SUMMARY:Towards a revised Neogene stratigraphy of Belgium
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday 19 May 2022\, the Subcommission for Paleogene and Neogene Stratigraphy organises a symposium ‘Towards a revised Neogene stratigraphy of Belgium’. An excursion is planned for 20 May. The venue of the symposium is the RBINS in Brussels and attendance is free of charge. \nIt is an event for geologists\, palaeontologists\, citizen scientists and professionals with an interest in Neogene stratigraphy. The results of the stratigraphical review will be presented by members of the subcommission\, including the cross-border correlation and integration. Keynote speakers from TNO (the Netherlands) and from GD-NRW (Krefeld\, Germany) will share the state of the art of knowledge of the Neogene deposits in their region. \nBy the end of February the detailed program and the online subscription will be available on the website of the National Commission for Stratigraphy of Belgium.

SUMMARY:2022 Forum on Responsible Mineral Supply Chains
DESCRIPTION:The 15th Forum on Responsible Mineral Supply Chains will be held virtually on 2-6 May 2022 and will bring together representatives from government\, business\, and civil society. Plenary sessions will take place at 11h30-12h45 and 13h30-14.45 CET\, while partner-led sessions will take place in the mornings and afternoons. \nThe Forum will provide the opportunity to review and discuss the implementation of the OECD Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Supply Chains of Minerals from Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas and other initiatives to enable responsible mineral production and sourcing. This year\, the Forum will devote particular attention to critical minerals and the role of supply chain due diligence in enabling critical minerals to contribute to a just low-carbon transition. The Forum will also feature sessions on market access for artisanal and small-scale mining and the coherence of due diligence systems. Other sessions will feature technical discussions on using monitoring and evaluation to identify key systemic blockages to due diligence\, using supply chain due diligence to address emerging risks\, and those with growing awareness like environmental impacts in mining\, and identifying conflict-affected and high-risk areas.

SUMMARY:European Geothermal PhD Days (EGPD)
DESCRIPTION:Europe is transitioning towards cleaner energy resources to establish a sustainable\, reliable\, and affordable energy system. Geothermal is critical for this transition since it provides a flexible baseload renewable source of energy. The challenges of sustainable geothermal operations require an interdisciplinary approach. Combining geoscientific and engineering solutions is essential for innovation at operational sites. Therefore\, it is necessary to train the next generation of geothermal experts in order to develop and exploit the geothermal projects of tomorrow. \n\nThe European Geothermal PhD Days (EGPD) is a two-day training program organised by PhD students of different universities every year. The first European Geothermal PhD-day (EGPD2010) was held at the Helmholtz Centre Potsdam GFZ – German Research Centre for Geosciences – on February 12\, 2010\, as an initiative of the European Energy Research Alliance (EERA) joint program in geothermal energy. After 13 versions of the EGPD\, more than 180 PhD students working on geothermal energy have participated. In total\, participants working in 20 different European countries\, and various scientific disciplines\, have attended the two-day PhD-training program. \nEGPD is a way to efficiently spread scientific knowledge related to geothermal energy by making an event that attracts young specialists. It emulates youth in geosciences and provides a framework to make connections in a qualitative way. It provides a dedicated and informal occasion for the PhD students to exchange with their pair and to develop their network.

SUMMARY:CCUS Technologies in Industrial Systems
DESCRIPTION:An international online workshop organized jointly by the IETS (Industrial Energy-Related Technologies and Systems) and IEAGHG (IEA Greenhouse Gas R&D Programme)\, which are both Technology Collaboration Programmes (TCPs) under the International Energy Agency (IEA). \nCCUS technologies and systems are among the most important measures for achieving reduction of GHG emissions in industry. Due to the need for deep decarbonization\, a mix of novel and traditional technologies can be foreseen in many plants\, in addition to CCUS e. g. electrification\, biorefineries\, hydrogen usage\, digitalization and industrial symbiosis. Improving the knowledge of design\, integration and role of CCUS in the process industry from a systems perspective will therefore be of high importance for the introduction of these technologies in the industry sector. \nKnowledge transfer from the planning\, implementation as well as the operational phases is important. This area is of high interest for both IEA TCPs organizing this workshop.

DESCRIPTION:EU Industry Days is Europe’s flagship annual event\, highlighting industrial frontrunners and ongoing industrial policy discussions whilst improving the knowledge base of European industry. \nIt is the main platform to discuss industry challenges and co-develop opportunities and policy responses in an inclusive dialogue with a wide range of stakeholders. \nThe 2022 edition will take place in hybrid format in Brussels between 8 – 11 February 2022\, and it will stimulate discussions across industrial ecosystems on their green and digital transition\, in support of strengthening the resilience of EU companies (including SMEs). \nIt will also hold discussions on how the young generation can shape the future of EU industry\, in line with the Commission proposal to make 2022 the European Year of Youth. SUMMARY:Critical raw materials: an essential building block for the future of Europe
DESCRIPTION:The EESC has carried out extensive work in the past years on topics linked to mining and raw materials. With the publication in September 2020 of the Commission’s Action Plan on Critical Raw Materials\, and building on the past experience\, the EESC has been carrying out activity on this issue that included its opinion CCMI 177\, several follow up meetings (including cooperation in the framework of the European Parliament’s own initiative report on the subject)\, a webinar\, several press and public publications and the participation of the EESC in the European Raw Materials Alliance as observer. \nIn addition\, the issue of critical raw materials is topical and gaining momentum. The European Parliament has adopted its report on this topic on 23 November 2021. The Updated industrial strategy as well as the Commission’s 2021 Strategic Foresight Report both put a strong spotlight on the importance of critical raw materials to achieve strategic autonomy for EU industry and society. Also\, the European Raw Materials Alliance will be launching new clusters of activity in 2022. In short\, there is high need for the public discourse to continue and for civil society to continue its involvement on the subject. \nBuilding on previous activity\, this conference will specifically zoom in on two aspects: 1) Securing EU’s open strategic autonomy: the role of critical raw materials in EU industry’s green and digital transition calls for solutions to secure supply and ensure resilience 2) The importance of circularity and of creating a market for secondary raw materials in Europe to secure EU’s resilience.

SUMMARY:Energy Transition Expertise Centre Stakeholder Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The first Energy transition expertise centre (EnTEC) stakeholder workshop is organised jointly by the European Commission and the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI. It aims to inform stakeholders about the EnTEC project and present the first 2 in-depth studies: \n\nEnabling the Energy Transition – How flexible digital options can support\nThe role of renewable H2 import & storage to scale up the EU deployment of H2\n\nFraunhofer ISI will introduce the project. The EnTEC partners McKinsey and Trinomics will present the studies. Afterwards there will be the opportunity to discuss the study results and ask questions to the project team. \nBackground \nThe Energy transition expertise centre (EnTEC) is a (virtual) multi-disciplinary centre of expertise for the energy transition\, aiming to identify relevant future topics for the energy transition. \nEnTEC has been set-up to reply to the challenges of the clean energy transition and to meet the ambitious targets of the European Green Deal. Its main objective is to monitor and analyse trends in technologies and innovations that are relevant for the energy transition\, in the energy sector\, but also in other relevant sectors\, in particular transport and mobility\, industry\, the digital sector and cities\, homes and buildings. Its work is also related to the overall aim of creating a (more) sustainable society. Furthermore\, the EnTEC experts analyse impacts of technologies and innovations on the energy transition\, provide recommendations for policy responses that guide the energy transition and its impact on – and interaction with – other sectors and with other policy areas. \nTo achieve this\, EnTEC elaborates and applies a systematic framework for monitoring and identification of relevant topics\, of which 3-4 are selected on an annual basis and defined for an explorative or in-depth analysis. The explorative/in-depth projects are framed and conducted by the Innovation Research Team (IRES) of the EnTEC and external experts.
