, Sweden since 2009. Magnus’ key qualifications lie within the areas where mineral economics; mineral policy/strategy; mineral legislation and taxation cross. He has extensive experiences in investment promotion\, mineral policy formulation including taxation and legislative issues and their implementation\, institutional organization\, stock exchange regulations for mining companies and he regularly performs analyses of mineral industries and their competitiveness. Magnus has a wide network in China having visited the country regularly since early 2000s. \nThe participation is free\, but registration is required\, through the following registration form until 31 May 2021: \nhttps://forms.gle/7UFLixBt9Q8Gvpgc7

SUMMARY:All things energy forum
DESCRIPTION:The world is facing an unprecedented situation\, unlike anything after WWII. The key characteristics are Uncertainty and the convergence of six mega phenomena: \n\nA Sustained Pandemic: Covid does not seem to abate\, 3rd wave\, British variant\, problematic availability of vaccines\nEconomics: Huge stimulus sums are being spent but still a bleak forecast for a recovery\, outside China\nEnergy trade: an oil price plunge\, to even negative territories\, is now followed by uncertainty in demand and volatility in oil/gas prices\nInternational politics: US/China trade war\, Russian political frictions with EU\, seeking a balance between energy security\, economic and environmental goals in times of energy transition\nEnergy/Environment policies: EU–Green Deal proceeding at full speed\, but at the same time China/Asia are ordering new coal plants\nDisruptive technologies and emerging challenges: cybersecurity issues arise from increasing digitalization (hacking\, terrorism & insurance coverage)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs a result\,  some energy subsectors are favored by low-emissions policies: Renewable Energy Sources\, Hydrogen of the ‘green’ variety. Nuclear should be favored\, due to no carbon emissions\, but safety and cost problems exist. Other energy subsectors are challenged: coal\, tar sands\, oil especially upstream\, shale oil. Natural gas is a borderline energy subsector — a transition fuel. \nWhen the Covid-19 factor is superposed\, even the subsectors that are  theoretically favored are faced with problems of low demand and supply chain\, as well as administrative delays and obstacles to Foreign Direct Investments from specific countries. \nIndirectly but increasingly strongly\, the energy sector is also affected by the changing attitudes of banks and other financial institutions\, insurance companies\, hedge funds\, NGOs etc that are becoming more active in the direction of decarbonization. \nIn this framework\, the decisions of energy producing or consuming companies\, are hugely affected. Such decisions Include health and safety\, sales\, operations\, finance/cashflow\, risk management/communications\, CSR\, planning/strategy/energy transition.

SUMMARY:EU Green Week 2021
DESCRIPTION:Pollution affects everybody – through the air we breathe\, the water we drink or the land we grow our food on. It is the largest environmental cause of multiple mental and physical diseases\, and of premature deaths\, especially among children\, people with certain medical conditions and the elderly. But pollution does not affect everybody equally. People who live in more deprived areas very often live close to contaminated sites or in areas where there is a very high flow of traffic. Pollution is also one of the main reasons for the loss of biodiversity. It reduces the ability of ecosystems to provide services such as carbon sequestration and decontamination. \nBut it can be prevented. The EU Action Plan toward a Zero Pollution Ambition is a key action of the European Green Deal scheduled for spring 2021. It will help to create a toxic-free environment across the EU by better monitoring and\, reporting\, and by preventing and remedying pollution from air\, water\, soil\, and consumer products.\nIt will also support the post-COVID 19 recovery by helping to rebuild a more sustainable EU economy\, creating job opportunities and reducing social inequalities. The European Green Week 2021 will be dedicated to the ‘zero pollution ambition’. It will also look at other relevant European Green Deal initiatives\, such the climate initiatives\, the upcoming Chemicals Strategy\, as well as initiatives in the field of energy\, industry\, mobility\, agriculture\, fisheries\, health and biodiversity. \nEU Green Week 2021 will be an opportunity to engage with all stakeholders and interested citizens on how we can work together to make the ambition for a zero pollution and toxic-free environment a reality.

SUMMARY:Global Roundtable on Extractive Industries: Transforming the Sector into an Engine for Sustainable Development
DESCRIPTION:Starting with the industrial revolution\, our global economic system has been underpinned by the extraction of natural resources – notably fossil fuels – which accelerated the development trajectories of many advanced economies. Extractive industries can generate significant revenue for producing countries\, creating major opportunities for growth for resource-rich countries. Yet extractive industries have also been mired by economic\, social and environmental problems. These challenges have been further compounded by COVID-19\, which led to rising debt burdens\, constrained fiscal environments\, and plummeting commodity prices\, which particularly affected both mining\, oil and gas in early 2020. \nOver the past five months\, a series of regional roundtables have taken place in collaboration with Regional Economic Commissions\, with support from UN entities working on extractives including the Climate Action Team\, UNDP\, DESA\, UNCTAD\, and UNEP. The substantive outcomes from these roundtables informed the first-ever policy brief by the UN Secretary-General on extractive industries. \nThe Global Roundtable on 25 Mary will assess the key recommendations outlined in this brief and identify concrete actions and recommendations that can be implemented at the global\, regional\, and national levels. The event will call for concrete solutions on six pressing issues : \n\nIntegrate a circular economy throughout the extractives sector\nSecure a just transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy\, including for coal-dependent economies\, and local communities affected by this change\, including women\, youth\, and indigenous groups\nAlign all forms of public and private finance in the extractives sector with the SDGs and Paris Agreement\, and build on pre-existing efforts to create a sustainable finance taxonomy for extractives\nEnd the local and global environmental damage caused by extractive industries\, including by bolstering transparency and traceability and cleaning global value chains\nEnsure that green technology and widely available data to monitor carbon emissions and air pollution are a global public good\nEnsure that extractive industries provide adequate levels of revenue that allow all countries to invest in their populations and in long-term sustainable development\n\nThe outcomes will also be carried over into future engagements\, including through a new Group of Friends on Extractive Industries\, and translated into action on the ground in a set of pilot countries to be identified which will be supported by the UN Regional Economic Commissions (RECs). \nParticipants \nLed by the United Nations Secretary-General\, the following stakeholders have been invited to participate in the roundtable: \n\nHeads of State and Government\, High-Level Representatives at Ministerial Level\nPartners from the private sector\, civil society and indigenous peoples\, academia\, and think tanks\nThe Executive Secretaries of all five UN Regional Economic Commissions and the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General on Financing the 2030 Agenda.\n\nThe event will be broadcast on UN WEB TV in English only at: http://webtv.un.org/ It can also be viewed via Facebook [@UNwebTV]; Twitter [@UNwebTV]; YouTube [@UNwebTV]
