SUMMARY:The International Conference on Unsaturated Soil
DESCRIPTION:The 8th International Conference on Unsaturated Soils “Towards Unsaturated Soils Engineering” organised by the Hellenic Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (HSSMGE) will be held on Milos Island\, Greece\, between May 3rd to 5th\, 2023. The UNSAT2023\, organized under the auspices of the ISSMGE Technical Committee TC106\, follows the successful past UNSAT conferences held in Hong Kong (2018)\, Sydney (2014)\, Barcelona (2010)\, Phoenix (2006)\, Recife (2002)\, Beijing (1998) and Paris (1995). \nUNSAT2023 aims at providing researchers and practitioners alike with a unique opportunity of sharing up-to-date knowledge on Unsaturated Soil Mechanics and Engineering. The 3rd Blight Lecture\, several keynote lectures by renowned experts in the field\, numerous papers and a parallel technical exhibition in a relaxed environment will make for a most fruitful scientific event and a unique opportunity for the unsaturated soils community to meet again in person after several years of Covid restrictions. Recent experience in Greece has shown that in-person events are now possible provided nothing new emerges with the world pandemic. \nFor more information\, see here: http://www.unsat2023.org/ \n

SUMMARY:GeoERA Concluding Conference & 125th Anniversary of the Geological Survey of Belgium
DESCRIPTION:GSB 125th Anniversary \nThe Geological Survey of Belgium\, now part of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences\, was established in December of 1896. Throughout that long history it has persistently been building expertise\, preserving knowledge\, and above all serving society. This was the stable foundation for what has proven to be a highly dynamic mission. In the early days\, our geologists were exploring the country to fill the ever growing needs of the largest of the mainland economies. Today\, 125 years later\, society has come full circle. Challenged by the consequences of our industrial history\, our geologists are now working on sustainable solutions. A story of how needs change\, while geology remains key. \nTime to celebrate\, proudly look back\, and confidently glance forward. We welcome you on the 18th of January. \nGeoERA Concluding Conference \nOn Wednesday 19th January\, we will be marking the end of the GeoERA project.  The GeoERA ERA-Net on “Establishing the European Geological Surveys Research Area to deliver a Geological Service for Europe” was established in 2017\, bringing together 47 national and regional Geological Survey Organisations from 32 European countries to collaborate in a joint geoscientific research programme\, the first of its kind in Europe. For more information on GeoERA\, please visit the GeoERA website. \nWith the projects now publishing their final results\, a Concluding Conference will be held to showcase the achievements and discuss the impacts this degree of pan-European collaboration by national scientific institutes can have on political\, scientific and social levels\, and how geoscientific knowledge and data can contribute towards the goals of the European Green Deal. \nThis event will hear from EU and national representatives on the importance of geoscientific knowledge\, data and information to policy and decision-making processes. Given that geology has no borders\, we will also discuss the needs for and potential role of a future Geological Service for Europe with a panel of distinguished speakers. This will be followed by a Tour of the Museum of Natural Sciences with dedicated exhibitions that will showcase the achievements and products of all GeoERA Projects’ results. \nTo book your place on these events\, please fill in the form. \nDining with Dinosaurs \nIn honour of the 125th Anniversary of the Geological Survey of Belgium and to mark the occasion of GeoERA’s conclusion\, an evening dinner will be held within the Dinosaur Gallery of the Museum of Natural Sciences. The opportunity to attend this prestigious event is open to all interested parties and will provide the opportunity to network with high-level attendees in the impressive surroundings of the Museum (attendees to include EU policy-makers\, Directors of European Geological Surveys\, leading experts in Earth science topics and key stakeholders from industry\, academia and international institutions such as the UN).  The cost for attending the dinner will be €85\, please register your intention to attend.

SUMMARY:Soil carbon sequestration: When does increased soil C storage yield net removal of greenhouse gases?
DESCRIPTION:Keen public interest in soil carbon sequestration will test the scientific community’s ability to deliver effective management practices and durable scientific concepts. The goal of this webinar series is to hear diverse perspectives on key technical questions that inform how to go about sequestering soil carbon in working lands. In Webinar 3 we will explore how practices that increase soil organic carbon impact emissions of nitrous oxide\, and ask whether storing more carbon is enough to reduce the net GHG impact of agriculture. We will hear case studies from France by Claire Chenu (INRAE) and the U.S. Midwest by Jane Johnson (USDA-ARS). This series is sponsored by the International Soil Carbon Network in partnership with AGU and the USDA Climate Hubs.

SUMMARY:12th International SedNet Conference
DESCRIPTION:The SedNet 2021 conference “Sediment Challenges and Opportunities due to Climate Change and Sustainable Development” will take place online from 29 June – 3 July 2021. \nSediments found in upland streams\, industrialised waterways\, busy coastal zones and offshore waters are characterized by a wide variety of sediment properties in dynamic and less dynamic areas. These areas are inherently interlinked as sediment is transported from catchment to the open sea. The natural flow of sediment from mountainous regions to the ocean is strongly impacted by anthropogenic activities along this journey in terms of both the quantity that is transported and the quality of transporting waters. Sediment distribution is not only impacted by direct human influence but also indirectly as a result of changing weather and climate patterns. A change in sediment dynamics leading to sediment starvation or sediment accumulation is often the concern of river basin and coastal managers who constantly need to adapt to these environmental variations. Often overlooked\, there may be direct and indirect effects of climate change on sediment quality\, too. More frequent flash floods may erode deeper and older\, more contaminated sediment layers and spread it onto flood plains. Increased UV radiation may change degradation of contaminants. Increased water temperatures will have an effect of contaminant transfer in the food chain. Little information is currently available to predict whether sediment managers will have to cope with greater or different quality problems in future due to the climatic changes.
