SUMMARY:GeoConnect³d – Framing groundwater management
DESCRIPTION:Groundwater is a crucial resource for humankind\, as well as for natural ecosystems. Therefore\, any subsurface use considers how it will affect shallow groundwater reserves. At least\, that is how it should be\, because these interactions are complex and uncertain. \nThis problem is approached by two GeoERA projects. VoGERA is a groundwater project that looks unidirectionally how groundwater is affected and aims at building generic schemes aided by results from case studies. GeoConnect³d is a cross-disciplinary project\, funded under the geo-energy theme\, focusing on providing the correct geological context to properly identify and evaluate pathways for interaction\, also between the deeper and shallower subsurface. \nAgenda \n\n\n\n09:30-09:45\n\n\nWelcome and instructions for interactive session\n\n\n09:45-10:00\n\n\nGroundwater at the receiving end: taking into account deep subsurface activities | Guest speaker: Koen Beerten (Belgian Nuclear Research Center)\n\n\n10:00-10:20\n\n\nThe deep and the drinkable: linking and understanding these subsurface worlds | GeoConnect³d speaker: Kris Piessens (Geological Survey of Belgium)\n\n\n10:20-10:55\n\n\nQ&A and interactive session focusing on receiving feedback from guest speaker and audience about the GeoConnect³d method\n\n\n10:55-11:00\n\n\nRecap of lessons and expectations towards GeoConnect³d\n\n\n\n  \nPlease register here for this free event.

SUMMARY:Environmental Impact 2020: 5th International Conference on Environmental and Economic Impact on Sustainable Development
DESCRIPTION:The 5th International Conference on Environmental and Economic Impact on Sustainable Development follows the success of four previous meetings held in the New Forest\, UK\, (home of the Wessex Institute of Technology) in 2012; Ancona\, Italy in 2014; Valencia\, Spain in 2016; and Naples\, Italy in 2018. \nThe meeting will provide an international forum to discuss the most serious problems affecting sustainable development. The Conference will consider the impact of economic constraints on the environment\, taking into account the social aspects as well as the over-use of natural resources. Uncontrolled development can also result in damage to the environment in terms of the release of toxic substances and hazardous waste. \nThe meeting will examine issues related to whether some forms of development are compatible with environmental protection\, particularly in cases of possible serious contamination and toxicity. \nThe conference will address problems of great importance discussing more constructive and progressive approaches to ensure sustainability. A major motivation for the meeting is to learn from past failure\, to avoid repeating similar mistakes\, while attempting to prevent emerging threats to environmental and ecological systems. \nFundamental to these concepts is the analysis of the inherent risk and the development of appropriate strategies. \nAll published papers from previous meetings are permanently archived in the Wessex Institute eLibrary (www.witpress.com/elibrary) where they are freely available to the international community \nTopics\nThe following list covers some of the topics to be presented at Environmental Impact 2020. Papers on other topics related to the objectives of the conference are also welcome. \n\nEnvironmental policies and planning\nEnvironmental assessments\nHuman factors\nSustainable cities\nEconomic issues\nNatural resources management\nEnergy and the environment\nFood production systems and policies\nEcosystems preservation\nSoil pollution\nRemediation strategies\nDecommission planning\nHazardous plants\nBrownfields rehabilitation\nAir and water pollution\nHealth effects\nPublic communication and involvement\nLegislation and regulations\nSustainable development goals\nLife cycle assessments\nIrrigation\nFood recovery\nStakeholders involvement\nInstitutional issues\nEnvironmental management systems\nConsumption vs sustainability\nSocial-ecological issues\nSustainability appraisals\nEnvironmental strategies and tactics\nFood waste reduction and impact on the environment\nAdaptation to environmental damage\nCoastal zones impacts\nSocial participation of environmental licensing\nNonlinear regression analysis\nUN Sustainable Development Goals\nCase studies

SUMMARY:Workshop: ‘Uncertainty Quantification and Visualization in Geological modelling’
DESCRIPTION:As a kick-off of the coming EAGE Annual Meeting in Amsterdam (8-11 June 2020)\, we draw to your attention a workshop on ‘Uncertainty Quantification and Visualization in Geological modelling’ organised by the Dutch European Geologists Denise Maljers\, Johan ten Veen\, Jan Stafleu and Freek Busschers (TNO – Geological Survey of the Netherlands).  \nThis full-day workshop will cover all aspects of uncertainty related to geological models. Topics include model accuracy\, model precision and the visualization and communication of these uncertainties for geological models ranging from detailed reservoir models to regional scale multi-purpose models. \nThe workshop is aimed at geoscientists and policymakers that deal with uncertainties\, by bridging gaps between producing uncertainty information and understanding and using it. \nThe uncertainty in these models has different sources\, ranging from uncertainties related to wells\, i.e. metadata and interpretation\, seismics\, i.e. 2D or 3D\, vintage\, velocity model\, fault model\, property modelling\, etc. But also even less quantifiable sources as geological knowledge used in the modelling process. Furthermore\, what would be the best way to communicate these uncertainties\, using statistical measures\, diagrams\, cross-sections? \nIn this workshop we start with a morning session for non-specialists by giving mini-lectures on accuracy\, precision and visualization\, given by Florian Wellmann and by Bjorn Zehner. For the afternoon session we invite all interested in the topic to submit an abstract for an oral presentation to present case-studies showcasing the important role of the quantification of uncertainties or the visualization of uncertainties. \nAbstract submission deadline: February 15th 2020
