SUMMARY:Soil Classification and Education Conference
DESCRIPTION:Globalization and global environmental issues\, as well as unification of scientific research and teaching on the EU and global levels require harmonization of technical languages\, such as the terminology used in soil science. Important part of our technical language is soil description and classification. Despite the long-term development of the unified system – World Reference Base for Soil Resources (WRB)\, it is still not used by the teaching staff in Europe on a satisfactory level. National/local focus in soil sciences teaching still dominates that complicates exchange of information\, students and professionals. The aim of this conference is to present solutions for international education in soil science\, elaborated within the Erasmus+ FACES project\, to present the new attempts to soil description and classification. Participants’ experiences and thoughts related to soil science teaching would be a frame for discussions\, both indoor and outdoor ones.

SUMMARY:Geochemical Interpretation Tools for Exploration and Mining Geologists: Examples from SE Ireland\, Finland and sub-Saharan Africa
DESCRIPTION:Multi-element trace geochemical surveys are a standard tool in detailed and regional geochemical exploration. Whilst in the past univariate anomaly detection along with a thorough analysis of ore element assemblages were considered routine interpretation workflows\, affordable trace element geochemistry now provides the necessary tools to interpret bedrock geology\, mineralisation systems and further applications in mining and mineral processing. \nMost governmental geological surveys make regional geochemical datasets available which are of invaluable use to exploration geologists. The Tellus SE Ireland dataset will be investigated during this workshop and implications for regional prospectivity discussed. \nParticipants will be required to bring a laptop and ioGAS software which can be downloaded as a demo version from http://reflexnow.com/iogas. \nThe workshop aims to introduce the following themes: \n1. Geochemistry tools in mining and mineral exploration – examples from Ireland\, Finland and Sub-Saharan Africa. \n2. Introduction to the Tellus SE Ireland dataset and regional geology \n3. Digests\, analytical techniques and detection limits \n4. Dataset QC and ioGAS workflow overview \n5. Univariate anomaly mapping \n6. Ore element assemblages and mapping \n7. Applications of trace element geochemistry in regional mapping and mineral systems analysis \n

SUMMARY:6th EWA/JSWA/WEF Joint Conference: Resilience of the Water Sector
DESCRIPTION:Resilience is a strong emerging theme within the water sector. From long term water resource availability and water quality impacts of droughts\, to the need for resilience against short lead time disruptive events such as floods and earthquakes. These types of events not only disrupt water sector infrastructure and operations\, they also affect other infrastructure that a reliable water sector depends on. This includes electrical power supplies\, telecommunications\, and transportation as well as disruption to the supply chain and workforce. The impact of such events can be long lasting and far-reaching\, affecting negatively on customers\, the environment\, and business performance. Ultimately\, resilience is a significant business risk management as well as an infrastructure planning issue. \nThis joint conference will explore ways in which the sector in its broadest terms is developing resilient systems\, assets\, and operations so that business continuity risk is well managed in the face of adverse conditions. The intention is to share experience from across the world covering: real life examples of lessons learned from major events; good response and recovery practices; and current activities that are strengthening resilience.

SUMMARY:Industry Career opportunities for young geoscientists - EGU General Assembly 2018
DESCRIPTION:The topics to be addressed among the abovementioned with the proposed Townhall meeting are:\n1. How to transit from academia to industry;\n2. Obtaining a professional title: why the industry asks geologists for one;\n3. Why the industry demands qualifications\, experience and ethics (from professional geologists);\n4. Periodical renewal of professional qualifications titles. \nGeoscience is an exciting field of practical sciences as it offers a plethora of working possibilities\, for most of us outside the academic community. Many young geologists are drawn to study the geology based on the general public perception of geologists being mainly scientists working at universities\, museums and research laboratories. This picture represents of course only partially the reality. According to AGI (Status of Recent Geoscience Graduates 2016) 40% of geologists with BSc\, 80% of geologists with MSc\, and 10% of geologists with PhD are employed by the industry and this fact has to be more clearly advocated among students of geology/geosciences. Hand in hand with this activity it needs to be presented to students and to young geologists that are considering to leave the university to follow a professional career path in industry that this includes stimulating working environments\, a perpetual professional\, and personal growth\, constant challenges and last but not least\, good salaries as well as adventure and a variety of tasks inside and outside of the field of geoscience. \nWith the need of clear proof of the experience a geologist has\, and/or the high responsibility towards her/his team of co-workers and contractors when working within the industry\, an official certification of professional qualifications\, experience and ethics is an advantage for a geologist/geoscientist. Consequentially\, obtaining a professional title such as the EFG’s European Geologist that could be acquired by geologists via the peer-review process under the supervision of national (AIPG\, GSC) or supra-national associations (EFG) is a crucial step towards easier first time employment or migration to the industry. To achieve the best results this process needs to be facilitated by the industry and by the professional associations that issue and manage professional titles\, using various vehicles such as active instruments (i.e. mentoring programs)\, or passive instruments (i.e. e-tools\, workshops\, hackathons etc.).

SUMMARY:"Integrated Hydrosystem Modelling 2018" Conference
DESCRIPTION:Terrestrial water resources are coupled hydrosystems with compartments reaching from the atmosphere to aquifers. Their sustainable management requires predictive models simulating all relevant hydrological and (biogeo)chemical processes. The related processes are uncertain; they are affected by heterogeneity\, and undergo change. \nThe Research Training Group “Integrated Hydrosystem Modelling” of the Universities of Tübingen\, Hohenheim\, and Stuttgart targets multi-disciplinary\, cross-compartimental modelling of flow and reactive transport under uncertainty. \n16 internationally renowned specialists in various aspects of integrated hydrosystem modelling will give keynote lectures on recent issues in modelling coupled systems.

SUMMARY:World Symposium on Climate Change and Biodiversity
DESCRIPTION:Climate Change and a whole and global warming in particular\,  are known to have a negative impact on biodiversity in  three main ways. Firstly\, increases in temperatures are known to be detrimental to a number of organisms\, especially those in sensitive habitats such as coral reefs and rainforests. Secondly\, the pressures posed by a changing climate  may lead to sets of responses in areas as varied as phenology\, range and physiology of living organismss\, often leading to changes in life cycles (especially but not only in reproduction)\, losses in productivity or even death.

SUMMARY:KINDRA Final Conference
DESCRIPTION:Groundwater and hydrogeology-related research activities cover a wide spectrum of research areas at EU and national levels. However\, groundwater issues are quite often either ignored or considered only in insufficient detail and separated from the associated surface water bodies\, despite of its critical importance as renewable\, high-quality\, naturally protected (but still vulnerable) resource that has significant impacts on both surface water bodies and ecosystems. The KINDRA project created a critical mass for scientific knowledge exchange of hydrogeology research\, to ensure wide applicability of research results\, including support for innovation and development. The overall objective of the project is to take stock of our current knowledge of hydrogeology through an inventory of research results\, activities\, projects and programmes at national and international scale. \nThe final conference is aimed to communicate the results achieved by the project\, from the new classification system\, to the inventory of hydrogeological products (EIGR) and its content of more than 2000 metadata\, to be used for evaluating the state-of-the-art of European research&knowledge on groundwater. \nPlease find the programme and the registration form here.

SUMMARY:Towards a European Open Science Cloud
DESCRIPTION:Towards a European Open Science Cloud – how to harness the power of open data?\nGetting inspiration from the work of the Swiss Data Science Center \n\n\n\n“Opening science once science has been done is too late” \nThis motto illustrates well the rationale behind the creation of the Swiss Data Science Center (SDSC). If science results are not tracable and reusable\, trust in data produced by others can not be achieved. Most current archive services do not allow the ‘reutilisability’ of science results. This represents a strong barrier for the scientific process at global level. The methodology used to get to research results\, as well as connectivity between research results should be captured in order to establish the trust so much needed in the scientific world. Only then one can talk about “truly open global science”. This is a central aspect of any open science infrastructure developed at national\, European or global level.
