SUMMARY:Nordic Geological Winter Meeting 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Nordic Geological Winter Meeting (NGWM) brings together researchers from Denmark\, Finland\, Iceland\, Norway\, and Sweden\, representing all disciplines within the geosciences. Since its inception in 1954\, the NGWM has become a biennial tradition in the Nordic geoscience community. It provides a platform for Earth scientists across the region to connect\, share their latest research\, and foster collaboration. \nThe meeting will feature three days of scientific sessions\, including oral and poster presentations\, as well as an exhibition showcasing a wide range of relevant content for participants. The theme for this year’s meeting is “World in Transition”\, emphasizing the interdisciplinary and forward-thinking nature of the geosciences. While contributions addressing this theme are particularly encouraged\, submissions from all areas of geoscience are warmly welcome. We invite geologists from academia\, industry\, consulting\, and students to join us in this event. \nThe European Federation of Geologists (EFG)  will be represented at a booth through Geosektionen (EFG National Association from Sweden) and LOIMU (EFG National Association from Finland). Please note that participation in the Ice-Breaker is not included with registration for the CRM-Geothermal Final Conference. \nThis final project conference will showcase the main findings of the EU-funded CRM-geothermal project\, with presentations by consortium partners and invited experts. The programme is structured into three thematic sessions: \n\nSession 1: Content\, origin\, and mobility of Critical Raw Materials (CRM) in geothermal fluids across different geological settings\nSession 2: Extraction methods for CRM from geothermal fluids\nSession 3: Economic\, social\, and governance aspects of CRM co-production\n\n\nAbout the CRM-geothermal Project\nThe CRM-geothermal project applies a holistic approach to evaluating and extracting Critical Raw Materials (CRM) from geothermal fluids in Europe and East Africa. Its work bridges geoscience\, technology\, and sustainability to strengthen Europe’s raw materials independence. \nKey project achievements include: \n-1. Assessment of CRM potential: A comprehensive database and a Fluid Atlas were developed to visualise the distribution of critical raw materials in geothermal fluids. \n-2. Understanding geological processes: The origin and mobilisation of CRMs were studied across diverse geological settings – such as crystalline fractured rocks and deep sedimentary basins with high-salinity fluids – to assess their occurrence and long-term extraction potential. \n-3. Innovative extraction technologies: New methods were developed for extracting CRMs such as lithium\, strontium\, and helium from different types of geothermal fluids. \n-4. Socio-economic and environmental assessment: The project evaluated economic\, social\, and environmental dimensions of CRM co-production. \n-5. DESCRIPTION:The European Federation of Geologists (EFG) and GeoTHERM 2026 have signed a partnership agreement to strengthen the connection between the professional geological community and the geothermal energy sector. \nGeoTHERM is the largest trade fair and congress for geothermal energy in Europe. Taking place at the Offenburg Exhibition Centre in Germany on 26 and 27 February 2026\, the event brings together international experts\, companies\, and decision-makers from the fields of shallow and deep geothermal energy. It serves as a unique platform for exchange\, knowledge transfer\, and innovation in the transition to renewable energies. \nThe new partnership establishes a framework for mutual support and active participation during the upcoming event. SUMMARY:What Makes a Geoscience Model Useful?
DESCRIPTION:Modelling is ubiquitous in geoscience\, from conceptual models used to summarise qualitative outcrop interpretations\, to experimental analogue models and complex numerical process models used to advance our understanding fundamental processes. Geoscience models of all types are widely used for prediction across all areas of geoscience\, for example in natural hazard prediction\, in subsurface prediction in the exploration\, appraisal and production of natural resources\, and increasingly in sequestration and energy storage.  In all cases\, the question applies: what makes a geoscience model useful? Answering this question is important because it requires that we fully understand and optimise the modelling process to best develop and encapsulate robust understanding and therefore make the best possible predictions. \nAims of Meeting \nThe meeting aims to use oral\, poster and keynote presentations combined with discussion and debate sessions to progress answers to the following questions: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat makes a geoscience model useful?\nHow should conceptual\, analogue and numerical models be used and integrated in geoscience?\nHow much do conceptual models inform\, influence or limit data collection and interpretation?\nDo digital outcrop models have significant untapped potential\, for example to improve existing conceptual models?\nWhat does it mean for a model to be predictive?\nHow do you find the simplest model or models able to answer the question being asked?\nAre simple process models as useful as complex process models?\nDo we need metrics for model complexity?\nWhat new process models remain to be developed\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPotential outputs of the conference include a white paper on best practice in geoscience modelling. This could perhaps form an excellent starting point for a GSL Special Publication presenting papers building on the themes presented during the conference \nWho is this conference aimed at? \nThis conference will be useful to any geoscientist who uses models\, from conceptual and digital outcrop models\, to models that integrate multiple forms of data\, to full-physics analogue and numerical process models. It will be useful if you want to better understand where the boundary between models and data lies\, how best to develop and/or apply models for robust prediction\, and how further development of models can advance geoscience. DESCRIPTION:The European Federation of Geologists is proud to serve as a media partner of the World Conference on Carbon Capture\, Utilisation\, and Storage (WCCUS 2026)\, taking place in Edinburgh\, UK\, from 21–25 September 2026. \nCarbon capture\, utilisation\, and storage (CCUS) play a central role in achieving climate neutrality and accelerating the transition to a low-carbon economy. WCCUS 2026 will bring together researchers\, industry professionals\, and policymakers to address scientific\, technological\, and policy challenges across the CCUS value chain. \nThe conference organisers are currently inviting abstract submissions. SUMMARY:Deepwater Sandstones: New paradigms\, new frontiers: Energy Group
DESCRIPTION:It has been 30 years since the publication of GSL Special Publication No. 94 ‘Characterisation of Deep Marine Clastic Systems’. At that time the move to explore and develop deepwater reservoirs in present day deepwater settings was beginning to gather pace\, but many significant deepwater discoveries were still to be made. Prevailing paradigms about process and product were changing as workers in the field focused on developing an understanding that a wider range of processes beyond classical turbidity currents were responsible for depositing and shaping deepwater sandstone deposits. \n\n\nThirty years later depositional models and process understanding has evolved significantly\, leading to the successful deployment of concepts that have driven exploration to integrate new ideas including the role of mass-transport complexes and a wider range of particulate sediment gravity flow processes. A much deeper understanding of post-depositional remobilisation and it’s role in shaping subsurface architectures and influencing fluid flow and petroleum recovery has also emerged. Vast deep-water discoveries have been developed and now accumulated significant production history\, providing a wealth of data sets that have dramatically improved characterisation of deep-water systems. Tertiary reservoirs have been extensively developed\, and today the focus has shifted decisively to older Cretaceous systems around the circum Southern Atlantic margins. Continued advances in geophysical technology\, seismic data acquisition and processing\, including ‘AI/ML’ driven interpretation tools\, have contributed to our ability to visualise\, map and characterise these systems in the subsurface. \n\n\nThirty years on from this key Society publication new paradigms and frontiers are being explored in the field. This symposium aims to showcase developments\, insights and case studies from the last three decades and bring together geoscientists and practitioners working on deepwater sandstones from across academia\, industry and government organisations. \nCall for abstracts now open\nThe call for abstracts for this conference is now open until Monday 29 June 2026. \nFor further information\, please contact: energygroup@geolsoc.org.uk

DESCRIPTION:This course\, endorsed by the European Federation of Geologists (EFG)\, will be organised as part of the 2026 Congress of the International Association for Engineering Geology and the Environment (IAEG 2026). This workshop will provide an overview of the IAEG Guidelines\, followed by a practical opportunity to implement the knowledge gained. During the workshop\, participants will work in small\, supervised groups to develop EGM’s on real life exercises involving typical infrastructure developments in challenging geological environments. \nTARGET AUDIENCE: \nThe workshop is intended for a broad range of ground engineering professionals\, ranging from junior and intermediate level engineering geologists and geotechnical engineers and who prepare engineering geological models for projects\, to senior staff who ensure the quality of the engineering geological models that are delivered. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES: \nThe workshop participants will be provided with an introduction to the IAEG Guidelines and how they should be applied.
