SUMMARY:The Clean Energy Transition: From Vision to Reality
DESCRIPTION:Decarbonising our economy and avoiding the worst effects of climate change requires us to zero greenhouse gases emissions at the latest by 2050. Energy is a key piece in addressing this challenge as it represents about 75% of anthropogenic emissions. However\, it becomes increasingly evident that the technical challenges associated with the transition\, even if essential\, are one factor of a broader societal transformation. If we are serious about becoming a climate-neutral society\, a comprehensive strategy for a fair and sustainable Clean Energy Transition is needed. \nThis goal will also not be reached without international collaboration and partnership across the globe. Europe has historically been a leader in climate diplomacy and is the first economic bloc to put a concrete roadmap on the table. The undertaking is ambitious; in the words of EU Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni presenting the ‘Fit-for-55’ policy package\, “early movers have advantages\, but they also face risks”. \nThe challenges connected to the Clean Energy Transition are societal in nature and\, consequently\, the potential solutions must be designed in a cross-sectoral and interdisciplinary way. As recently alerted by the UN IPCC\, time is running out to find solutions that will keep average temperatures from increasing too far beyond 1.5°C compared to pre-industrial levels. Never the emergency for driving the Clean Energy Transition effectively and decisively at the EU and global levels has been greater. \nThe EERA White Paper on the Clean Energy Transition\, which will be officially released at the occasion of this conference\, provides EERA’s unique approach to these challenges\, highlighting a set of key policy measures presented as preconditions to successfully and timely drive the Clean Energy Transition and make it a reality for EU citizens.

SUMMARY:EFG Webinar: New horizons for geotechnics – the story of Zero Terrain
DESCRIPTION:On 14 October 2021\, the European Federation of Geologists (EFG) is organising the webinar ‘New horizons for geotechnics – the story of Zero Terrain‘. The event is scheduled for 5 – 6 PM CEST (Brussels time). \nThe transition to renewable energy is inevitable and\, geotechnics has an important role to play in this transformation. In developing the Zero Terrain storage concept\, Energiasalv (Estonia) has come to understand that successful energy technologies must meet the following three criteria simultaneously: \n\nthe smallest possible use of environment and materials;\nlow costs and high conversion efficiency; and finally\nsector coupling and new business models.\n\nPlease find more information and registration at the following link: https://bit.ly/3iA3sQZ

SUMMARY:Is green hydrogen really carbon-neutral?
DESCRIPTION:As the EU moves away from its dependency on fossil fuel\, hydrogen is expected to play a key role in our future energy systems\, and for delivering on the aim set out in the European Green Deal of achieving carbon-neutrality in the EU by 2050. \nThe cleanest option of hydrogen is renewable hydrogen\, often referred to as green hydrogen. It is created by putting renewable energy sources like wind and solar power through an electrolyser\, and its only by-product is water. Accordingly\, its production is almost emission-free\, which is why it is the form of production generating the most interest – from policymakers\, scientists and investors. \nJoin this EURACTIV Virtual Conference to discuss what we know and what we don’t yet know about green hydrogen\, and when and how to use hydrogen most effectively to decarbonise Europe.

SUMMARY:vGeofluids21 Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Significant geological resources were formed due to the interaction among fluids of different nature and the rocks forming the Earth crust. Research on geofluids has been evolving since the 1980s accompanied by a better understanding of Earth System Science in sustainable development. Since then\, fluid geology holds increasing attention compare to traditional solid geology. The fluid-rock-related processes\, the geofluids and their interrelationship can be understood using the dynamic system approach\, which involves the fluid flow system’s concept and the geologic agency of fluids in the lithosphere. \nGeofluid Symposium provides a platform for academic exchange between geofluid and groundwater researchers: understand each other’s research context\, research trends and establish a more common language. The Symposium’s declared objective is to bring together scientists\, professionals\, and stakeholders to share and discuss all kinds of topics in geofluids and groundwater to understand better geothermal energy\, hydrocarbon\, geogenic contamination and hydrothermal mineral resources. Special emphasis will be placed on geofluid assessment tools and methods\, harmonized exploration\, geofluid and groundwater utilization. We\, therefore\, welcome researchers in all aspects of geofluids’ research. The greater the diversity of interests\, the more significant will be the result. \nThe ENeRAG H2020 project organizes the symposium\, together with the Eötvös Loránd University\, the József and Erzsébet Tóth Endowed Hydrogeology Chair Foundation\, the Regional Groundwater Flow\, the Managed Aquifer Recharge Commissions and the Hungarian National Chapter of the International Association of Hydrogeologists.

SUMMARY:All things energy forum
DESCRIPTION:The world is facing an unprecedented situation\, unlike anything after WWII. The key characteristics are Uncertainty and the convergence of six mega phenomena: \n\nA Sustained Pandemic: Covid does not seem to abate\, 3rd wave\, British variant\, problematic availability of vaccines\nEconomics: Huge stimulus sums are being spent but still a bleak forecast for a recovery\, outside China\nEnergy trade: an oil price plunge\, to even negative territories\, is now followed by uncertainty in demand and volatility in oil/gas prices\nInternational politics: US/China trade war\, Russian political frictions with EU\, seeking a balance between energy security\, economic and environmental goals in times of energy transition\nEnergy/Environment policies: EU–Green Deal proceeding at full speed\, but at the same time China/Asia are ordering new coal plants\nDisruptive technologies and emerging challenges: cybersecurity issues arise from increasing digitalization (hacking\, terrorism & insurance coverage)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs a result\,  some energy subsectors are favored by low-emissions policies: Renewable Energy Sources\, Hydrogen of the ‘green’ variety. Nuclear should be favored\, due to no carbon emissions\, but safety and cost problems exist. Other energy subsectors are challenged: coal\, tar sands\, oil especially upstream\, shale oil. Natural gas is a borderline energy subsector — a transition fuel. \nWhen the Covid-19 factor is superposed\, even the subsectors that are  theoretically favored are faced with problems of low demand and supply chain\, as well as administrative delays and obstacles to Foreign Direct Investments from specific countries. \nIndirectly but increasingly strongly\, the energy sector is also affected by the changing attitudes of banks and other financial institutions\, insurance companies\, hedge funds\, NGOs etc that are becoming more active in the direction of decarbonization. \nIn this framework\, the decisions of energy producing or consuming companies\, are hugely affected. Such decisions Include health and safety\, sales\, operations\, finance/cashflow\, risk management/communications\, CSR\, planning/strategy/energy transition.

SUMMARY:EU Green Week 2021
DESCRIPTION:Pollution affects everybody – through the air we breathe\, the water we drink or the land we grow our food on. It is the largest environmental cause of multiple mental and physical diseases\, and of premature deaths\, especially among children\, people with certain medical conditions and the elderly. But pollution does not affect everybody equally. People who live in more deprived areas very often live close to contaminated sites or in areas where there is a very high flow of traffic. Pollution is also one of the main reasons for the loss of biodiversity. It reduces the ability of ecosystems to provide services such as carbon sequestration and decontamination. \nBut it can be prevented. The EU Action Plan toward a Zero Pollution Ambition is a key action of the European Green Deal scheduled for spring 2021. It will help to create a toxic-free environment across the EU by better monitoring and\, reporting\, and by preventing and remedying pollution from air\, water\, soil\, and consumer products.\nIt will also support the post-COVID 19 recovery by helping to rebuild a more sustainable EU economy\, creating job opportunities and reducing social inequalities. The European Green Week 2021 will be dedicated to the ‘zero pollution ambition’. It will also look at other relevant European Green Deal initiatives\, such the climate initiatives\, the upcoming Chemicals Strategy\, as well as initiatives in the field of energy\, industry\, mobility\, agriculture\, fisheries\, health and biodiversity. \nEU Green Week 2021 will be an opportunity to engage with all stakeholders and interested citizens on how we can work together to make the ambition for a zero pollution and toxic-free environment a reality.

SUMMARY:EFG Webinar: Natural Hydrogen Resources
DESCRIPTION:On 15 April 2021\, EFG is organising the webinar ‘Natural Hydrogen Resources’.\n\n\n\nHydrogen has been present in the industry as a raw material for a long time and\, except for rocket takeoffs\, its energetic capacity was rarely used\, at least for the second part of the 20th century. The landscape is changing since green fuels are looked for to decrease the CO2 impact of mobility and to improve the air quality of cities. The use of H2 as fuel is growing and the demand for green hydrogen\, not manufactured from hydrocarbons\, is following the same trend. In that frame\, the production of native H2 appears as a promising alternative and exploration is starting in various countries after the fortuitous discoveries of accumulations in different places and the first years of production in Mali. It should be noted that some authors already informed the scientific community some time ago on this resource without receiving any attention from the extractive industry\, but times are changing. \nEven if some questions remain open\, the geological context that allows H2 generation in the subsurface is starting to be known and natural H2 has already been found in three geological tectonic settings: \n\n\nextension zones (Mid Oceanic Ridge\, Iceland\, and African Rift); \n\n\n\n\ncompression zones involving ophiolitic nappes (Oman\, Philippines\, New Caledonia); and \n\n\n\n\nstable intracratonic basins above Archean to Proterozoic basement (Brazil\, Russia\, USA\, Australia\, Mali). \n\n\nIn this webinar\, we will present a state of the art on the knowledge and open questions about this new resource. \nIsabelle Moretti\, senior researcher at the University of Pau and the Adour Region (UPPA)\, will be the presenter. She is a scientist with a master’s in mathematics and a PhD in earth science from the Paris XI University. Moretti was appointed as visiting scientist at Cornell University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She began her career in 1987 at the French Petroleum Institute (IFPen) where she worked on various projects in France and abroad. She worked in fundamental research but also developed professional software. She has interspersed her research and appraisal activities for industry (TOTAL\, CEPSA\, YPFB) with work for governmental entities (IRD\, CNRS\, ANR\, CEE\, Ancre). She is the author of more than 130 scientific papers and has given courses in various universities worldwide. She has been also the president of GERG (European Gas Research organization)\, a member of the board of Ineris (French National Institute for Industrial Environment and Risks) and BRGM (French Geological Survey) and an expert in various commissions. She is now leading a team dedicated to natural hydrogen at the UPPA where she is working on different case studies in Brazil\, Australia\, Iceland and the Afar region. \nThe webinar is scheduled for 5 – 6 PM CEST. \n\nPlease register for the free event here.
