SUMMARY:ReSToRE - Researching Social Theories\, Resources\, and Environment Summer School
DESCRIPTION:Our reliance on the Earth for water\, energy\, and minerals significantly affects climate change\, economic prosperity\, the environment\, and human health and wellbeing. \nThere is an urgent need for a wider discussion on how we will resource present and future generations in a sustainable way. \nThis Summer School will address key issues at the nexus of social science and Earth sciences: \n•How do we as individuals value the discovery\, extraction\, use\, and disposal of Earth resources?\n•Do individuals understand the positive and negative consequences of using these resources?\n•What activities are acceptable to ensure a reliable supply of resources and what are not – to whom\, why\, and under what conditions?\n•What are the implications of the uneven geographical distribution of Earth resources on local\, regional\, and national communities?\n•What ethical dilemmas play a role in the development of resources?\n•How could companies in both the extractive and manufacturing sectors contribute to the debate?\n\n\nLed by international scholars\, practitioners\, and stakeholders\, participants will prepare discussion papers on emerging themes in this developing area of research. \nStudents will be offered the opportunity to present the output of the summer school at the International Geological Congress in March 2020. \n\nPlease email your application to restore@icrag-centre.org before the 1st of March 2019.

SUMMARY:Heraklion 2019 - 7th International conference on sustainable solid waste management
DESCRIPTION:The Conference aims to address the significant issue of sustainable solid waste management through the promotion of safe practices & effective technologies. The Conference focuses mainly on modern solid waste technologies. It aims to stimulate the interest of scientists and citizens and inform them about the latest developments in the field of municipal solid waste management. Separation at source\, Biological Treatment\, the treatment at central facilities\, waste prevention\, biowaste utilization\, recycling promotion\, Waste-to-energy technologies & energy recovery\, smart technologies for waste management\, sludge management\, agricultural and livestock waste\, management of specific waste streams(construction & demolition waste\, waste from electrical and electronic equipment\, etc.)\, biotechnology\, Best Available techniques\, symbiosis networks\, energy consumption and saving\, carbon footprint and water footprint\, zero-waste initiatives\, plastics and bioplastics\, marine litter constitute main conference subjects. Special attention will be drawn to the valorization prospects & the products from solid waste\, such as: biofuels\, compost\, materials\, etc. It is also our ambition to strengthen the link of the applied research with industry. Hazardous waste & Household hazardous waste also constitute target area of the conference. Emphasis will be placed on circular economy in all key action areas (production\, consumption\, waste management\, secondary raw materials\, innovation\, investment & monitoring) and all priority sectors (food waste\, plastics\, biomass and bio-based-products\, construction & demolition waste\, critical raw materials)\, as well as waste management issues and resource efficiency in islands and generally isolated and remote areas.

SUMMARY:11th World Congress on Water Resources and Environment “Managing Water Resources for a Sustainable Future”
DESCRIPTION:The aim of the Congress is to discuss innovation in water resources management to address current and future challenges: growing uncertainty\, greater extremes\, increasing demand\, water scarcity and global change. While traditional management practice is still effective\, new technologies and approaches are emerging to better protect\, regulate\, allocate and recycle water resources. Sustainable management of water resources in the 21st Century requires a comprehensive understanding of the interaction of complex natural and social components in a changing context. The Congress will seek scientifically sound and economically-efficient solutions that are environmentally friendly\, socially acceptable and climate-proof. \nThe Congress intends to be a forum for scientists and engineers from diverse cultures around the world to discuss their understanding of water resources systems at a diversity of scales and to promote environmentally sustainable water resources management.

SUMMARY:EuroWorkshop: Geology and the energy transition
DESCRIPTION:The European Federation of Geologists (EFG)\, the Royal Geological and Mining Society of the Netherlands (KNGMG) and CHPM2030 (a Horizon 2020 project) will jointly organise a EuroWorkshop on Geology and the energy transition on May 23\, 2019 in Delft\, the Netherlands. \nAn optional fieldtrip “Exploring the Anthropocene”\, on the Sedimentary dynamics of the Dutch coast – showing how the current Dutch landscape was formed during the Holocene sea level rise – will be organised on May 24\, 2019. \nThe 77th EFG Council meeting will be held on May 25 and 26\, 2019 in Delft (for EFG delegates only). \nThe world is changing\, the energy industry is changing\, and geologist needs to change with it. As we consider renewable energies\, new models on how to distribute energy to its users\, policies to encourage initiatives and our remaining dependency on the traditional energy industry\, it remains uncertain how our society will come through the energy transition and where geoscientists will fit in the mix. Will they still have a central role and how will geoscientists adapt to this new world? \nThe world is trying to find a way through these issues by diversifying into different types of energy\, such as biofuels\, hydrogen\, solar and wind. We will show examples that geoscientists are showing the path on how renewable energy benefits from the knowledge of geoscientists. This geological knowledge enables a durable and safe transition. \nObjectives \nThe aim of this EuroWorkshop is to provide insights into the energy transition and how it has affected geosciences. The first session will be discussing the European policies that have been adopted to encourage the energy transition to gain an understanding of how these policies will provide directions for future developments: “Policy discussed by policymakers”. \nThe aim for the afternoon is to present actual projects where geoscience plays a key role in the realisation of the energy transition: “Projects presented by geologists for geologists”. \nFurthermore\, it is our aim that the provided information and knowledge will improve our understanding of the future role geoscientists have to play in the energy transition\, facilitate cross-fertilisation between different scientific areas and contribute to the objective to bring our society a step closer to reaching the goal of zero CO2 emissions.

SUMMARY:Science and Policy Forum for the Implementation of Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction
DESCRIPTION:The new paradigm of risk-sensitive and risk-informed development triggered by the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030 requires sound foundations in knowledge and understanding of risk and resilience to contribute to the attainment of the Paris Climate Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals. The Sendai Framework\, in adopting ‘Understanding Disaster Risk’ as its first priority for action\, emphasizes the importance of science and technology in its implementation. It calls for enhanced scientific and technical work on disaster risk reduction in the context of sustainable development and climate change and highlights the need to prioritize the development and dissemination of science-based risk knowledge\, technology and innovation.\nBut it is not just about understanding risk – it is also about building a more integrated science basis which brings together science disciplines from all aspects of the 2030 Agenda\, and most importantly ensuring science is used by policy-makers in support of risk-informed decisions and investment.\nThe Global Platform with its focus on the resilience dividend is a key opportunity to highlight the role of science\, showcase its opportunities and commitment and encourage dialogue with Governments\, private sector representatives and other practitioners.\nScience and policy discussions at the Global Platform will be linked and mutually benefitting from the Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD) and STI Forum\, both under the leadership of ECOSOC and taking place from 13-17 May 2019 in Geneva and New York respectively.\nThe results of the discussions will also feed into the High-Level Political Forum\, High-level Dialogue on Financing for Development and UN Climate Summit under the auspices of the UN General Assembly in September\, and other critical lobal and regional events with the aim to link the global 2030 agreements and their respective scientific basis closer together.
