SUMMARY:European Shallow Geothermal Energy Days
DESCRIPTION:Heat represents more than half of Europe’s energy needs and the vast majority of it comes from fossil fuels. Shallow geothermal energy can be the key to decarbonise heating and cooling\, being a clean and mature technology that could be installed anywhere in Europe. Yet\, it is widely considered as a niche technology\, even if in a few countries such as Sweden and Finland\, is becoming mainstream and 2 million geothermal heat pumps have already been installed. \nThe 3rd edition of the “European Shallow Geothermal Energy Days” will take place on 7th and 9th December 2021 and will connect policy makers\, scientists\, and professionals to discuss ways to boost the market uptake of geothermal heat pumps and underground thermal energy storage. \nThis 2021 event is organised by the European Geothermal Energy Council (EGEC)\, the Renewable Heating and Cooling Platform (RHC-ETIP)\, GEOTRAINET aisbl and Geothermal DHC COST action\, with the support of the GeoERA-MUSE project\, EuroGeoSurveys.

SUMMARY:ISARM 2021 - 2nd International Conference on Transboundary Aquifers
DESCRIPTION:Overview of the challenges and way forward into addressing transboundary aquifers management\nGroundwater is the most abundant source of freshwater worldwide. This makes it crucial to socio-ecological systems and the source of at least half of the planet population[1]. There are 366 transboundary aquifers identified\, and 226 transboundary “groundwater bodies”[2]\, underlying almost every country. \nTransboundary aquifers are not only a source of freshwater to societies\, but they also represent a geographic\, economic\, and geopolitical space. While nations establish their limits by political boundaries\, aquifers are delimited by their hydrogeological dynamics; understanding them and defining the boundaries of these water bodies is a challenge due to the intricate physicochemical processes to which they are exposed and the available information and characterization. Furthermore\, transboundary aquifers are a complex subject to apprehend due to the sociopolitical and territorial interactions that stir up in them. \nThere is no doubt transboundary aquifers management is a challenge\, particularly when addressing governance issues. Furthermore\, under the light of the Agenda 2030 and the new development framework\, there is clear evidence that institutional strengthening on transboundary aquifers management\, and the so mentioned subjects\, is needed. Besides\, there is an absence of characterization and legal guidance on this subject with existing multilateral environmental\, regional\, and sub-regional agreements (i.e. Paris Agreement\, UN biodiversity convention\, the RAMSAR Conventions)\, and existing transboundary river basin treaties and agreements. \nThe Second International UNESCO Conference on transboundary aquifers ISARM II “Challenges and the way forward”; aims to be an opportunity for showcasing diverse efforts made by UNESCO\, the International and Donor community (GEF\, the World Bank\, the FAO\, the Swiss\, the German etc…) to streamline groundwater as an enabler for achieving the water-related SDGs.

SUMMARY:POLITICO Sustainable Future Summit
DESCRIPTION:The EU is betting on its ability to become greener and more sustainable. To slash its emissions by at least 55% over the next ten years\, the bloc is making full use of its Green Deal toolbox. From the Fit for 55 package to the taxonomy definition and the CO2 border tax proposal\, the old continent is pushing its way through\, targeting all sectors. But will this be enough for Europe to be a global leader in sustainability? \nNot only must Europe keep its environmental footprint in check\, it also has to support companies and citizens economically as they emerge from the pandemic. Meanwhile\, the EU is also pushing for a digital transition\, which comes with its share of opportunities and setbacks in mitigating climate change. \n\n\nPOLITICO Live is bringing back the Sustainable Future Summit for a third edition on November 30-December 1 in Brussels and online. Taking place right after COP26 and just six months after the release of the EU Fit for 55 package\, this event represents a unique opportunity to assess the contribution that each sector can bring to the table to meet the new target emissions reduction.

SUMMARY:PFAS: Challenges and solutions
DESCRIPTION:Under the European Green Deal\, the European Commission adopted the Zero Pollution Action Plan in May 2021 and the Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability in October 2020. The strategies identify air\, water and soil pollution as a threat for the environment\, biodiversity and human health. \nPFAS is a group of persistent chemicals\, commonly known as ‘forever chemicals’. Some of them bio-accumulate\, are toxic and mobile. Diffuse and point-sources of PFAS pollution affect the environment including water resources. Once in the aquatic environmental\, these substances are extremely difficult to remove while natural degradation can take many decades. \nThe new Drinking Water Directive sets stringent threshold values for PFAS\, in order to protect human health. Due to multiple pathways\, this will however not avoid human exposure to PFAS or their accumulation in the environment. With this in mind\, the Chemical Strategy for Sustainability established an action plan for PFAS\, including a ban of all non-essential PFAS uses\, taking into account the Zero Pollution ambition. \nIn the meantime\, many PFAS-related legislative and non-legislative developments are taking place in the EU as well as worldwide. In order to explore the various initiatives and the way these may contribute to realizing the goals of the European Green Deal\, the Working Group on ‘Water Management’ of the European Parliament Intergroup on ‘Climate Change\, Biodiversity and Sustainable Development’ organizes an online meeting\, bringing together EU decision-makers\, regulators\, the business community\, and civil society.

SUMMARY:2021 EU Conference on modelling for policy support: collaborating across disciplines to tackle key policy challenges
DESCRIPTION:Tackling policy challenges requires making political choices\, which must be transparently informed by evidence. \nModels are extensively used to analyse the environmental\, economic\, and social impacts of policies. The European Commission makes use of models throughout the policy cycle and is committed to sound and transparent use of evidence in the framework of the Better Regulation policy and Open science principles. \nThe Conference brings together researchers and policymakers from European and international institutions\, Member States\, universities\, research institutes and consultancies to identify common challenges and solutions when using models to support policymaking across all policy domains. \nThe Conference is fully online and free of charge. Selected sessions are recorded and web streamed. Please note that for workshops and trainings there is a limited number of participants (see further below).

SUMMARY:5th DRMKC annual Seminar
DESCRIPTION:The world is facing significant social\, economic and environmental challenges exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic which brought profound implications to our societies and the way we organize ourselves to protect people\, property and economic interests. The early warning of this era of disasters is arriving almost daily in news reports from across the globe of record-breaking heatwaves\, prolonged droughts\, forest fires\, flooding\, sea-level rise and record-setting storms. The succession of record-breaking disasters that have swept the globe during this summer of 2021 are challenging our understanding of extreme events. There have been serious floods in China and Western Europe\, heatwaves and drought in North America and wildfires in the sub-Arctic and in multiple other countries around the globe. Managing disasters amid the COVID-19 pandemic is an emerging challenge calling for the establishment of strong alliances\, in particular between scientists\, practitioners and decision makers to reinforce our capacities to better protect our future. \nAs recently evidenced in the 2021 IPCC report\, under the current landscape scenario\, where intensification of the effects of natural and technological hazards due to climate change is combined with new ways of threatening our societies\, the role of science\, technology and innovations is crucial and needs to be further exploited in a more systematic manner at all stages of the disaster risk management cycle. \nWithin the Union Civil Protection Mechanism(UCPM)\, the pivotal role of science is acknowledged in Article 3(e) of Decision No 1313 / 2013 / EU which calls for an increase in “the availability and use of scientific knowledge on disasters”. The role of scientific knowledge is further emphasized through Article 13 establishing the Union Civil Protection Knowledge Network. \nWithin the newly established Knowledge Network\, its Science Pillar is proposed to become the collaborative space where the scientific community connects to the operational stakeholders while ensuring that decision-makers benefit from already – existing scientific knowledge and that the scientists benefit from decision – makers’ experience to further develop innovative and tailored technologies. The Disaster Risk Management Knowledge Centre will become the nucleus of the Knowledge Network’s Science Pillar. \nThe Fifth annual seminar of the DRMKC takes places in this changing landscape\, which implies strengthening its role as a leader of the scientific dialogue for an enhanced civil protection legislation. \nThe annual seminar will be an opportunity to launch a new phase of dialogue between civil protection authorities and the scientific community and to start building the network together. The scope would be to establish the core community of scientists who will help constructing the knowledge base for supporting DRM activities and actions. \nThe activities in a first phase will be shaped around the development of multidisciplinary and cross – cutting knowledge\, scientific guidance and new technologies for building resilience towards complex transboundary disasters. The seminar will hence address specific activities that can make significant impact in terms of role and mission of the Science Pillar: \n\nMaking available and better quality risk and loss data\, improving risk assessment methodology\, better understanding of risk driver and harmonization of risk metrics;\nProvide scientific advice in implementing the Union Disaster Resilience Goals\, measuring and monitoring them;\nAdvising on strategies and policies to counter disastrous situations through the development of resilience scenarios that factor in multiple hazards and cascading effects for improved early warning systems.
