SUMMARY:Is China taking control of African minerals? Geopolitics and raw materials
DESCRIPTION:Chinese companies are far from taking control over African or global mining. In 2018\, they control less than 7 % of total African mine production. Chinese investments in African mining of non-fuel minerals between 1995 and 2018 have contributed to production growth but it has also increased Chinese control over African mineral and metal production. There is evidence pointing to a continued Chinese expansion in African minerals and metals but at a slower pace than in the past decade. Through a detailed analysis of every mine\, fully or partially controlled by Chinese interest in Africa and all other parts of the world the paper also measures total Chinese control over global mine production to be around 3 % of the total value. \nMagnus Ericsson\, is a veteran observer and analyst of global mining his interests going back to the early 1970s. He is a consulting professor of mineral economics at Luleå University of Technology\, Sweden since 2009. Magnus’ key qualifications lie within the areas where mineral economics; mineral policy/strategy; mineral legislation and taxation cross. He has extensive experiences in investment promotion\, mineral policy formulation including taxation and legislative issues and their implementation\, institutional organization\, stock exchange regulations for mining companies and he regularly performs analyses of mineral industries and their competitiveness. Magnus has a wide network in China having visited the country regularly since early 2000s. \nThe participation is free\, but registration is required\, through the following registration form until 31 May 2021: \nhttps://forms.gle/7UFLixBt9Q8Gvpgc7

SUMMARY:Global Roundtable on Extractive Industries: Transforming the Sector into an Engine for Sustainable Development
DESCRIPTION:Starting with the industrial revolution\, our global economic system has been underpinned by the extraction of natural resources – notably fossil fuels – which accelerated the development trajectories of many advanced economies. Extractive industries can generate significant revenue for producing countries\, creating major opportunities for growth for resource-rich countries. Yet extractive industries have also been mired by economic\, social and environmental problems. These challenges have been further compounded by COVID-19\, which led to rising debt burdens\, constrained fiscal environments\, and plummeting commodity prices\, which particularly affected both mining\, oil and gas in early 2020. \nOver the past five months\, a series of regional roundtables have taken place in collaboration with Regional Economic Commissions\, with support from UN entities working on extractives including the Climate Action Team\, UNDP\, DESA\, UNCTAD\, and UNEP. The substantive outcomes from these roundtables informed the first-ever policy brief by the UN Secretary-General on extractive industries. \nThe Global Roundtable on 25 Mary will assess the key recommendations outlined in this brief and identify concrete actions and recommendations that can be implemented at the global\, regional\, and national levels. The event will call for concrete solutions on six pressing issues : \n\nIntegrate a circular economy throughout the extractives sector\nSecure a just transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy\, including for coal-dependent economies\, and local communities affected by this change\, including women\, youth\, and indigenous groups\nAlign all forms of public and private finance in the extractives sector with the SDGs and Paris Agreement\, and build on pre-existing efforts to create a sustainable finance taxonomy for extractives\nEnd the local and global environmental damage caused by extractive industries\, including by bolstering transparency and traceability and cleaning global value chains\nEnsure that green technology and widely available data to monitor carbon emissions and air pollution are a global public good\nEnsure that extractive industries provide adequate levels of revenue that allow all countries to invest in their populations and in long-term sustainable development\n\nThe outcomes will also be carried over into future engagements\, including through a new Group of Friends on Extractive Industries\, and translated into action on the ground in a set of pilot countries to be identified which will be supported by the UN Regional Economic Commissions (RECs). \nParticipants \nLed by the United Nations Secretary-General\, the following stakeholders have been invited to participate in the roundtable: \n\nHeads of State and Government\, High-Level Representatives at Ministerial Level\nPartners from the private sector\, civil society and indigenous peoples\, academia\, and think tanks\nThe Executive Secretaries of all five UN Regional Economic Commissions and the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General on Financing the 2030 Agenda.\n\nThe event will be broadcast on UN WEB TV in English only at: http://webtv.un.org/ It can also be viewed via Facebook [@UNwebTV]; Twitter [@UNwebTV]; YouTube [@UNwebTV]

SUMMARY:EFG Webinar: EU Strategy to Secure Access to Mineral Raw Materials
DESCRIPTION:On 8 April 2021\, EFG is organising the webinar ‘EU Strategy to Secure Access to Mineral Raw Materials’.\n\n\nVitor Correia\, Past President of EFG and Secretary-General of the International Raw Materials Observatory will be the presenter of the webinar. \nThe EU recently launched the European Raw Material Alliance\, a partnership between industry players\, EU countries and regions\, trade unions\, civil society\, research and technology organisations\, investors and NGOs to ‘reduce Europe’s dependency on third countries\, diversifying supply from both primary and secondary sources and improving resource efficiency and circularity while promoting responsible sourcing worldwide’. \nThis signals an evident concern from policymakers on the European industry dependency on raw materials imports from third countries. \nThere are two good reasons for this concern: \n\nDelivering the European Green Deal would require vast quantities of mineral raw materials;\nResources nationalism is rising (even inside the EU)\, alongside the international rivalry to securing access to mineral raw materials.\n\nIn this context\, would the EU exercise of “soft power”\, applying the principles of cooperation\, inclusiveness\, transparency and respect of trade and competition rules\, be sufficient to meet the European demand for mineral raw materials? This will be the central question to be addressed in this talk. \nThe webinar is scheduled for 5 -6 PM CEST (Brussels time). \nPlease register for the free event here.

SUMMARY:Advances in critical mineral research: A forum in memory of Victor Labson
DESCRIPTION:New critical mineral deposits are required to secure the supply of natural resources that are used in today’s advanced technologies. The discovery and sustainable development of these new deposits represents a global challenge. Governments and international geological survey organizations are responding by improved multinational cooperation\, data sharing\, and through investments in geoscientific research. This Critical Minerals Forum brings together representatives from multiple geological surveys organizations to provide an update on the latest geoscience results and to discuss future critical mineral research. \nPresentations will focus on advanced mineral system models that are applicable to critical minerals and new methods for modelling mineral potential in buried\, remote\, and/or other challenging mineral exploration settings. Both of these research themes are included within the new Critical Mineral Mapping Initiative that is being conducted between the Geological Survey of Canada\, Geoscience Australia\, and the United States Geological Survey. Global efforts to expand this collaboration\, including the development of an online geochemical portal for critical mineral deposits\, will be discussed as part of this special session and is open to further contributions\, research\, and analysis. \nFormat \nThe Critical Minerals Forum will be hosted as a set of three regional sessions (Americas\, Europe and Africa\, and Asia and Oceania). SUMMARY:REIA 3rd LCA Workshop: Scaling Rare Earths for a Sustainable World
DESCRIPTION:Rare earths are critical metals\, which various green technologies heavily depend on. How to scale rare earth industry for our sustainable future? At present\, there is no single environmental footprint representing the rare earth sector. Thus\, when the industry and its consumers wish to market themselves as environmentally friendly\, they face a confusing range of choices and methods for environmental evaluation. We also need a framework to allow us to carry out LCAs with a consistent methodology and the project data should be integrated with downstream users and end-of-life it. REIA invites experts for their valuable experience and insights for sustainable policies and practices toward a green rare earth industry. Polestar will present the latest environmental footprint analysis comparing their electric and Volvo ICE models along with other speakers. Please join us for this online training workshop featuring leading researchers sharing their insights into these increasingly significant issues for modeling REEs in Life Cycle Assessment.
