RawMatCop Alliance offers an advanced course with hands-on learning to demonstrate the ability of Copernicus to provide efficient solutions while complying with environmental regulations. Advanced approaches highlighting scalability\, accuracy assessment\, and time-series of imagery are offered in the course. \nThe 3 days in-person course is particularly beneficial for professionals with a preliminary background in the raw materials value chain and in Earth Observation. \nThe course has been developed by the RawMatCop Alliance partners\, with financial support from the EIT RawMaterials. \nRawMatCop Alliance aims to transform the advanced scientific knowledge integrated with the industrial expertise to support the whole mining life-cycle needs and requirements. DESCRIPTION:The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) is pleased to announce that the theme of Earth Science Week 2022 will be “Earth Science for a Sustainable World.” The event\, to be held October 9-15\, 2022\, will emphasize the essential role of Earth science in helping people make decisions that maintain and strengthen the planet’s ability to support thriving life. \nAll people share the same planet Earth. As individuals and societies engage with Earth’s systems\, their actions echo across time. Within people’s daily lives\, they are challenged to provide for human health\, safety\, and prosperity\, while preserving environmental sustainability. \n“Sustainability refers to practices that promote the capacity of the planet to support life throughout the biosphere\, which also involves interactions with the other Earth systems\,” AGI Executive Director Jonathan Arthur said on announcing the theme. “Earth science knowledge has a central role to play in addressing societal challenges\, including global sustainability.” \nThe Earth Science Week 2022 theme provides opportunities for everyone to enhance their understanding of geoscience — including the professions\, technologies\, and practices that contribute to the sustainability of the Earth\, society\, and all of life. SUMMARY:AIPG National Conference
DESCRIPTION:This year’s meeting theme is “Geology: The Cornerstone of our Future”. Geology plays a significant role in today’s society and will become ever more important in the years to come. Our reliance on basic resources and building materials such as sand and gravel for roads\, limestone for concrete\, iron for structural purposes\, and other base metals for electronics and other applications will not diminish; rather\, it will become a greater concern as existing deposits are depleted or rendered inaccessible. \nThe ever-increasing number of applications of rare earth elements has created a greater demand on extraction and several of these elements will be needed in ever greater quantities to assist in the transition to a reduced carbon emission future. Geologists will be needed to identify\, quantify\, and yes\, help with extraction of these mineral deposits. \nA reliable source of clean freshwater is a basic necessity for life\, and the onset of climate change is impacting these resources. Changing climate patterns mean that widespread areas may become stricken with drought. This will mean that significant depletion of groundwater aquifers and surface water reservoirs will occur in these areas as withdrawals exceed natural replenishment. This is already affecting agricultural practices and driving migration of human populations to areas where this precious resource may be found\, resulting in conflict and/or political unrest. In addition\, anthropogenic activities have contaminated some water resources and have made these resources locally unusable or require expensive treatment. \nThe national conference provides opportunities to present and learn from experts in various geology and geoscience fields\, with networking opportunities throughout the conference.

DESCRIPTION:GSB 125th Anniversary \nThe Geological Survey of Belgium\, now part of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences\, was established in December of 1896. We welcome you on the 18th of January. \nGeoERA Concluding Conference \nOn Wednesday 19th January\, we will be marking the end of the GeoERA project.  The GeoERA ERA-Net on “Establishing the European Geological Surveys Research Area to deliver a Geological Service for Europe” was established in 2017\, bringing together 47 national and regional Geological Survey Organisations from 32 European countries to collaborate in a joint geoscientific research programme\, the first of its kind in Europe. DESCRIPTION:Whether it concerns reliable energy supply\, access to raw materials for products we use in our day-to-day activities\, clean groundwater sustaining society and biodiversity but threatened by climate change or safety in urban areas\, many solutions lie dormant under the Earth’s surface or are directly connected to the subsurface. \nThe Geological Surveys of Europe are addressing society’s concerns by developing innovative solutions within the GeoERA research network in partnership with some other organisations. Through the umbrella organisation\, EuroGeoSurveys these solutions are part of the roadmap towards establishing a Geological Service for Europe. \nAfter all\, the subsurface is deeply integrated with our daily lives\, from energy production and storage\, to sustainable heating and cooling\, critical and sustainable raw materials\, construction materials and sustainable supply of water for society and nature. The underground provides a vital link to many essential new technologies and solutions that are challenging the geoscience and indeed all science communities to address the global climate goals and the targets of the European Green Deal. \nTogether with our key partners and stakeholders\, we want to investigate the role of subsurface information in the R&D value chain. What services are needed and how can we improve the embedding of our research results? \nWe will therefore conduct a webinar series\, scheduled to take place in the week of 9-13 November 2020. It will be spread over 5 sessions\, beginning with an overarching session on the grand challenges faced by society and how geoscience can play a key role in addressing them. DESCRIPTION:Water Pollution 2020 is the 15th International Conference in the series of Monitoring\, Modelling and Management of Water Pollution. The conference\, which has always been very successful\, provides a forum for discussion amongst scientists\, managers and academics from different areas of water contamination. The wealth of information exchanged in this international meeting continues to be of great benefit to all involved with water pollution problems. \nThe environmental problems caused by the increase of pollutant loads discharged into natural water bodies requires the formation of a framework for regulation and control. This framework needs to be based on scientific results that relate pollutant discharge with changes in water quality. The results of these studies allow the industry to apply more efficient methods of controlling and treating waste loads\, and water authorities to enforce appropriate regulations regarding this matter. \nEnvironmental problems are essentially interdisciplinary. Engineers and scientists working in this field must be familiar with a wide range of issues including the physical processes of mixing and dilution\, chemical and biological processes\, mathematical modelling\, data acquisition and measurement\, to name but a few. In view of the scarcity of available data\, it is important that experiences are shared on an international basis. DESCRIPTION:The 11th International Conference on Sustainable Development and Planning builds upon a series that started in 2003 in Skiathos\, Greece\, followed by other meetings in Bologna (2005)\, Algarve (2007)\, Cyprus (2009)\, New Forest – home of the Wessex Institute\, UK (2011); Kos\, Greece (2013)\, Istanbul (2015)\, Penang (2016)\, the University of the West of England in Bristol\, UK (2017) and Siena (2018). \nPlanners\, environmentalists\, architects\, engineers\, policy makers and economists have to work together to ensure that planning and development can meet our present needs without compromising the ability of future generations. \nProblems related to development and planning\, which affect rural and urban areas\, are present in all regions of the world. Accelerated urbanisation has resulted in the deterioration of the environment and loss of quality of life. Urban development can also aggravate problems faced by rural areas such as forests\, mountain regions and coastal areas\, amongst many others. Taking into consideration the interaction between different regions and developing new methodologies for monitoring\, planning and implementation of novel strategies can offer solutions mitigating environmental pollution and non-sustainable use of available resources. \nEnergy saving and eco-friendly building approaches have become an important part of modern development\, which places special emphasis on resource optimisation. Planning has a key role to play in ensuring that these solutions\, as well as new materials and processes\, are incorporated in the most efficient manner. \nSustainable Development and Planning 2020 will bring together academics\, policy makers\, practitioners and other stakeholders from across the globe to discuss the latest advances in the field. The conference will discuss new academic findings and their application in planning and development strategies\, assessment tools and decision making processes. \nAll published papers from previous meetings are permanently archived in the Wessex Institute eLibrary (www.witpress.com/elibrary) where they are freely available to the international community \nTopics\nThe following list covers some of the topics to be presented at the conference. DESCRIPTION:The Symposium will be organized by the Department of Environment\, Land and Infrastructure Engineering (DIATI) of Politecnico di Torino. The symposium leading theme is the enhancement of the environmental sustainability of anthropic activities concerning all the fields: water\, soil and atmosphere. \nThe Symposium program foresees the possibility of visits to treatment plants\, in addition to EC project meetings\, workshops on wastewater treatment modelling\, seminars.
