SUMMARY:Energy Transition Discussion Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Energy Transition Discussion Meeting is a 2-day Hybrid conference which aims to identify what Geoscience needs to do now to meet the net zero targets in a fair and sustainable way – to support policy\, business and innovation\, and in parallel develop new scientific and engineering knowledge and solutions. It will connect and engage the Geoscience community with key stakeholders in society\, government and beyond\, and through multi-way discussion\, the event will both tease out and integrate geoscience\, policy\, sustainable development and the Energy Transition. In doing so\, it will identify new opportunities for Geoscience research\, development and impact\, and critically ask what the Geosciences need to do now for a sustainable transition. \nThe Geological Society is hosting this hybrid event on 26th and 27th April 2022 as part of their Energy Transition theme.  The event will consist of invited speaker sessions and panel discussions\, with the aim of addressing what Geoscience needs to do now for a sustainable transition to net zero. \nThe organisers welcome and encourage attendance in person at Burlington House\, where in addition to the conference itself\, there will be a range of networking opportunities. \nFor those who cannot make it in person\, the online is event is free.

SUMMARY:All things energy forum
DESCRIPTION:The world is facing an unprecedented situation\, unlike anything after WWII. The key characteristics are Uncertainty and the convergence of six mega phenomena: \n\nA Sustained Pandemic: Covid does not seem to abate\, 3rd wave\, British variant\, problematic availability of vaccines\nEconomics: Huge stimulus sums are being spent but still a bleak forecast for a recovery\, outside China\nEnergy trade: an oil price plunge\, to even negative territories\, is now followed by uncertainty in demand and volatility in oil/gas prices\nInternational politics: US/China trade war\, Russian political frictions with EU\, seeking a balance between energy security\, economic and environmental goals in times of energy transition\nEnergy/Environment policies: EU–Green Deal proceeding at full speed\, but at the same time China/Asia are ordering new coal plants\nDisruptive technologies and emerging challenges: cybersecurity issues arise from increasing digitalization (hacking\, terrorism & insurance coverage)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs a result\,  some energy subsectors are favored by low-emissions policies: Renewable Energy Sources\, Hydrogen of the ‘green’ variety. Nuclear should be favored\, due to no carbon emissions\, but safety and cost problems exist. Other energy subsectors are challenged: coal\, tar sands\, oil especially upstream\, shale oil. Natural gas is a borderline energy subsector — a transition fuel. \nWhen the Covid-19 factor is superposed\, even the subsectors that are  theoretically favored are faced with problems of low demand and supply chain\, as well as administrative delays and obstacles to Foreign Direct Investments from specific countries. \nIndirectly but increasingly strongly\, the energy sector is also affected by the changing attitudes of banks and other financial institutions\, insurance companies\, hedge funds\, NGOs etc that are becoming more active in the direction of decarbonization. \nIn this framework\, the decisions of energy producing or consuming companies\, are hugely affected. Such decisions Include health and safety\, sales\, operations\, finance/cashflow\, risk management/communications\, CSR\, planning/strategy/energy transition.

SUMMARY:Core Values: the Role of Core in 21st Century Reservoir Characterisation
DESCRIPTION:Core has traditionally played a key role in the characterisation of conventional and unconventional hydrocarbon reservoirs\, from exploration to mature production. It is the only means by which to observe and make measurements on actual reservoir rock. However\, the recent oil industry downturn has driven many to question the value of taking core\, due to the associated increased costs and potential risks to well operations. In tandem\, advances in other reservoir visualisation techniques\, such as seismic and borehole imaging\, have been used to give weight to the contention that coring is an increasingly redundant means of characterising reservoirs. \nThrough four main themes this 3-day conference will aim to redress the balance in this debate by exploring the role core can\, or should\, play in the 21st century exploration to production cycle: \n• Is core critical to sound commercial decision making? \n• What are the challenges and benefits of integrating core-derived understanding across the geological\, petrophysical and engineering spectrum? \n• Integration of traditional core characterisation methods with new core\, well and reservoir visualisation and mapping technologies – is the sum greater than its parts? \n• How can the extensive network of global legacy core collections best be utilised to maximise their business and research worth? \nDedicated sessions will allow delegates to view core that has been central to addressing many key reservoir issues\, under the direct guidance of those responsible for meeting such challenges. Speakers are thus invited to bring core to illustrate their presentation\, and indicate if this is of interest when submitting an abstract.

SUMMARY:The role of gas in Europe’s future energy mix and the transition to zero carbon of Europe’s power sector
DESCRIPTION:The lower carbon intensity of natural gas – which produces half the emissions of coal when burned in power plants – and the emergence of new technologies like hydrogen are setting gas apart from other fossil fuels in the clean energy transition.  \nCan gas\, whether renewable or abated through CCS\, be the optimal complementary energy technology to balance intermittent renewable electricity such as wind and solar in the coming decades? And how can we ensure enough funding for the different technologies for decarbonisation?   \nJoin this EURACTIV debate to discuss the role of gas and gas infrastructure in Europe’s future energy mix and the transition to zero carbon of Europe’s power sector. \nhttps://events.euractiv.com/event/info/the-role-of-gas-in-europes-future-energy-mix-and-the-transition-to-zero-carbon-of-europes-power-sector

SUMMARY:Clean Gas Technologies: What opportunities for the EU?
DESCRIPTION:According to the European Commission\, renewable and low-carbon hydrogen is a key building block towards a climate-neutral and zero-pollution economy in 2050\, by replacing most fossil fuels and feedstock. It can contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions ahead of 2030 and to a green recovery of the EU economy. \nGas advocates argue that biomethane\, green hydrogen and synthetic gases should be seen as a crucial part of the EU’s long-term energy security as they are renewable and easily transported and stored. \nJoin this EURACTIV Virtual Conference to discuss what are the opportunities for the EU in regards to clean gas technologies\, how quickly can these technologies be rolled out\, and at what cost? \nConfirmed speakers: \n\nNicolás Gonzáles Casares MEP\, Member ITRE Committee\, European Parliament\nAlix Chambris\, Vice President Group Public Affairs and Sustainability\, Viessmann\nLuca Giansanti\, SVP\, Head of European Government Affairs\, ENI\nBenjamin Denis\, Senior Policy Adviser\, IndustriAll Europe

SUMMARY:FutureGeo 2.0
DESCRIPTION:The Future of GeoScience is Now. \nThis free\, virtual and first-of-its-kind networking event\, brought to you in association with Digital Leaders\, will bring together the geo-community into a common space where all involved can present\, share and understand differing perspectives\, ideas and goals\, helping shape the Future of GeoScience. \nFollowing the success of the FutureGeo Summit in June\, which over 6000 people viewed or interacted with\, this next event focuses in on the key challenges and themes that have been discussed\, debated and presented over the past few months as the #FutureGeo conversation has grown louder. \nThe #DigiLounge is a virtual platform. You only need a web browser (Firefox\, Chrome and Safari) to access and there are no downloads involved. A checklist for the event will be circulated in the lead up to the 29th September. \nThe event mimics a traditional networking event\, however\, it minimises travel and associated costs\, promoting inclusivity and breaking down geographic borders as you connect with not just people from the UK but from all four corners of the world. \nThe #DigiLounge is a virtual space for up to 800 people sat cabaret-style in tables of 6 with a main stage. Each floor has 10 tables\, and caters for up to 100 people. Once the event starts you will be dropped into a table on a floor\, in the table you will be able to see (via webcam) all other people on your table\, as well as a business card style profile which you can fill in upon entry to the event. You do not need to have your camera on\, you can connect without being face to face and all you will need are a microphone and audio connected to talk to others. There are chat functions built in to the platform which allow you to chat with everyone in the event\, on your floor\, on your table or privately to individuals or groups. In short\, it is all about real\, human connection. \nThe idea for FutureGeo 2.0 is to take the 8 floors and apply a theme to each of them. As noted above\, these themes have been drawn from the first FutureGeo Summit and ongoing projects/research and conversations occurring throughout the Geo-Community. \nDuring the event\, all in attendance will be able to move between up to 8 floors which are themed as follows: \n\nDiversity\, Difference and Equality in GeoScience\nInclusivity and Opportunity in GeoScience\nGeoScience through Geography and STEM – KS3 and KS4\nThe Decline in University Student Enrolment\nUtilising Emerging Technologies in GeoScience\nPromoting Cross-Disciplinary GeoScience Degrees/Careers\nThe Energy and Materials Transition\nWater\nCommunicating GeoScience\n\nOn a floor\, you will be able to join tables and discuss\, debate and explore opportunities in these themes\, networking with open and like-minded individuals who share in your passions and experiences. You will be encouraged to explore themes that are outside their comfort zone to share in differing perspectives. This will be a truly global summit with attendees from all four corners of the globe so it will be an amazing opportunity to connect with people you would never normally connect with. \nThe running order for the event has been designed to keep it very simple. It is as follows: \n09:30am: The Event opens to registered delegates. They will be dropped into a table somewhere in the event. \n09:30-09:40am: Intros and basic tutorials on how to use the functionality in the platform and navigate around the floors and tables. \n09:40am – 09:50am: Introductions from selected theme champions and explanation of how the next hour will work. \n09:50am – 11am: Networking session\, allowing delegates to move freely between tables and floors exploring the different themes and engaging around common talking points. \n11am – 11:15am: Selected theme champions will be asked to ‘come up to the front’ and present on their key takeaways. \n11:15am – 11:20am: Introduction to speed networking round. \n11:20am – 11.50am: Three 10 minute rounds of speed networking. A bell and countdown will be displayed on the screen and once the time is up\, attendees will be asked to move to another table. \nNot only is this an opportunity for attendees to connect with the wider geo-community\, it will also be a chance to hone our ability to promote our individual value and role in society. A question to explore in the lead up to the event is: What makes you\, your experiences\, your passion and your skills valuable in moving society to a more sustainable\, greener\, socially just and resilient future? This question will be posed during the speed networking rounds. \n11:50am – 12pm: Final and closing statements from a selection of champions before the event closes. \nThere a few more surprises I am trying to work on to make FutureGeo a truly unique\, rewarding and engaging event and one that hopefully can be repeated regularly to develop a truly connected and empowered geo-community. \n  \nSpaces are limited so register your interest now to ensure you do not miss out! \nPlease us the #FutureGeo so we can capture the conversation before\, during and after the event! \nIf you would like to be invovled\, please contact Tom Backhouse by emailing: tom@terrafirmaidc.co.uk.
