SUMMARY:First European conference on community disaster preparedness on 27 October
DESCRIPTION:The EIB Institute\, in collaboration with the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre\, is pleased to invite you to the first European conference on community disaster preparedness. The conference\, which includes presentations\, panels and games\, will take place at the European Investment Bank headquarters in Luxembourg and online\, on 27 October from 10 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. See the agenda here. \nExtreme weather events are on the rise due to climate change\, resulting in floods\, wildfires and heavy storms. Being prepared can save not only lives\, but also things in the physical world that are dear to us. Being able to act in the right way and help others can also boost morale during difficult events and in the aftermath. \nThe conference will seek answers to questions such as: What are the main natural hazards in Europe and how will their occurrence increase with climate change? Are people prepared? Why do we need to prepare for such natural hazards? What difference does it make if individuals are also prepared? What happens before and after such an event? How do policymakers\, states and municipalities\, as well as civil protection authorities\, involve the public in preparing for natural hazards? Why are some communities more successful in preparing for the next natural hazard event? How do we structure the financing of preparedness for natural hazards? \nRegister here: https://institute.eib.org/2022/06/save-the-date-know-your-hazard/

SUMMARY:EFG Webinar: GEOfood – Connection between geology and food
DESCRIPTION:On 25 October 2022\, the European Federation of Geologists (EFG) is organising the webinar ‘GEOfood – Connection between geology and food‘. The event is scheduled for 13:00 – 14:00 CEST (Brussels time). \nThe GEOfood initiative was established in the Geoparks Magma in Norway\, Roku in Denmark and Reykjanes in Iceland as a brand reserved only for UNESCO Global Geoparks approved territories. The speaker of the webinar will be Sara Gentilini\, she is the leader of GEOfood and the project manager of the UNESCO Global Geopark Magma. Mónica Sousa\, Coordinator of the EFG Panel of Experts on Geological Heritage will be the host of the online session. \nThe GEOfood idea originated from the need of having common selected criteria for developing local food networks within UNESCO Global Geoparks and eventually valorising the products within specific tourist offers dedicated to geological heritage and local food which could increase the geoparks visibility and the people’s interest in geological heritage. \nThe GEOfood brand\, now owned by the Magma Geopark\, aims at collecting stories about local communities\, local traditions\, and the origin of the food raw materials in connection with the geological heritage of each UNESCO Global Geopark territory: its quality is based on the authenticity of the products\, the heritage of local people\, and the proximity of the ingredients. \nAll the food enterprises willing to use the GEOfood brand must use raw materials from the Geopark area and the GEOfood restaurants should serve at least one seasonal menu. This criterion is chosen to guarantee the support of local farmers\, and local entrepreneurs\, and the integration of low-scale economy strategies within the UNESCO Global Geopark. GEOfood is also contributing to the empowerment of communities and kids\, through educational programs linked with sustainability and climate change issues. \nUp to now\, the GEOfood initiative has been a successful project: in May 2022\, 34 UNESCO Global Geoparks were embracing the brand\, the criteria\, and its values\, developing more than 70 different local products and 30 local menus\, which all explained the connection between the raw material and the geological heritage. \nFind more information and registration: https://bit.ly/3fJAuPX

SUMMARY:REFLECT Final Conference
DESCRIPTION:The REFLECT project will present the main results of its research on geothermal fluid properties at the Final Conference organised on 19 October 2022 as a side-event of the European Geothermal Congress 2022 in Berlin\, Germany. \nThe Horizon2020 REFLECT project\, funded by the European Commission\, addresses the challenge of determining geothermal fluid properties at in-situ geothermal conditions\, i.e.\, extremely hot or extremely saline fluids. The project has acquired new chemical\, physical and microbiological data from sampling of natural fluids and new thermodynamic and kinetic reaction data from experiments in the lab. These data were implemented in predictive models to determine fluid reactions at extreme conditions\, and into a comprehensive European Fluid Atlas. REFLECT researchers have also developed a downhole sampler for high-temperature geothermal wells. \nThe results presented during the Final Conference will enable operators to significantly increase technology performance and reduce maintenance costs or downtimes and\, thus\, reduce operational costs and increase the number of economically viable geothermal projects.

SUMMARY:Repowering Europe for a sustainable EU strategic autonomy
DESCRIPTION:The current converging geopolitical\, economic\, and climate crises are impacting every aspect of our lives. The way we tackle them now will have far-reaching implications for the years to come. In this context\, the European Commission’s REPowerEU Plan was designed to support the difficult task of aligning energy policy efforts along these fields in a coherent and effective manner. \nResearch has a pivotal role to play in this endeavour and EERA\, through the REPowerEU Manifesto\, shows that its community of researchers is best placed to address both short-term emergencies and long-term constraints\, provided Europe is able to create the space and the adequate conditions for this to happen. \nAs an introduction to feed the discussions that will follow\, EERA will officially launch its REPowerEU Manifesto containing the European clean energy research community’s response to the REPowerEU Plan. \nModality – This is an in-person event. However\, broadcasting of the event will also be available for participants to follow the conference online. \nNetworking lunch – Following the conference\, EERA is pleased to invite the attendants to a walking lunch where they will have the opportunity to exchange their perspectives on the topic addressed and identify potential opportunities for collaboration. \n

SUMMARY:The European SDG Summit 2022 : Together for an Inclusive Green Deal
DESCRIPTION:After the pandemic and amid the outbreak of the war in Ukraine\, the world needs to accelerate the journey towards climate neutrality and the adoption of an inclusive approach to the green and digital transition. \nHowever\, the lack of preparedness to disruptions to workforces\, supply chains\, communities\, and consumers caused by the war and the transition to net-zero\, risk exacerbating inequalities within and between countries. \nEurope\, in line with its welfare state experience\, is taking the lead to leave no one behind in this transformation with the Green Deal\, REPowerEU\, the European Pillar of Social Rights Action Plan\, the Just Transition Mechanism\, and the NextGenerationEU Programme. \nNevertheless\, the scale and magnitude of the effort ahead require not only individual commitments to net-zero but also collaborative actions from all stakeholders. \nFor this reason\, ahead of the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) in Egypt\, CSR Europe is convening sustainability leaders worldwide at the European SDG Summit 2022: Together for an Inclusive Green Deal.

SUMMARY:Earth Science Week
DESCRIPTION:The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) is pleased to announce that the theme of Earth Science Week 2022 will be “Earth Science for a Sustainable World.” The event\, to be held October 9-15\, 2022\, will emphasize the essential role of Earth science in helping people make decisions that maintain and strengthen the planet’s ability to support thriving life. \nAll people share the same planet Earth. As individuals and societies engage with Earth’s systems\, their actions echo across time. Within people’s daily lives\, they are challenged to provide for human health\, safety\, and prosperity\, while preserving environmental sustainability. \n“Sustainability refers to practices that promote the capacity of the planet to support life throughout the biosphere\, which also involves interactions with the other Earth systems\,” AGI Executive Director Jonathan Arthur said on announcing the theme. “Earth science knowledge has a central role to play in addressing societal challenges\, including global sustainability.” \nThe Earth Science Week 2022 theme provides opportunities for everyone to enhance their understanding of geoscience — including the professions\, technologies\, and practices that contribute to the sustainability of the Earth\, society\, and all of life. Program resources and activities will engage young people and others in exploring the many ways that Earth science can and does help promote a sustainable world. Raising awareness of the geosciences nationally and around the globe\, AGI leads Earth Science Week in cooperation with its sponsors and the geoscience community as a service to the public. Each October\, community groups\, educators\, and interested citizens organize celebratory events. Earth Science Week offers opportunities to discover the Earth sciences and engage in responsible stewardship of the Earth. Learn more at https://www.earthsciweek.org.

SUMMARY:Learning from the ground: Why geosciences matter for future generations
DESCRIPTION:Even though it is vital for our life\, geoscience is not a core subject in public education. However\, the knowledge of geosciences helps us to manage energy\, minerals and water – the resources which are essential for human life. The basic aim of this conference is to emphasise the importance of geosciences for future generations. Topics which have high relevance and interest nowadays will be discussed and the gender aspects of geo-professions will also be touched on. \nThe event is organised under the umbrella of the first International Geodiversity Day and the European Year of Youth 2022.  \nThe conference welcomes school students\, educators\, policy makers\, media representatives and anybody else interested in Earth sciences. \nRegister here: https://www.eventbrite.be/e/learning-from-the-ground-why-geosciences-matter-for-future-generations-tickets-381123730337

SUMMARY:International Geodiversity Day
DESCRIPTION:Geodiversity is the natural portion of the planet that is not alive both at the surface and in the interior. It includes the Earth’s minerals\, rocks\, fossils\, soils\, sediments\, landforms and topography\, as well as hydrological features such as rivers and lakes and the processes that make and modify these features. It is the source of the materials that build towns and cities and serves as the support system for all agricultural systems by providing soil and water. Geodiversity provides resources for energy generation\, including the materials used to manufacture wind turbines and solar panels. Through its diverse landscapes\, colours and forms\, geodiversity inspires artists and fascinates tourists. \nDespite this\, most people are unaware of the extent to which we depend on geodiversity. It is\, therefore\, crucial to promote a better understanding of the Earth’s dynamic processes to ensure that citizens make informed policy choices for a more sustainable society\, an essential element in the implementation of the United Nations’ 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. \nIn that sense\, International Geodiversity Day will offer an opportunity to showcase how an education in geological sciences can provide humanity with sustainable solutions to pressing challenges such as responsible resource extraction\, disaster risk reduction\, mitigation of climate change and biodiversity loss. It will also raise awareness of the critical linkages between geodiversity and all life forms. \nInternational days are annual observances instigated by the United Nations to generate awareness and action on issues of concern\, or to celebrate human achievement. \nUNESCO and IUGS sponsor the UNESCO International Geoscience and Geoparks Programme (IGGP)\, which will be responsible for administering International Diversity Day. \nAs the only United Nations body with a mandate to support research and capacity-building in geology and geophysics\, UNESCO will use International Geodiversity Day to promote the goals of The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development\, as well as the creation of new UNESCO Global Geoparks in Africa\, the Arab region and Latin America\, in particular.

SUMMARY:CCS4G Symposium 2022 – Super Critical Connections (Co-located event)
DESCRIPTION:A symposium on Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) for Geoscientists \nIn many ways the CCS world with its wells\, reservoirs and sealing cap-rocks will be familiar to PESGB members. However\, in other ways it will be quite different. The twin necessities of driving costs down and ensuring long-term public safety will demand collaboration and openness like never before. \nIn response to demand from the PESGB membership\, we have scheduled this one-day symposium on the geoscience aspects of geological CO2 storage. The conveners are soliciting oral presentations from industry experts to meet the goal of offering deep technical insights into G&G topics pertinent to CCS. \nIf you are a petroleum-geoscientist considering ‘what next’ in a changing world\, this event is designed for you. CCS is essential in meeting the worlds Net Zero targets. The anticipated exponential growth of CCS projects worldwide will need a major effort to re-purpose skills from the oil and natural gas industry. \nOrganised by: Exploring The Energy Transition Special Interest Group\nConvenors: Kevin Dale (Sasol) & Neil Frewin (Shell)
