SUMMARY:Salt Diapirism and Sediment Interactions in Portugal Lusitanian & Algarve Basins
DESCRIPTION:This is a course endorsed by EFG \nContent of the course: \nThis 5-day field trip focuses on the main aspects of salt tectonics\, particularly on diapirs and their interplay with sedimentary processes. Participants will observe structural and sedimentary features that are usually not detectable on seismic data. \nThe onshore Algarve and Lusitanian basins located on the Atlantic West Iberian Margin present world-class exposures that are ideal to visualize common aspects and problems that professionals deal with during exploration\, appraisal\, and development phases of hydrocarbon accumulations and for underground energy storage (natural gas\, hydrogen\, compressed air\, battery systems\, etc…)\, CCUS\, geothermal energy and toxic /nuclear waste storage. \nThe geological structures in the two basins improve our understanding of the origin and complexity of evaporitic sequences and related halokinetic processes\, limitations with imaging and interpreting internal and external structure of salt diapirs. Participants will observe the implications of salt tectonics for reservoir properties and trapping mechanisms on upturned salt diapir flanks\, thermal gradient variation and intra-salt heterogeneity. \nThe highlights of the trip are: \n\nAn unique chance to see outcrops with an oil field trapped against a salt diapir;\nVisit a salt mine inside a squeezed diapir beneath the centre of Loulé City in Algarve;\nExplore the deepest evaporite quarry in Portugal\, which was originally a mine;\n\nMultiple exceptional outcrops of salt-related structures in Central and southern Portugal. \nObjectives of the course: \nUnderstanding the following geological aspects: \n– Timing of diapirism and its relation with tectonic events;\n-Salt diapirism and interaction with sediments: differences and similarities between carbonate and clastic overburden interactions;\n-Internal structure of diapirs (layered evaporites\, volcanic intrusions\, interbedded carbonate and clastic sediments\, folding\, boudinage\, faulting and shear zone development in evaporites);\n– Fault and salt welds and fluid flow along weld;\n– Unconformities: J-hook\, flap-onlap\, low-angle wedge;\n– Cap rock formation and dissolution breccias around salt structures;\n– Hydrocarbon trap geometries against salt diapirs;\n– Structural inheritance and onset of halokinesis;\n– Salt-sediment interface controlling fluid flow;\n– Fluid flow through salt;\n– Reworked breccias from diapiric material and roof sediments;\n– Roof collapse and sedimentary infill above diapirs;\n– Reservoir damage around salt diapirs;\n– Implications of field work observations for seismic imaging of salt diapirs and seismic interpretation of salt structures. \nCosts of the course: \nFull Cost: 3000 euros (+VAT if applicable)\nAPG members: 2700 euros (+VAT if applicable) (%10 discount rate)\nEurGeol title holders: 2400 euros (+VAT if applicable) (%20 discount rate)\nGroup discount (>5 participants) (%15 discount rate) \nYou can find more information and get registered in the following link: https://www.geologica.xyz/salt-tig-geo-logica-field-trip-i2

SUMMARY:1er Forum des Géosciences pour la Société
DESCRIPTION:“To answer to the necessary energy transition\, the geosciences\, from academic and entrepreneurial circles\, occupy a central position thanks to their very wide range of disciplines (geothermy\, mineral resources\, hydrogeology\, natural hazards…). \nMany of them are working on this transition and are proposing the beginnings of responses to these challenges\, whether through advances in knowledge or technological innovations. However\, these beginnings of responses too often remain confined within their small community of conception. \nIn order to enhance sharing between these disciplines and intensify exchanges on these themes\, the Société Géologique de France will organize\, for the first time\, the forum “Geosciences for Society”\, which will take place on Thursday\, December 1st \, 2022 at its premises\, 77 rue Claude Bernard in Paris. \nThis Forum will be open to all but is more specifically aimed at companies (small and large) active in the various fields of geosciences\, which will thus have the opportunity to get to know each other better and to discuss. \nThe day will be divided into two sessions\, each opened by a conference offering a broad view of major issues and likely to interest a wide range of companies: \nMorning: Major energy\, environmental and mineral resource supply issues with a plenary lecture by Eric Bergé\, Representative of the Shift Project and founding director of Peachtree \nAfternoon: New technologies at the service of Geosciences\, with a plenary conference by Olivier Peyret\, Chairman of Schlumberger France and Director of Schlumberger New Energy Europe \nThese conferences will be followed by a succession of pitches from the participants and will end with round tables. An open space will be devoted to posters or kakemonos to illustrate the presentations or to continue the exchanges. \nIt is planned to close this day with the awarding of the 2022 “Geology & Business” Prize\, followed by a festive evening to celebrate Sainte-Barbe\, a few days in advance. \nYou want to expand your professional network to develop your activities in the service of society by providing innovative solutions or sharing new data\, so reserve your place now to come and present your company and your activities and give yourself the opportunity to create new collaborations. \nMore information and registration: https://www.geosoc.fr/toutes-les-actualites/listid-21/mailid-1119-1er-forum-des-geosciences-pour-la-societe-01-decembre-2022.html

SUMMARY:EPWS ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2022 - Gender\, intersectionality and inclusion in the EU research context
DESCRIPTION:The up-to-date vision of science requires to approaching and developing science with a vision capable to comprise sex and gender as a research dimension\, as well as to consider how gender interweaves with other systems of power linked to social categories\, such as ethnicity\, social class\, disability\, sexual orientation\, age\, etc.\, producing vulnerabilities and obstacles. Intersectionality\, accordingly\, is one of “the must” in the present scientific landscape. \nThe 2022 annual conference is dedicated to the concept of intersectionality\, by focusing and discussing the following questions: How do\nwe as scientists –and in particular as women scientists– intend to interpret intersectionality\, a vision that requires to respect and promote the differences and peculiarities characterizing human beings and social dimensions? How do we manage the multiple dimensions involved in basic research and technological innovation? What kind of support would we want from EU research and gender equality policies? Which policies and measures would we like to encourage the EU to continue or to initiate in this respect? \nIn this conference\, EPWS wishes to give voice to its associations\, which are invited to present and discuss their visions\, experiences\, and challenges about intersectionality. A section of the conference will regard -as representative- the case of women migrants/refugees involved in science; needs and ongoing initiatives will be analyzed\, also through the narratives of women scientists of various disciplines and national backgrounds directly involved in the matter.

SUMMARY:Mary Anning and other inspiring female geoscientists
DESCRIPTION:Some pioneer women paved the way in geology. However\, they faced challenges for their voices to be heard and for their remarkable work to be recognised at their time. \nWe are inviting the authors of two fascinating books that pay tribute to these pioneer geologists: GEAS – Women Who Study the Earth and The Fossil Woman. A Life of Mary Anning. ENGIE coordinator Eva Hartai will be the host of the session. \nGEAS is an illustrated booklet featuring 12 pioneer women geoscientists. The publication is a travel through time giving voice to women geologists of different times\, historical contexts and nationalities. They all have something in common: they made an indelible mark on the strata of our knowledge. Spanish geologists Rosa María Mateos and Ana Ruíz Constan are the authors of this book and these 12 women were really an inspiration to them. The artist Nívola Uyá is the author of the beautiful illustrations of GEAS. \nThe remarkable palaeontologist Mary Anning is one of the women showcased in the book and she leads us to Tom Sharpe‘s biography The Fossil Woman. A Life of Mary Anning. Mary Anning was born in Lyme Regis in England in 1799 and was taught to look for fossils by her father who sold them to tourists. After he died\, the family continued to sell fossils and discovered what were thought to be fossil crocodiles. By 1820\, Mary was running the business and her discovery of a new fossil reptile\, Plesiosaurus\, in 1823 made her famous. Mary’s fossils and her expertise attracted scientists from across Britain\, Europe and even from North America to Lyme Regis to buy specimens from her for their collections and museums. She was more than just a collector and seller of fossils; she observed where and how they occurred and experimented with living animals to help her identify her finds. She was a professional palaeontologist. However\, at that time women were not admitted to most scientific societies\, so despite her fame and expertise\, and the respect in which she was held by her scientist friends\, Mary was unable to take part in the meetings where her discoveries were discussed. Today\, though\, she is better known than most of the men and more has been written about her than about almost any other geologist. \nFor more information go here: Webinar: Mary Anning and other inspiring female geoscientists – ENGIE Project

SUMMARY:EFG Webinar: Tackling the 21st Century Water Quality Challenges for Managed Aquifer Recharge
DESCRIPTION:On 15 November 2022\, the European Federation of Geologists (EFG) is organising the webinar ‘Tackling the 21st Century Water Quality Challenges for Managed Aquifer Recharge‘. The event is scheduled for 13:00 – 14:00 CET (Brussels time). \nThe presenter of the webinar will be Dr Yan Zheng\, Chair Professor at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) in Shenzhen\, China. The host of the session will be Dr Tamás Madarász\, Professor and Head of the Institute of Environmental Management at the University of Miskolc in Hungary\, and a Member of the EFG Panel of Experts on Hydrogeology. \nThe sustainability of groundwater is threatened by overexploitation and by pollution\, exacerbated by perturbations of hydrological cycle stemming from climate change exerting poorly understood water quantity and quality risks with uncertain outcomes. Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) has been shown as a sustainable nature-based engineering approach for enhancing climate resilience and other social\, economic and environmental benefits of groundwater. Yet to continue MAR implementation\, water quality and quantity challenges both need to be addressed to maintain resource integrity. This presentation discusses how MAR professionals may tackle the 21st century water quality challenges. New findings on incomplete biodegradation of antibiotics\, a type of trace organic pollutants\, will be described. Given the threat of a large number of novel chemical and biological entities\, it is suggested that groundwater monitoring programs pay more attention to them when justified\, especially when MAR is used to bank large quantities of groundwater. Policy recommendations such as demarcating a subsurface attenuation zone to continue to take advantage of the natural purification ability of the soil-aquifer systems\, and moving towards a risk-based regulatory approach for MAR under the framework of water recycling\, will be presented. \nFind more information and registration at the following link: https://bit.ly/3SGx3HH

SUMMARY:First European conference on community disaster preparedness on 27 October
DESCRIPTION:The EIB Institute\, in collaboration with the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre\, is pleased to invite you to the first European conference on community disaster preparedness. The conference\, which includes presentations\, panels and games\, will take place at the European Investment Bank headquarters in Luxembourg and online\, on 27 October from 10 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. See the agenda here. \nExtreme weather events are on the rise due to climate change\, resulting in floods\, wildfires and heavy storms. Being prepared can save not only lives\, but also things in the physical world that are dear to us. Being able to act in the right way and help others can also boost morale during difficult events and in the aftermath. \nThe conference will seek answers to questions such as: What are the main natural hazards in Europe and how will their occurrence increase with climate change? Are people prepared? Why do we need to prepare for such natural hazards? What difference does it make if individuals are also prepared? What happens before and after such an event? How do policymakers\, states and municipalities\, as well as civil protection authorities\, involve the public in preparing for natural hazards? Why are some communities more successful in preparing for the next natural hazard event? How do we structure the financing of preparedness for natural hazards? \nRegister here: https://institute.eib.org/2022/06/save-the-date-know-your-hazard/

SUMMARY:EFG Webinar: GEOfood – Connection between geology and food
DESCRIPTION:On 25 October 2022\, the European Federation of Geologists (EFG) is organising the webinar ‘GEOfood – Connection between geology and food‘. The event is scheduled for 13:00 – 14:00 CEST (Brussels time). \nThe GEOfood initiative was established in the Geoparks Magma in Norway\, Roku in Denmark and Reykjanes in Iceland as a brand reserved only for UNESCO Global Geoparks approved territories. The speaker of the webinar will be Sara Gentilini\, she is the leader of GEOfood and the project manager of the UNESCO Global Geopark Magma. Mónica Sousa\, Coordinator of the EFG Panel of Experts on Geological Heritage will be the host of the online session. \nThe GEOfood idea originated from the need of having common selected criteria for developing local food networks within UNESCO Global Geoparks and eventually valorising the products within specific tourist offers dedicated to geological heritage and local food which could increase the geoparks visibility and the people’s interest in geological heritage. \nThe GEOfood brand\, now owned by the Magma Geopark\, aims at collecting stories about local communities\, local traditions\, and the origin of the food raw materials in connection with the geological heritage of each UNESCO Global Geopark territory: its quality is based on the authenticity of the products\, the heritage of local people\, and the proximity of the ingredients. \nAll the food enterprises willing to use the GEOfood brand must use raw materials from the Geopark area and the GEOfood restaurants should serve at least one seasonal menu. This criterion is chosen to guarantee the support of local farmers\, and local entrepreneurs\, and the integration of low-scale economy strategies within the UNESCO Global Geopark. GEOfood is also contributing to the empowerment of communities and kids\, through educational programs linked with sustainability and climate change issues. \nUp to now\, the GEOfood initiative has been a successful project: in May 2022\, 34 UNESCO Global Geoparks were embracing the brand\, the criteria\, and its values\, developing more than 70 different local products and 30 local menus\, which all explained the connection between the raw material and the geological heritage. \nFind more information and registration: https://bit.ly/3fJAuPX
