SUMMARY:Science and Policy Forum for the Implementation of Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction
DESCRIPTION:The new paradigm of risk-sensitive and risk-informed development triggered by the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030 requires sound foundations in knowledge and understanding of risk and resilience to contribute to the attainment of the Paris Climate Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals. The Sendai Framework\, in adopting ‘Understanding Disaster Risk’ as its first priority for action\, emphasizes the importance of science and technology in its implementation. It calls for enhanced scientific and technical work on disaster risk reduction in the context of sustainable development and climate change and highlights the need to prioritize the development and dissemination of science-based risk knowledge\, technology and innovation.\nBut it is not just about understanding risk – it is also about building a more integrated science basis which brings together science disciplines from all aspects of the 2030 Agenda\, and most importantly ensuring science is used by policy-makers in support of risk-informed decisions and investment.\nThe Global Platform with its focus on the resilience dividend is a key opportunity to highlight the role of science\, showcase its opportunities and commitment and encourage dialogue with Governments\, private sector representatives and other practitioners.\nScience and policy discussions at the Global Platform will be linked and mutually benefitting from the Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD) and STI Forum\, both under the leadership of ECOSOC and taking place from 13-17 May 2019 in Geneva and New York respectively.\nThe results of the discussions will also feed into the High-Level Political Forum\, High-level Dialogue on Financing for Development and UN Climate Summit under the auspices of the UN General Assembly in September\, and other critical lobal and regional events with the aim to link the global 2030 agreements and their respective scientific basis closer together.

SUMMARY:Tech4Dev 2018 International Conference
DESCRIPTION:The Tech4Dev Conference is the biennial flagship event of the UNESCO Chair in Technologies for Development hosted by CODEV at EPFL. The Conference focuses on the potential of technology solutions to advance inclusive social and economic development in the Global South. Tech4Dev 2018 puts the challenges and the potential of the Global South in the center of discussions reflected by its title Voices of the Global South. Indeed\, even though the Sustainable Development Goals apply globally\, the needs in terms of access to health and financial services\, functioning education systems and sustainable urban and natural ecosystems are undeniably more significant in the Global South. In this perspective\, it is crucial to listen to and support stakeholders from the regions who are facing these challenges.

DESCRIPTION:10 years after the 2008 Movri Men Earthquake; An earthquake increasing our knowledge for the deformation in a foreland area\nThis workshop is the 2nd of a recent series of scientific meetings organized by the Tectonics Committee of the Geological Society of Greece aiming to shed light on tectonic processes related with the active deformation in different levels of the crust of western Greece such as landscape evolution\, seismicity\, near field geodesy and their significance for hazard assessment and oil prospect. The workshop will provide an opportunity for researchers and practitioners to present their latest work on evaluating the impact of the active deformation on the society as well as to highlight innovative applications and research outcomes. Students of geology or related disciplines are welcome to the workshop.\nWe invite original or review contributions on structural geology\, geomorphology\, seismicity\, crustal deformation (GNSS and InSAR)\, natural hazards that discuss the topics in term of concepts\, state of the art\, research\, standards\, running experiments\, and applications in similar areas. The topics include (but are not limited to):\n- Structural Geology and Geomorphology of NW Peloponnese\n- Seismology and near surface tectonic geodesy\n- GNSS-InSAR\n- Geomorphological evolution in slowly deformed areas\n– Principles\, theories\, and models \nAfter the end of the workshop a short field trip in the study area is planned. Due to limited space for the field trip\, the interested colleagues are kindly requested to send an email for their participation to Prof. Ioannis Koukouvelas.\nInformation/Contact: Ioannis Koukouvelas (iannis@upatras.gr)

SUMMARY:6th International Conference on Flood and Urban Water Management
DESCRIPTION:FRIAR 2018 is the sixth Conference of this successful series. Flooding is a global phenomenon that claims numerous lives worldwide each year. When flooding occurs in urban areas\, it can cause substantial damage to property as well as threaten human life. In addition\, many more people must endure the homelessness\, upset and disruption that are left in the wake of floods. The increased frequency of flooding in the last few years\, coupled with climate change predictions and urban development\, suggest that these impacts are set to worsen in the future. How we respond and importantly\, adapt to these challenges is key to developing our long-term resilience at the property\, community and city scale.

SUMMARY:World Symposium on Climate Change Communication
DESCRIPTION:The symposium will be in Graz\, Austria. \nThe complexity of climate change means that appropriate approaches\, methods and tools to communicate the problem and its various ramifications are urgently needed. Article 6 of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) clearly addresses the importance of climate change communication to the general public and reiterates the need to engaging the various stakeholders in debating this issue. It also highlights the responsibility of the UNFCCC signatories countries to develop and implement educational and public awareness programmes on climate change and its effects\, to ensure public access to information\, and to promote public participation in addressing communication issues.
