SUMMARY:Geochemical Interpretation Tools for Exploration and Mining Geologists: From A-horizon to Z-score
DESCRIPTION:This is a course endorsed by EFG. \nThe online course comprises approx. 11 hours of concise video lecture materials\, which are subdivided into 12 study blocks. Each block requires to pass a short test\, either in quiz or essay format\, to successfully move on to the next block. A final exercise\, comprising 40 independent study hours will comprise a geochemical targeting desktop study utilising a large public domain dataset\, which allows you to put your newly acquired skills into practice and use GIS and ioGas software to generate regional exploration targets by employing a suite of univariate\, multivariate and lithogeochemical mapping techniques. The online course is supported by up to 4h of live online\, individual or group (based on demand) tutorial sessions with the course leader\, Benedikt Steiner. \nThis online version provides an alternative to the classroom-based course and facilitates independent study in your own time\, wherever you are based around the world. This format will be particularly useful to postgraduate students\, young industry professionals and mid-level career geologists who intend to improve their skills in geochemical exploration techniques\, but cannot attend classroom-based courses in person\, or prefer to study the learning materials over the course of several weeks. \nThis course aims to: Graduate/ Project/ Senior Geologists in mining and mineral exploration. DESCRIPTION:On 8 April 2021\, EFG is organising the webinar ‘EU Strategy to Secure Access to Mineral Raw Materials’.\n\n\nVitor Correia\, Past President of EFG and Secretary-General of the International Raw Materials Observatory will be the presenter of the webinar. \nThe EU recently launched the European Raw Material Alliance\, a partnership between industry players\, EU countries and regions\, trade unions\, civil society\, research and technology organisations\, investors and NGOs to ‘reduce Europe’s dependency on third countries\, diversifying supply from both primary and secondary sources and improving resource efficiency and circularity while promoting responsible sourcing worldwide’. \nThis signals an evident concern from policymakers on the European industry dependency on raw materials imports from third countries. \nThere are two good reasons for this concern: \n\nDelivering the European Green Deal would require vast quantities of mineral raw materials;\nResources nationalism is rising (even inside the EU)\, alongside the international rivalry to securing access to mineral raw materials.\n\nIn this context\, would the EU exercise of “soft power”\, applying the principles of cooperation\, inclusiveness\, transparency and respect of trade and competition rules\, be sufficient to meet the European demand for mineral raw materials? SUMMARY:Advances in critical mineral research: A forum in memory of Victor Labson
DESCRIPTION:New critical mineral deposits are required to secure the supply of natural resources that are used in today’s advanced technologies. The discovery and sustainable development of these new deposits represents a global chal­lenge. Governments and international geological survey organizations are responding by improved multinational cooperation\, data sharing\, and through investments in geoscientific research. This Critical Minerals Forum brings together representatives from multiple geological surveys organizations to provide an update on the latest geoscience results and to discuss future critical mineral research. \nPresentations will focus on advanced mineral system models that are appli­cable to critical minerals and new methods for modelling mineral potential in buried\, remote\, and/or other challenging mineral exploration settings. Both of these research themes are included within the new Critical Mineral Mapping Initiative that is being conducted between the Geological Survey of Canada\, Geoscience Australia\, and the United States Geological Survey. Global efforts to expand this collaboration\, including the development of an online geo­chemical portal for critical mineral deposits\, will be discussed as part of this special session and is open to further contributions\, research\, and analysis. \nFormat \nThe Critical Minerals Forum will be hosted as a set of three regional sessions (Americas\, Europe and Africa\, and Asia and Oceania). Each regional forum will feature lectures from science policy experts and geoscientists during a live plenary and moderated discussion session with attendees. DESCRIPTION:On 24 February 2021\, EFG is organising the webinar ‘Mineral resources of Sweden’. \n \nSweden is well known for its raw material resources and active mining industry. Swedish ore production represents a significant part of the EU mining sector and the associated Swedish industry cluster producing mining equipment lists several companies of worldwide reputation. Historically iron ore\, noble and base metals have been mined\, but the potential for other emerging critical raw materials such as REE is high. This webinar aims to present the mineral resources and mining industry of Sweden in a historical and geological context\, but also take a glance at future potential and discuss related problems and difficulties. \n Eurogeologist Magnus Johansson will be the presenter. Magnus is chair of the geoscientists branch of the Swedish Association of Professional Scientists and member of the EFG Panel of Experts on Minerals.
