SUMMARY:Deepwater Sandstones: New paradigms\, new frontiers: Energy Group
DESCRIPTION:It has been 30 years since the publication of GSL Special Publication No. 94 ‘Characterisation of Deep Marine Clastic Systems’. At that time the move to explore and develop deepwater reservoirs in present day deepwater settings was beginning to gather pace\, but many significant deepwater discoveries were still to be made. Prevailing paradigms about process and product were changing as workers in the field focused on developing an understanding that a wider range of processes beyond classical turbidity currents were responsible for depositing and shaping deepwater sandstone deposits. \n\n\nThirty years later depositional models and process understanding has evolved significantly\, leading to the successful deployment of concepts that have driven exploration to integrate new ideas including the role of mass-transport complexes and a wider range of particulate sediment gravity flow processes. A much deeper understanding of post-depositional remobilisation and it’s role in shaping subsurface architectures and influencing fluid flow and petroleum recovery has also emerged. Vast deep-water discoveries have been developed and now accumulated significant production history\, providing a wealth of data sets that have dramatically improved characterisation of deep-water systems. Tertiary reservoirs have been extensively developed\, and today the focus has shifted decisively to older Cretaceous systems around the circum Southern Atlantic margins. Continued advances in geophysical technology\, seismic data acquisition and processing\, including ‘AI/ML’ driven interpretation tools\, have contributed to our ability to visualise\, map and characterise these systems in the subsurface. \n\n\nThirty years on from this key Society publication new paradigms and frontiers are being explored in the field. This symposium aims to showcase developments\, insights and case studies from the last three decades and bring together geoscientists and practitioners working on deepwater sandstones from across academia\, industry and government organisations. \nCall for abstracts now open\nThe call for abstracts for this conference is now open until Monday 29 June 2026. \nFor further information\, please contact: energygroup@geolsoc.org.uk

SUMMARY:IAEG 2026 Course #4:4D Engineering Geology & the Limits of Conventional Design Analysis
DESCRIPTION:This course\, endorsed by the European Federation of Geologists (EFG)\, will be organised as part of the 2026 Congress of the International Association for Engineering Geology and the Environment (IAEG 2026). The IAEG 2026 will take place in Delft (The Netherlands) from 30 October to 6 November 2026. \nThe listed IAEG workshops on the EFG calendar are scheduled\, but additional workshops may be added and/or the existing ones may be slightly modified. \nIAEG 2026 Course #4: 4D Engineering Geology & the Limits of Conventional Design Analysis\nWHEN: \nSaturday 31 October or Sunday 1 November 2026 (Day To Be Confirmed). \nFull day – 9:00 to 16:00. \nINSTRUCTOR: \n\nDr Chrysothemis Paraskevopoulou\, Associate Professor in Tunnelling and Rock Engineering\, School of Earth and Environment\, University of Leeds\, Great Britain\, www.chrysothemis.me\n\nCO-INSTRUCTOR: \n\nProf Mark Diederichs\, Professor Emeritus in Geological Engineering\, Queen’s University\, Kingston\, Ontario\, Canada.\n\nOVERVIEW: \nEngineering geologists and geological engineers are tasked with capturing the complexity of the subsurface—within and beyond the immediate project footprint. Whether it is for a tunnel\, quarry\, cavern\, slope\, or repository\, the challenge remains the same: building a geological model that accurately reflects reality\, both in three dimensions and over time. This fourth dimension—time—is critical. It underpins geological events and processes\, allowing us to better understand structural evolution\, fault types\, jointing\, weathering\, alteration\, and rock fabric development. \nBut how often do our models\, and the tools we use\, really reflect this complexity? \nOver the last half-century\, engineering practice has often reduced geological richness to simplified inputs—rock mass classifications\, homogenized domains\, and analytical solutions assuming uniform\, isotropic conditions. While these tools are convenient\, they can obscure or misrepresent the true behavior of the rock mass – especially when it is discrete\, inhomogeneous\, anisotropic\, or evolving. \nThis workshop is designed to bring geology and engineering back into alignment. We will begin with a concise review of the principles of 4D geological modeling\, including how to handle uncertainty (both parametric and discrete) in real-world projects. We will then explore the limitations of common engineering analysis approaches—including classification-based inputs\, overly simplified tunnel profiles\, and assumptions of material uniformity—when applied to complex geological conditions. Through a series of case studies\, live demonstrations\, and hands-on modeling exercises\, you will engage directly with the consequences of oversimplification. \nTARGET AUDIENCE: \nEngineering geologists\, geological engineers\, civil engineers\, and geotechnical professionals. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES: \nThe workshop participants will see how different interpretations of geology can profoundly influence design decisions—and how industry-standard software can (and can’t) capture this. \nEXPECTED OUTCOMES: \nAfter completing the workshop\, participants will better integrate geological insight into engineering practice—and challenge the assumptions that often go unquestioned in conventional design. \nTEACHING STYLE: \nThis workshop will comprise a combination of: \n\nLectures and case studies: foundations of geological modeling and where engineering analysis falls short\nLive demonstrations: real-time analysis of how geological complexity impacts model outputs\, with open Q&A\, interactive discussions\, and hands-on exercises using real-world examples\nHands-On exercises\nUse of industry-standard software to model geological impact on design outcomes.\n\nCOURSE AND MATERIAL PROVIDED: \nLecture notes and short handouts for hands-on exercises \nEQUIPMENT REQUIRED: \nParticipants must bring their own PC laptops (Windows only\, NOT Mac) \nSoftware Provided: 30-day licenses for RS2\, UNWEDGE\, and SLIDE (via Rocscience) \nLicenses will be sent 10 days before the course\, along with installation instructions and a custom tutorial guide. \nREGISTRATION DETAILS: \nRegistration required. \nFee: 200 euros\, including catering (coffee breaks and lunch). \n20% discount for EurGeol title holders. \nNUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: \n25 – 35.

SUMMARY:IAEG 2026 Course #2: Tales from the Swamp
DESCRIPTION:This course\, endorsed by the European Federation of Geologists (EFG)\, will be organised as part of the 2026 Congress of the International Association for Engineering Geology and the Environment (IAEG 2026). The IAEG 2026 will take place in Delft (The Netherlands) from 30 October to 6 November 2026. \nThe listed IAEG workshops on the EFG calendar are scheduled\, but additional workshops may be added and/or the existing ones may be slightly modified. \nIAEG 2026 Course #2: Tales from the Swamp\nWHEN: \nSaturday 31 October or Sunday 1 November 2026 (Day To Be Confirmed). \nFull day – 9:00 to 16:00. \nINSTRUCTORS: \n\nArjan Venmans is an engineering geologist specializing in the design\, construction\, and maintenance of roads and railways on soft soil. His activities include developing and validating design methods for soil improvement\, field testing of innovative construction methods and aging infrastructure\, using waste as a building material\, consultancy and construction supervision. As a visiting scholar\, he lectures on organic soils at the Geoengineering section of Delft University of Technology.\nSanneke van Asselen is a physical geographer with a keen interest in topics related to land subsidence in soft-soil organic sequences\, delta structure and evolution\, and (fluvial) geomorphology. Recent research focuses on quantifying and monitoring land subsidence due to peat compaction and oxidation in Holocene delta sequences. Her PhD research investigated how peat compaction influences delta development and fluvial morphology.\nCor Zwanenburg is an expert in soft soil engineering. His focus is on soft soil problems associated with slopes and landfills\, such as stability\, settlement\, consolidation\, and creep. Areas of special interest are the assessment of parameters through laboratory tests or field measurements\, and their relationship to calculation techniques. Between 2001 and 2005\, he obtained his doctorate from Delft University of Technology with a dissertation on the consolidation behaviour of peat.\n\nOVERVIEW: \nPeat and organic soils are present in the shallow subsurface of many deltas in the world. \nHigh compressibility\, low strength and susceptibility to oxidation pose challenges to infrastructure and housing. If these challenges are not properly understood and addressed the cost to society can be huge. Peat and organic soils are not “textbook” soils in terms of their behaviour and reaction to natural and man-induced changes. The heterogeneity of the deposits poses challenges to site characterisation methods\, requiring specific techniques. This workshop will familiarise the participants with characterisation\, behaviour and challenges of peat and organic soils\, adopting a lessons-learned approach from the Netherlands. \nTARGET AUDIENCE: \nStudents\, researchers\, geologists\, engineering geologists\, geotechnical engineers. SUMMARY:H-NAT Summit 2026
DESCRIPTION:The European Federation of Geologists (EFG) is pleased to support the H-NAT 2026 World Summit as a Media Partner. The summit will bring together experts\, policymakers\, industry leaders\, researchers\, and innovators to explore the latest developments in natural hydrogen technologies and the transition towards a low-carbon energy future. \nThe global energy transition has reached a definitive turning point. Natural hydrogen is no longer a geological curiosity; it is now a strategic industrial reality. Following the resounding success of our 2025 edition—which gathered over 500 leaders from 40+ nationalities—H-Nat Summit 2026 returns to Paris as the undisputed epicenter of this emerging industry.\n\nThe “if” has been answered. The “where” is being mapped across five continents. Now\, the industry is focused on the “How”: How do we produce at scale? How do we regulate? And how do we deliver this carbon-free resource to the final customer?\n\nWhile HNAT Summit remains the world’s leading platform for Exploration and Subsurface Tools\, this year’s summit will reflect the industry’s maturation. We are expanding our scope to cover the entire value chain\, from the first seismic survey to the final offtake agreement.\n\nExploration & Tech Excellence: H-NAT continues to showcase the latest advancements in airborne geophysics\, advanced sensors\, and basin modeling software that are de-risking the subsurface.\nStimulated H2: For the first time\, a dedicated focus will be placed on the in situ generation of H2\, how to select the rock\, which fluid to inject\, how to produce\nProduction and subsurface H2 storage: How to manage an H2 reservoir? Can we image the gas/fluid interface? Are technologies of enhanced fluid recovery necessary?\nUpstream: critical issues of separation and transport\, best use of natural H2 depending of its purity?\nRegulatory & Country Initiatives: As nations from France to Australia and Colombia update their mining codes\, the “National Regulations & Countries Program” becomes the vital hub for understanding national strategies and securing the “license to operate.”\nThe Capital Bridge: Building on the success of the H-NAT Investor Day\, the organisers are scaling their financial forums. H-NAT 2026 will connect project developers with the private equity and infrastructure funds ready to bridge the gap between discovery and commercialisation\n\nEFG will be represented by Dr Nikolaos Koukouzas\, Coordinator of the EFG Panel of Experts on CCS & Hydrogen Geological Storage\, who will present a poster on behalf of the Federation. \nAs a Media Partner\, EFG members can benefit from a discounted registration fee.
