SUMMARY:The Clean Energy Transition: From Vision to Reality
DESCRIPTION:Decarbonising our economy and avoiding the worst effects of climate change requires us to zero greenhouse gases emissions at the latest by 2050. Energy is a key piece in addressing this challenge as it represents about 75% of anthropogenic emissions. However\, it becomes increasingly evident that the technical challenges associated with the transition\, even if essential\, are one factor of a broader societal transformation. If we are serious about becoming a climate-neutral society\, a comprehensive strategy for a fair and sustainable Clean Energy Transition is needed. \nThis goal will also not be reached without international collaboration and partnership across the globe. Europe has historically been a leader in climate diplomacy and is the first economic bloc to put a concrete roadmap on the table. The undertaking is ambitious; in the words of EU Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni presenting the ‘Fit-for-55’ policy package\, “early movers have advantages\, but they also face risks”. \nThe challenges connected to the Clean Energy Transition are societal in nature and\, consequently\, the potential solutions must be designed in a cross-sectoral and interdisciplinary way. As recently alerted by the UN IPCC\, time is running out to find solutions that will keep average temperatures from increasing too far beyond 1.5°C compared to pre-industrial levels. Never the emergency for driving the Clean Energy Transition effectively and decisively at the EU and global levels has been greater. \nThe EERA White Paper on the Clean Energy Transition\, which will be officially released at the occasion of this conference\, provides EERA’s unique approach to these challenges\, highlighting a set of key policy measures presented as preconditions to successfully and timely drive the Clean Energy Transition and make it a reality for EU citizens.

SUMMARY:Accelerating financing for climate and disaster risk prevention and de-risking investment
DESCRIPTION:The COVID-19 pandemic and climate crisis has demonstrated that governments are critically under-prepared to tackle the systemic nature of risk and are underinvesting in and under-prioritizing prevention and resilience. Investing in disaster risk reduction is a precondition for developing sustainably in a rapidly changing climate. It can be achieved and makes good financial sense. Global investments of €1.6 trillion in appropriate disaster risk reduction strategies could avoid losses of €6.4 trillion (GCA 2019). \nYet\, in certain countries\, domestic public finances earmarked for risk prevention as primary objective are on an average less then 1% of national budget\, suggesting a chronic underinvestment in risk prevention. Current actions are not commensurate with the sheer scale of the challenge – the rapid accumulation of disaster risk that is systemic\, interconnected and cascading. \nDisaster resilience is not prioritized because it is wrongly perceived as politically risky – a cost for an event that might never happen within a political term in most cases driven by lack of visible and well communicated incentives. We are stuck in a vicious circle where the financial cost of disasters is rapidly rising\, strapping governments in their ability to mobilize and provide necessary funds\, trapped in emergency response. \nTo add\, capital market investments are not yet accounting for disaster risk and are in essence\, bankrolling future catastrophes. There is a misperception that disaster risk prevention is the sole responsibility of the public sector and not an issue for the private sector. The true costs of disasters remain external to private sector investment decision-making. At present\, much of the policy\, regulation\, and accounting practices do not mandate consideration or disclosure of the financial impacts of disasters and even though this trend may be slowly changing\, measures are limited primarily to climate risks. \nWe are seeing the consequences of this unfold in real time. \nThe policy space is at a crossroads. The combined effect of COVID-19 and increasing disaster risk from the climate emergency provides today’s decision makers and investors with an unique opportunity to accelerate action and put the world on a path for a resilient\, green and sustainable future. In developing sustainable and climate finance\, it is important to integrate disaster risk reduction to reorient financial flows and financing in support of disaster risk reduction. DESCRIPTION:This year’s International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction is all about governance. You can measure good disaster risk governance in lives saved\, reduced numbers of disaster-affected people and reduced economic losses. COVID-19 and the climate emergency are telling us that we need clear vision\, plans and competent\, empowered institutions acting on scientific evidence for the public good. \nThis requires having national and local strategies for disaster risk reduction in place by the end of the year as agreed by UN Member States when they adopted the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction in 2015. We need to see strategies that address not just single hazards like floods and storms\, but those that respond to systemic risk generated by zoonotic diseases\, climate shocks and environmental breakdown. \nGood national and local strategies for disaster risk reduction must be multi-sectoral\, linking policies in areas such as land use\, building codes\, public health\, education\, agriculture\, environmental protection\, energy\, water resources\, poverty reduction and climate change adaptation.

SUMMARY:EU CCUS Forum
DESCRIPTION:The European Commission is pleased to announce the first high-level forum to engage and facilitate discussions on carbon capture\, utilisation and storage (CCUS). The forum is designed to involve all relevant stakeholders\, representatives of the EU institutions and EU countries to facilitate deployment of CCUS technologies. The launch of the forum will take place in the presence of both Executive Vice president Frans Timmermans and Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson. \nThe European Green Deal identifies the need for a regulatory framework that fosters the development of innovative technologies and infrastructure such as CCUS. Developing the first commercial applications of these technologies could enable EU industries to become climate and resource frontrunners. \nIn addition\, the Energy System Integration Strategy recognises a role for carbon capture\, storage and use in a climate-neutral energy system to support deep decarbonisation\, including synthetic fuels. Combined with renewable hydrogen\, captured CO2 can be used to produce synthetic gases\, fuels and feedstocks while at the same time decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors. \nClosing the gap to climate neutrality by 2050 would require innovative solutions for capturing CO2 and durably storing it in ecosystems\, geological reservoirs or products. Technological solutions such as the combination of bioenergy or direct air captured CO2 with CCUS have the potential to remove several hundred million tonnes of CO2 per year. \nThe first edition of the forum will be held on-line in a virtual format taking into account the uncertainty of travel due to COVID and with the aim to open up for a larger participation.

In addition to the research activities in Mineralogy\, Petrology\, Geochemistry and Geochronology\, and her interest in geological hazards\, she has dedicated particular attention to Geological Heritage\, namely on the conservation\, valorisation and dissemination of the Foz do Douro Metamorphic Complex. She has participated in numerous geoscientific outreach activities\, promoting geoheritage and geology for society.\n\n\nDenise Gorfinkiel is the Regional Responsible for the International Geoscience and Geoparks Programme at the UNESCO Regional Office for Sciences in Latin America and the Caribbean. She started working in UNESCO in 2005 where she accumulated experience in the fields of Natural Sciences\, more specifically in the areas of earth science\, UNESCO Global Geoparks\, renewable energies\, natural disasters\, climate change and green economies. She holds a BA degree in International Relations from the International University of Florida and an MSc in Environmental Economics from the University of the Republic of Uruguay. In the latter\, holding different positions as a professor and researcher\, and working in issues such as environment\, economics\, and climate change\, integrated management for sustainable development\, governance and cooperation.\n\n\nGeologist Helga Chulepin is as mining engineer. She is an expert on sustainable development\, natural resources and community relations. She is a council member of the UNESCO Global Geoparks and the Climate Change\, Risk and Resilience Technical Assessment group of UNESCO Latin America and the Caribbean. She is an Evaluator for the Application and Revalidation Missions of the UNESCO Global Geoparks. As a Geopark expert\, she has participated in several meetings as a speaker and advisor in several countries.\n\n\nCarlos Merizalde Leiton is the Director of International Cooperation and Coordinator of the Interinstitutional Committee for the Management of the Imbabura Geopark. He holds a Master’s Degree in Educational and Social Project Management from Universidad Técnica del Norte. He graduated as Commercial Engineer in the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador\, Ibarra Campus. Since 2015 he has been promoting\, with the Management Committee\, the cause Imbabura UNESCO Global Geopark\, achieving international accreditation in April 2019. Carlos is a member of the Coordination Board of the Geoparks Network of Latin America and the Caribbean – GeoLAC.

SUMMARY:Hydrogen – The energy of the future for heavy industry and transport?
DESCRIPTION:Brussels is placing a lot of hope in hydrogen as a potential fuel to decarbonize heavy transport as well as energy-intensive industry sectors like steel and cement. If hydrogen can be rolled out to power trucks\, trains\, planes and to make steel\, the Commission estimates it would account for between 13 percent and 14 percent of the EU’s final energy demand by 2050. \nBut big questions hang over hydrogen. The first one is if it will be possible to ramp up industrial-scale production of green hydrogen and develop CCS technology to a point where blue hydrogen can be rolled out. And if so\, if there will be a market for clean hydrogen in these hard to abate sectors for what today is a much more expensive energy than the conventional alternatives. The next big issue is where it will be made and how\, and members states have diverging preferences ranging from nuclear reactors to dams to a mix of offshore wind production plus imports from sunny and windy places like North Africa. \nThat’s turning hydrogen in a crucial political\, economic and climate topic for this Commission\, which in July published its dedicated strategy on hydrogen. \n\nWhat’s the outlook for hydrogen to be a clean fuel for heavy transport\, shipping and aviation?\nHow are sectors like steel and cement preparing for a conversion to hydrogen and who are the pioneers in these industries? What are the prospects for hydrogen adoption by other sectors like cars?\nWhat needs to happen for industrial-scale production and demand of green hydrogen?\nWhat is the opportunity for the EU to gain a competitive edge by becoming an early mover in the development of clean hydrogen technology?\nIs there a danger that the EU will substitute its dependence on imported oil and gas for a future reliance on imported hydrogen?\nHow much can Next Generation EU contribute to delivering a clean hydrogen economy in Europe?\nHow long should the transitionary role of blue hydrogen last to achieve the targets?\n\nThe second event of our Energy Visions series gathers key European and national policymakers\, industry\, and NGOs for a frank debate on the role of hydrogen in decarbonizing Europe’s industry and transport\, and how the bloc can create a robust clean hydrogen economy.
