DESCRIPTION:Geoscience remains essential to enabling safe\, cost‑effective design\, installation and operation of offshore wind foundations and subsea cables. As the industry moves toward larger turbines\, deeper waters and more complex sites\, the need for integrated geological\, geophysical and geotechnical insight continues to grow. SUMMARY:What Makes a Geoscience Model Useful?
DESCRIPTION:Modelling is ubiquitous in geoscience\, from conceptual models used to summarise qualitative outcrop interpretations\, to experimental analogue models and complex numerical process models used to advance our understanding fundamental processes. Geoscience models of all types are widely used for prediction across all areas of geoscience\, for example in natural hazard prediction\, in subsurface prediction in the exploration\, appraisal and production of natural resources\, and increasingly in sequestration and energy storage.  In all cases\, the question applies: what makes a geoscience model useful? Answering this question is important because it requires that we fully understand and optimise the modelling process to best develop and encapsulate robust understanding and therefore make the best possible predictions. \nAims of Meeting \nThe meeting aims to use oral\, poster and keynote presentations combined with discussion and debate sessions to progress answers to the following questions: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat makes a geoscience model useful?\nHow should conceptual\, analogue and numerical models be used and integrated in geoscience?\nHow much do conceptual models inform\, influence or limit data collection and interpretation?\nDo digital outcrop models have significant untapped potential\, for example to improve existing conceptual models?\nWhat does it mean for a model to be predictive?\nHow do you find the simplest model or models able to answer the question being asked?\nAre simple process models as useful as complex process models?\nDo we need metrics for model complexity?\nWhat new process models remain to be developed\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPotential outputs of the conference include a white paper on best practice in geoscience modelling. This could perhaps form an excellent starting point for a GSL Special Publication presenting papers building on the themes presented during the conference \nWho is this conference aimed at? \nThis conference will be useful to any geoscientist who uses models\, from conceptual and digital outcrop models\, to models that integrate multiple forms of data\, to full-physics analogue and numerical process models. It will be useful if you want to better understand where the boundary between models and data lies\, how best to develop and/or apply models for robust prediction\, and how further development of models can advance geoscience. SUMMARY:Deepwater Sandstones: New paradigms\, new frontiers: Energy Group
DESCRIPTION:It has been 30 years since the publication of GSL Special Publication No. 94 ‘Characterisation of Deep Marine Clastic Systems’. At that time the move to explore and develop deepwater reservoirs in present day deepwater settings was beginning to gather pace\, but many significant deepwater discoveries were still to be made. Prevailing paradigms about process and product were changing as workers in the field focused on developing an understanding that a wider range of processes beyond classical turbidity currents were responsible for depositing and shaping deepwater sandstone deposits. \n\n\nThirty years later depositional models and process understanding has evolved significantly\, leading to the successful deployment of concepts that have driven exploration to integrate new ideas including the role of mass-transport complexes and a wider range of particulate sediment gravity flow processes. A much deeper understanding of post-depositional remobilisation and it’s role in shaping subsurface architectures and influencing fluid flow and petroleum recovery has also emerged. Vast deep-water discoveries have been developed and now accumulated significant production history\, providing a wealth of data sets that have dramatically improved characterisation of deep-water systems. Tertiary reservoirs have been extensively developed\, and today the focus has shifted decisively to older Cretaceous systems around the circum Southern Atlantic margins. Continued advances in geophysical technology\, seismic data acquisition and processing\, including ‘AI/ML’ driven interpretation tools\, have contributed to our ability to visualise\, map and characterise these systems in the subsurface. \n\n\nThirty years on from this key Society publication new paradigms and frontiers are being explored in the field. Whether it is for a tunnel\, quarry\, cavern\, slope\, or repository\, the challenge remains the same: building a geological model that accurately reflects reality\, both in three dimensions and over time. This fourth dimension—time—is critical. It underpins geological events and processes\, allowing us to better understand structural evolution\, fault types\, jointing\, weathering\, alteration\, and rock fabric development. \nBut how often do our models\, and the tools we use\, really reflect this complexity? \nOver the last half-century\, engineering practice has often reduced geological richness to simplified inputs—rock mass classifications\, homogenized domains\, and analytical solutions assuming uniform\, isotropic conditions. While these tools are convenient\, they can obscure or misrepresent the true behavior of the rock mass – especially when it is discrete\, inhomogeneous\, anisotropic\, or evolving. \nThis workshop is designed to bring geology and engineering back into alignment. We will begin with a concise review of the principles of 4D geological modeling\, including how to handle uncertainty (both parametric and discrete) in real-world projects. We will then explore the limitations of common engineering analysis approaches—including classification-based inputs\, overly simplified tunnel profiles\, and assumptions of material uniformity—when applied to complex geological conditions. His activities include developing and validating design methods for soil improvement\, field testing of innovative construction methods and aging infrastructure\, using waste as a building material\, consultancy and construction supervision. As a visiting scholar\, he lectures on organic soils at the Geoengineering section of Delft University of Technology.\nSanneke van Asselen is a physical geographer with a keen interest in topics related to land subsidence in soft-soil organic sequences\, delta structure and evolution\, and (fluvial) geomorphology. Recent research focuses on quantifying and monitoring land subsidence due to peat compaction and oxidation in Holocene delta sequences. Her PhD research investigated how peat compaction influences delta development and fluvial morphology.\nCor Zwanenburg is an expert in soft soil engineering. His focus is on soft soil problems associated with slopes and landfills\, such as stability\, settlement\, consolidation\, and creep. Areas of special interest are the assessment of parameters through laboratory tests or field measurements\, and their relationship to calculation techniques. Between 2001 and 2005\, he obtained his doctorate from Delft University of Technology with a dissertation on the consolidation behaviour of peat.\n\nOVERVIEW: \nPeat and organic soils are present in the shallow subsurface of many deltas in the world. \nHigh compressibility\, low strength and susceptibility to oxidation pose challenges to infrastructure and housing. If these challenges are not properly understood and addressed the cost to society can be huge. Peat and organic soils are not “textbook” soils in terms of their behaviour and reaction to natural and man-induced changes. The heterogeneity of the deposits poses challenges to site characterisation methods\, requiring specific techniques. This workshop will familiarise the participants with characterisation\, behaviour and challenges of peat and organic soils\, adopting a lessons-learned approach from the Netherlands. \nTARGET AUDIENCE: \nStudents\, researchers\, geologists\, engineering geologists\, geotechnical engineers. SUMMARY:World Conference on Sampling and Blending (WCSB12)
DESCRIPTION:The WCSB12 theme is Sampling for a Sustainable World which aims to provide discussions on relevant issues across mining and minerals; raw materials and products; food and feed; medicine and pharma; recycling; and the environment. WCSB12 will seek to highlight as many fields as possible where proper sampling is performed in the service of sustainable science\, technology and industry\, the circular economy\, and mitigation of climate change. \nRepresentative sampling practice based on the Theory of Sampling (TOS) is key to many industrial applications. Efficient use of the Earths resources\, in its widest sense\, is a basis for developing sustainability in the context of UN Sustainable Development Goals SDG 12 and 13. \nWCSB12 will comprise Keynote presentations across key sampling applications\, supported by regular contributions. Pre- and/or post-conference workshops may be organised. \nWith thanks to the International Pierre Gy Sampling Association (IPGSA) \nAims of the Conference \nWCSB12 aims to bring together the diverse international sampling community to present and debate concepts and ideas for a standardised approach to sampling embodied in TOS.
