SUMMARY:Global Rare Earths Summit 2022
DESCRIPTION: This leading virtual summit will provide a forum where senior policy members\, mining\, financial and supply chain executives can discuss how to manage the supply/demand squeeze for rare earths and meet the global need for a swift and responsible transition to green energy. \nRare earth elements have grown in popularity over the past 20 years due to the explosion in demand for technologies that require them. As energy transitions gather pace\, clean energy technologies\, which rare earth elements are essential for\, are becoming the fastest-growing segment of demand. Crucial to battery performance\, longevity\, energy density and magnetics\, these elements are essential for electric vehicles and wind turbines\, to name but a few. \nThe opportunities that rare earths present are immense\, especially with new frontiers being pushed in the mining and refining\, but the challenges posed by their use are vital to address and prepare for. Scarcity and geopolitical uncertainty make sourcing and utilising rare earth elements an ever-increasing challenge\, especially in the face of skyrocketing demand. The environmental and social impacts of mining are also under scrutiny from investors and other stakeholders\, especially as new mines open and existing mines push their production levels to their limits.

DESCRIPTION:The EESC has carried out extensive work in the past years on topics linked to mining and raw materials. With the publication in September 2020 of the Commission’s Action Plan on Critical Raw Materials\, and building on the past experience\, the EESC has been carrying out activity on this issue that included its opinion CCMI 177\, several follow up meetings (including cooperation in the framework of the European Parliament’s own initiative report on the subject)\, a webinar\, several press and public publications and the participation of the EESC in the European Raw Materials Alliance as observer. \nIn addition\, the issue of critical raw materials is topical and gaining momentum. The European Parliament has adopted its report on this topic on 23 November 2021. The Updated industrial strategy as well as the Commission’s 2021 Strategic Foresight Report both put a strong spotlight on the importance of critical raw materials to achieve strategic autonomy for EU industry and society. Also\, the European Raw Materials Alliance will be launching new clusters of activity in 2022. In short\, there is high need for the public discourse to continue and for civil society to continue its involvement on the subject. \nBuilding on previous activity\, this conference will specifically zoom in on two aspects: 1) Securing EU’s open strategic autonomy: the role of critical raw materials in EU industry’s green and digital transition calls for solutions to secure supply and ensure resilience 2) The importance of circularity and of creating a market for secondary raw materials in Europe to secure EU’s resilience.

SUMMARY:GeoERA Concluding Conference & 125th Anniversary of the Geological Survey of Belgium
DESCRIPTION:GSB 125th Anniversary \nThe Geological Survey of Belgium\, now part of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences\, was established in December of 1896. Throughout that long history it has persistently been building expertise\, preserving knowledge\, and above all serving society. This was the stable foundation for what has proven to be a highly dynamic mission. In the early days\, our geologists were exploring the country to fill the ever growing needs of the largest of the mainland economies. Today\, 125 years later\, society has come full circle. Challenged by the consequences of our industrial history\, our geologists are now working on sustainable solutions. A story of how needs change\, while geology remains key. \nTime to celebrate\, proudly look back\, and confidently glance forward. We welcome you on the 18th of January. \nGeoERA Concluding Conference \nOn Wednesday 19th January\, we will be marking the end of the GeoERA project.  The GeoERA ERA-Net on “Establishing the European Geological Surveys Research Area to deliver a Geological Service for Europe” was established in 2017\, bringing together 47 national and regional Geological Survey Organisations from 32 European countries to collaborate in a joint geoscientific research programme\, the first of its kind in Europe. For more information on GeoERA\, please visit the GeoERA website. \nWith the projects now publishing their final results\, a Concluding Conference will be held to showcase the achievements and discuss the impacts this degree of pan-European collaboration by national scientific institutes can have on political\, scientific and social levels\, and how geoscientific knowledge and data can contribute towards the goals of the European Green Deal. \nThis event will hear from EU and national representatives on the importance of geoscientific knowledge\, data and information to policy and decision-making processes. Given that geology has no borders\, we will also discuss the needs for and potential role of a future Geological Service for Europe with a panel of distinguished speakers. This will be followed by a Tour of the Museum of Natural Sciences with dedicated exhibitions that will showcase the achievements and products of all GeoERA Projects’ results. \nTo book your place on these events\, please fill in the form. \nDining with Dinosaurs \nIn honour of the 125th Anniversary of the Geological Survey of Belgium and to mark the occasion of GeoERA’s conclusion\, an evening dinner will be held within the Dinosaur Gallery of the Museum of Natural Sciences. The opportunity to attend this prestigious event is open to all interested parties and will provide the opportunity to network with high-level attendees in the impressive surroundings of the Museum (attendees to include EU policy-makers\, Directors of European Geological Surveys\, leading experts in Earth science topics and key stakeholders from industry\, academia and international institutions such as the UN).  The cost for attending the dinner will be €85\, please register your intention to attend.

SUMMARY:European Parliament Intergroup online event on “Greening raw materials policy”
DESCRIPTION:Sustainable and responsible use of natural resources is critical to maintain the European Union economically competitive and environmentally preserved. For this reason\, the management of primary and secondary raw materials has an important role to play in achieving resource efficiency and meeting the objectives set by the New Circular Economy Action Plan. Via its Report on the New Circular Economy Action Plan\, the European Parliament (EP) has underlined the need for an absolute decoupling of economic growth from resource use\, calling the European Commission to propose science-based binding EU mid-term and long-term targets for the reduction in the use of primary raw materials. On a similar note\, waste management needs to be better addressed\, for instance in terms of separate collection\, sorting and recycling facilities\, to increase the quantity and quality of recycled waste that can be injected back into the economy as secondary raw materials. Moreover\, the maintenance of coherence between EU’s internal and external policies is also essential to ensure that human rights and environmental protection standards of imported primary and secondary materials are equivalent to European’s ones. \nAs a result\, this online event organized by the EP Intergroup on “Climate Change\, Biodiversity and Sustainable Development” offers a room of discussion to key stakeholders involved in circularity and raw materials to further analyze the necessary steps to stimulate Europe’s transition towards a more circular raw materials economy.
