DESCRIPTION:Our economic development has been based on an unsustainable exploitation and use of natural resources. World extraction of material resources has tripled over the past 40 years and is expected to at least double with the development of emerging economies. Today\, we extract and consume our planet’s resources much faster than what the Earth can renew itself. At the same time\, transitioning to a low-carbon economy and energy system may increase demand for some key minerals and strategic materials. \nThe Veolia Institute’s 10th International Conference\, held in partnership with the Oxford Martin School\, offers perspectives on how to make strategic materials and mineral resources available for a sustainable future\, one that is transitioning to a low-carbon economy. SUMMARY:VII Balkan Mining Congress : "Balkan Mining for the Friendship and Progress"
DESCRIPTION:The Balkan Mining Congress is an international scientific meeting devoted to mining\, geology and close fields\, which is held every two years. The 10 countries of the Balkans are participating in the organization: Serbia\, Bulgaria\, Turkey\, Slovenia\, Macedonia\, Romania\, Bosnia and Herzegovina – Republic of Srpska\, Montenegro\, Greece and Albania.  \nAt the head of the organization is the Standing International Coordinating Committee consisting of one representative of each of the aforementioned countries. The representative of Bosnia and Herzegovina from the Republic of Srpska participates from the founding in the work of the Standing International Coordinating Committee and the organization of the Balkan Mining Congress. \nOver 1500 experts from more than 30 countries participated in the conferences held so far in Varna\, Belgrade\, Izmir\, Ljubljana\, Ohrid and Petrosan\, about 750 scientific and professional papers were published and published. SUMMARY:15th European Week of Regions and Cities
DESCRIPTION:The context\nIn 2017\, the European Week of Regions and Cities will reach its 15th birthday. It is a moment of both looking back and looking forward\, whilst tackling the challenges that the EU regional and urban policy should be addressing\, as of today\, and over the coming years. \nThe debate on Europe’s future was kick-started by the Rome Treaties’ anniversary (in March) and will continue to unfold throughout 2017. The European Week of Regions and Cities will be an opportunity for EU regions and cities to contribute to this debate and to feed into the political mainstream examples and inputs from the regional and urban angle to shape Europe’s future.   Moreover\, the European Week will discuss the Cohesion Report and the EU multiannual financial framework 2020-2026\, and thus be a key platform for gathering and presenting the views of the regions and cities on both the budget and the subsequent legislative proposals with regard to cohesion policy and rural development. \nEurope’s regions and cities face major challenges with profound consequences\, such as adaptation to globalisation and to a new wave of automation in the workplace\, as well as an urgent need to integrate migrant populations. These challenges can be turned into opportunities for economic and social progress\, provided that the right policies and programmes are implemented at all levels. \nThemes in 2017\nDiscussions during the European Week of Regions and Cities will examine the nature of these challenges and how they are playing out in different geographical contexts. Under the main headline of ‘Regions and Cities working for a better future’\, the event will focus on three sub-themes: \nBuilding resilient regions and cities – #LocalResilience\nThis strand will focus on the economic and social effects of globalisation and the policy response at EU\, national\, regional and local level. Among the negative risks are those of (further) delocalisation of lower added-value industries\, the loss of low-skilled jobs\, new sources of employment that are often service-based\, precarious and lower-paid. It will also represent an opportunity to present and discuss innovative ways to foster change and in particular on how to make Europe’s cities smarter and more resilient. \nRegions and cities as change agents – #TakeAction\nThis strand will consider the possible adaptations to EU regional and urban policy for the next 5-10 years on\, and encourage a more general reflection on the EU from the perspective of regions and cities. It will offer a platform to illustrate the effective contributions EU regions and cities  are making to the European project and will allow them to provide input to the main political debate in parallel with the ‘Reflecting on Europe’ process launched by the Committee of the Regions. This strand will also allow discussion of the results achieved so far and assessment of cohesion policy performances and benefits\, in particular with regards to reducing disparities\, while at the same time looking ahead at the future prospects. \nSharing knowledge to deliver results – #SharingKnowledge\nUnder this strand\, regional and national authorities implementing programmes supported by the European Structural and Investments funds will have the opportunity to exchange experiences and good practices relating to programme management during the period 2014-2020. Key issues include the consideration of ways to reduce the administrative burden on beneficiaries through simplification\, as well as different means of strengthening institutions and building administrative capacity among administrations at all levels. \nDiscussions with practitioners will be integrated with input from academia as well as from participants from non-EU countries that are interested in the process of European integration\, both from an institutional point of view and in terms of policies that promote European cohesion.

DESCRIPTION:This is a course endorsed by EFG \nLast Friday of every September (in connection with the European Researchers’ Night event series) European Researchers’ Nights (ERNs) are a pan-European series of events funded by the European Commission\, organised on the last Friday of every September since 2005. ERNs mobilise scientific\, academic and research organisations with the aim of giving the public the opportunity to meet researchers in an informal setting. The overall objective of ERNs is to achieve better awareness among the general public concerning the importance of science in everyday life and to combat stereotypes about researchers. The longer-term strategic objective of ERNs is to encourage young people to embark on a scientific career. \nVolcanoes’ Night I-II-III was an ERN project series funded by the EC FP7 and H2020 programmes between 2012-2015 (EC contract No. 316558\, 610050\, 633310\, www.nochedevolcanes.es). The objective of the project was to use volcanoes as a background against which the role of geoscientists could be explained to the public. The scope of Volcanoes’ Night was exclusively dedicated to geoscience\, and in this respect it stands out among all other ERN projects\, which are always more general in scope. \nEC funding for Volcanoes’ Night ended on 1 December 2015. The project has now entered an official 5-year exploitation phase\, during which our aim is to widely disseminate the achievements of this project. Accordingly\, we are aiming to continue Volcanoes’ Night ourselves and encourage other institutions to organise such an event themselves with the aim of educating the public about the work of geoscientists. \nThe “training course” is thus in fact a single-night Event\, during which a range of awareness raising actions takes place. There is a several-month long awareness raising period that precedes the organisation of the event. Past activities and programmes are described here: http://en.nochedevolcanes.es/nights/ \nAmongst the numerous activities previously offered to the attendees: hands-on experiments\, shows\, science cafés\, movie theatre\, live connections with scientists from all over the world\, kids’ programme\, poster session\, contest rewarding ceremonies\, live music\, European Corner and similar actions\, addressing the public at large with a strong focus on kids and young people. During the course of the activities the participating scientists are not only expected to talk about their field of research\, but also share their experiences on how students can approach science and research institutions\, providing a perfect scenario to attract young people to science careers. The main objectives of Volcanoes’ Night consist of enhancing public recognition of geoscientists and their work\, of their impact on citizens’ daily lives and well-being\, as well as of showcasing the researchers as ordinary people whose work is fascinating and fun\, in such a way to stimulate young people’s interest for geoscience and geoscientific careers. In this context\, the approach relies on the fascination and respect that volcanoes have always exerted over the public. Beyond the objectives referred to above\, the Volcanoes’ Night also aims at bridging the gap between science and the general public of different ages\, so as well intends to provide first-hand information about geoscientific topics to improve the understanding of Earth and geological processes/applications. \nThe course is free of charge for the participants.

SUMMARY:European Parliament Gypsum Forum
DESCRIPTION:Eurogypsum will demonstrate its perspective\, on the city of the future\, during the European Parliament Gypsum Forum\, under the chairmanship of Julie Girling at the European Parliament premises in Brussels with the European Builders Confederation. \nEurope is the most urbanized continent outside of the Americas\, with 73% of the current population living in urban environments; this is expected to rise to 80% by 2050. The largest challenge for the vast majority of European cities is their capacity to adapt to the evolving needs of the inhabitants who face scarcity of housing with the resultant increase in cost of living. Most of the European cities also need to modernise their suburban areas\, having been built in the 60s and 70s\, the existing building stock often fails to meet today’s inhabitants’ expectations of comfort and quality\, at an affordable running cost.\nThese trends call for widespread affordable solutions which involves multiple stakeholders\, at many levels: municipalities\, urban planners\, architects\, developers\, collective housing owners and contractors. \nEurogypsum wishes to demonstrate solutions to this challenge\, by promoting affordable and modern ways to speedily increase available housing\, a better quality and more sustainable living\, and an optimised cost of investment. The solutions are based around the transformation of the existing building at a significantly reduced cost when compared to the more radical approach of demolition and redevelopment. They rely on modern\, lightweight methods of construction. Good examples already exist in Europe and Eurogypsum wants to share these innovative transformations and architectural practices with EU representatives.

DESCRIPTION:HOSTED BY THE FACULTY OF GEO-INFORMATION SCIENCE AND EARTH OBSERVATION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF TWENTE\, ENSCHEDE\, NETHERLANDS  13-15 SEPTEMBER 2017 \nThe Group on Earth Observations (GEO) is a voluntary partnership of governments and organizations that envisions “a future wherein decisions and actions for the benefit of humankind are informed by coordinated\, comprehensive and sustained Earth observations and information[i]”. \nThe Human Planet is a new initiative in the GEO 2017-2019 work programme supporting the GEO Strategic Plan 2016-2025.  The Human Planet aims to support novel evidence-based assessment of the human presence on the planet Earth. The Human Planet leverages on advances of Earth Observation technologies and geo-spatial data analytics for improving the global awareness on the spatial patterns and processes of the today’s urbanizing world[ii].  New open\, inclusive and consistent data are needed for assessing humanity’s impact on the planet\, access to resources\, and exposure to risk. New knowledge is needed in order to translate these new data into actionable information to support decision making by governments\, organizations and individuals. \nData scientists\, decision makers\, and professionals compose the Human Planet partnership. As of February 2016\, the partner contributors list includes more than 150 individuals belonging to 85 different organizations including academies\, international stakeholders\, governmental bodies and private firms.  The partners of the Human Planet are committed to develop a new generation of measurements and information products that provide new scientific evidence and a comprehensive understanding of the human presence on the Planet in support of global policy processes with agreed\, actionable and goal-driven metrics. The Human Planet initiative aims to support the post-2015 international frameworks: the UN Third Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III\, 2016) \, the post-2015 Framework on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)\, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)\, and the UNISDR’s Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 . Post-2015 international frameworks are accompanied by targets that are further elaborated and monitored through indicators that focus on measurable outcomes. These indicators are action oriented\, global in nature and universally applicable. The Human Planet initiative operates in an open and free data access policy\, with the mission to maximize the access to data and statistics to ensure that no one is left behind and  that the information gaps are filled. \nThe Human Planet partnership supports the production of the “Atlas of the Human Planet”\, a yearly periodic release of the main findings collected and discussed within the partnership and presented in international forums dedicated to the monitoring of post-2015 frameworks. The Atlas of the Human Planet 2016 was launched at the Habitat III conference (Quito Ecuador\, 2016)[iii]. The edition 2017 of the Atlas will be presented at the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (Cancun Mexico 2017). The 2018 edition of the Atlas will be presented at the World Urban Forum 9 (Kuala Lumpur\, Malaysia). \nThe 2017 Human Planet Forum has three main objectives: \n\nto showcase the work done so far\,\nto seek additional support and enlarge the partnership\, and\nto consolidate the governance and the future action plan of the partnership.\n\nThe forum is open to established and potential partners interested to engage with the GEO Human Planet.

SUMMARY:Workshop: From Exploration to Feasibility – Best Practice Methods in Sampling\, Quality Control and Evaluation
DESCRIPTION:This is a course endorsed by EFG \nThe reporting of mineral resources and other geo-technical results is considered essential to enable the funding and sustainable development of mining operations worldwide. This 1-day workshop introduces the participant to all key aspects of mineral resource reporting in the exploration and mining industry. Participants will learn about the mining life cycle and the steps involved to delineate a mineral deposit. The principles and limitations of surface and drillhole sampling will be discussed and a focus put on evaluating the overall technical work conducted on a mineral deposit throughout the mining cycle using the PERC reporting code. Another aim of this interactive workshop will be to facilitate a knowledge and experience exchange between the presenter and the audience\, and to encourage a discussion of EU legislation and mineral policy requirements. Therefore\, the course content is supported by practical examples from major mining regions and mineral deposit styles where the PERC reporting code has been successfully/ unsuccessfully applied. \nThe workshop will introduce the following themes:\n1. Introduction to the Mining Cycle and Raw Materials Value Chain\n2. Reporting of Mineral Resources and Exploration results: fundamentals and\nrequirements\, the role of the PERC resource reporting code\n3. Surface sampling: principles and methodology\, role and importance of orientation\nsurveys\n4. Drilling and drillhole sampling: principles and methodology\, importance of\nsampling strategies in different exploration and mining scenarios\n5. Analytical geochemistry and sample assays: overview & best choice of\nmethodology\n6. QAQC: principles and evaluation of sampling and analytical quality using QC plots\nand charts. Examples will be presented for QAQC in different stages of the mining\ncycle.\n7. Review of the workshop and outlook \nThe Workshop is provided by BDG Germany and the course leader is EurGeol Benedict Steiner. The price is 208 Euro for BDG-members and members of other national associations of the EFG (incl. titleholders) Non members pay 258 Euros. The course is aiming at professional geologists working in the field of exploration geology and geology of raw materials.
