SUMMARY:Mary Anning and other inspiring female geoscientists
DESCRIPTION:Some pioneer women paved the way in geology. However\, they faced challenges for their voices to be heard and for their remarkable work to be recognised at their time. \nWe are inviting the authors of two fascinating books that pay tribute to these pioneer geologists: GEAS – Women Who Study the Earth and The Fossil Woman. A Life of Mary Anning. ENGIE coordinator Eva Hartai will be the host of the session. \nGEAS is an illustrated booklet featuring 12 pioneer women geoscientists. The publication is a travel through time giving voice to women geologists of different times\, historical contexts and nationalities. They all have something in common: they made an indelible mark on the strata of our knowledge. Spanish geologists Rosa María Mateos and Ana Ruíz Constan are the authors of this book and these 12 women were really an inspiration to them. The artist Nívola Uyá is the author of the beautiful illustrations of GEAS. \nThe remarkable palaeontologist Mary Anning is one of the women showcased in the book and she leads us to Tom Sharpe‘s biography The Fossil Woman. A Life of Mary Anning. Mary Anning was born in Lyme Regis in England in 1799 and was taught to look for fossils by her father who sold them to tourists. After he died\, the family continued to sell fossils and discovered what were thought to be fossil crocodiles. By 1820\, Mary was running the business and her discovery of a new fossil reptile\, Plesiosaurus\, in 1823 made her famous. Mary’s fossils and her expertise attracted scientists from across Britain\, Europe and even from North America to Lyme Regis to buy specimens from her for their collections and museums. She was more than just a collector and seller of fossils; she observed where and how they occurred and experimented with living animals to help her identify her finds. She was a professional palaeontologist. However\, at that time women were not admitted to most scientific societies\, so despite her fame and expertise\, and the respect in which she was held by her scientist friends\, Mary was unable to take part in the meetings where her discoveries were discussed. DESCRIPTION:OxGVC 2022 will take place from June 6-9\, with keynotes\, talks\, and flash talks being presented each day between 2pm and 5pm UK time (BST = UTC+1). This timing is aimed at maximising international attendance. For the first time there will also be an opportunity for poster presentations. OxGVC is all about geoheritage workers being able to meet online – the presentations will therefore be supplemented by an online space for attendees to meet\, discuss\, debate\, and socialise. \nThis conference is open to all who are interested in geoheritage\, including scientists\, students\, professionals\, policy-makers\, and managers. We welcome contributions from all fields of geoheritage including geoconservation\, management\, classification\, geodiversity\, legislation\, geoparks\, geotourism\, geoheritage and cultural heritage\, and interpretation. Geoheritage is an inherently interdisciplinary field: we also encourage those from affiliated fields who have something to contribute to attend and submit an abstract. SUMMARY:2022 Forum on Responsible Mineral Supply Chains
DESCRIPTION:The 15th Forum on Responsible Mineral Supply Chains will be held virtually on 2-6 May 2022 and will bring together representatives from government\, business\, and civil society. Plenary sessions will take place at 11h30-12h45 and 13h30-14.45 CET\, while partner-led sessions will take place in the mornings and afternoons. \nThe Forum will provide the opportunity to review and discuss the implementation of the OECD Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Supply Chains of Minerals from Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas and other initiatives to enable responsible mineral production and sourcing. This year\, the Forum will devote particular attention to critical minerals and the role of supply chain due diligence in enabling critical minerals to contribute to a just low-carbon transition. The Forum will also feature sessions on market access for artisanal and small-scale mining and the coherence of due diligence systems. Other sessions will feature technical discussions on using monitoring and evaluation to identify key systemic blockages to due diligence\, using supply chain due diligence to address emerging risks\, and those with growing awareness like environmental impacts in mining\, and identifying conflict-affected and high-risk areas.

DESCRIPTION:This April 4th and 5th\, People and Mining in a collaboration with Ore Deposits Hub and the Social Practice Forum are organising a new virtual workshop called Practices to People: Introduction to Community Communication for Exploration Geologists. The workshop aims to improve community communication awareness and education of exploration geologists\, especially those in their early career. \nThe workshop will run over two half days on the 4th & 5th April (16:00–19:30 Brussels / 10:00–13:30 Toronto); community communication experts and experienced exploration geologists will teach the practical essentials of successful community communication as an exploration geo. Attendees can then practice these skills in scenarios based on real-world exploration scenarios from around the world in the Communication Challenge!
