SUMMARY:Salt Diapirism and Sediment Interactions in Portugal Lusitanian & Algarve Basins
DESCRIPTION:This course is endorsed by EFG. \nThis 5 day field trip focuses on the main aspects of salt tectonics\, particularly on diapirs and their interplay with sedimentary processes. Participants will observe structural and sedimentary features that are usually not detectable on seismic data. \nThe onshore Algarve and Lusitanian basins located on the Atlantic West Iberian Margin present world-class exposures that are ideal to visualize common aspects and problems that professionals deal with during exploration\, appraisal\, and development phases of hydrocarbon accumulations and for underground energy storage (natural gas\, hydrogen\, compressed air\, battery systems\, etc…)\, CCUS\, geothermal energy and toxic /nuclear waste storage.\nThe geological structures in the two basins improve our understanding of the origin and complexity of evaporitic sequences and related halokinetic processes\, limitations with imaging and interpreting internal and external structure of salt diapirs. Participants will observe the implications of salt tectonics for reservoir properties and trapping mechanisms on upturned salt diapir flanks\, thermal gradient variation and intra-salt heterogeneity. \nThis field trip is based on research undertaken by the instructors over the past 8 years in two Portuguese basins. Participants will understand salt tectonics concepts while observing world-class field examples\, which include: \n\n\nAn unique chance to see outcrops with an oil field trapped against a salt diapir; \n\n\nVisit a salt mine inside a squeezed diapir beneath the centre of Loulé City in Algarve; \n\n\nExplore the deepest evaporite quarry in Portugal\, which was originally a mine; \n\n\nMultiple exceptional outcrops of salt-related structures in Central and southern Portugal. \n\n\n  \nFurther information and registration:: https://www.geologica.xyz/salt-tig-geo-logica-field-trip-i2 \nCourse characteristics: \nPhysical requirements: Easy. Participants will be required to walk a maximum of 2 km at some localities over easy relatively flat terrain. Not recommended for claustrophobic individuals (visit to mine).\nDuration: 5 days\nType: Fieldwork and evening talks\nArea: Central Algarve and Central Costal Portugal\nTarget audience: Salt Specialists\, Structural Geologists\, Petroleum Geologists\, Geophysicists\, Mining Geologists and Engineers.\nPre-requisites: Structural geology and salt tectonic principles\nWhat’s included: Transportation\, meals\, accommodation in 4 star (3 nights) and 5 Star  (1 night) hotels\, digital and paper field guide\, personal insurance\, PPE bag (hard hat\, reflective vest\, emergency blanket\, waterproof whistle) and walking poles (at request).\nNumber of participants: Minimum of 15 and maximum 20 persons + 3 guides / instructors. \nCourse Cost: 3000 € (excl. tax).\nSpecial discount rates available for EFG – European Federation of Geologists (20%) or APG – Associação Portuguesa de Geólogos members (10%). Early bird discount available (10%) for the first 5 participants until the end of May 2023. \n

SUMMARY:SEG-AGU Advances in Distributed Sensing for Geophysics Virtual Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Geophysical data acquisition is currently undergoing a quiet revolution driven by new advances in distributed sensing approaches based on fiber optics\, inexpensive nodal systems\, and ubiquitous sensors embedded in the Internet of Things. The commonality between these approaches is the capacity to economically conduct ultra-high-density measurements at scales above 1000 sensing locations\, providing an unaliased view of seismic wavefields as well as other measurands including strain and temperature. Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing (DxS) and Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) in particular are moving from specialized tools for vertical seismic profiling to broadly utilized approaches deployed in boreholes\, on the surface\, and now on the seafloor with application domains in seismology\, hydrogeology\, and oceanography\, as well as applied geophysics. With this rapid growth in measurement density have come new challenges in data management and analysis requiring focused development of approaches for identifying patterns and extracting information from these massive datasets\, potentially exploiting machine learning methodologies. \nThis workshop seeks to bring together researchers from industry\, academia\, and the public sector involved in exploiting these recent sensing advances with the broader geoscience community to explore both the underlying technologies as well as new domains for distributed sensor deployment. The format of the workshop is intended to foster lively discussion and interaction\, and includes an evening poster session to facilitate longer debates.

SUMMARY:Workshop: ‘Uncertainty Quantification and Visualization in Geological modelling’
DESCRIPTION:As a kick-off of the coming EAGE Annual Meeting in Amsterdam (8-11 June 2020)\, we draw to your attention a workshop on ‘Uncertainty Quantification and Visualization in Geological modelling’ organised by the Dutch European Geologists Denise Maljers\, Johan ten Veen\, Jan Stafleu and Freek Busschers (TNO – Geological Survey of the Netherlands).  \nThis full-day workshop will cover all aspects of uncertainty related to geological models. Topics include model accuracy\, model precision and the visualization and communication of these uncertainties for geological models ranging from detailed reservoir models to regional scale multi-purpose models. \nThe workshop is aimed at geoscientists and policymakers that deal with uncertainties\, by bridging gaps between producing uncertainty information and understanding and using it. \nThe uncertainty in these models has different sources\, ranging from uncertainties related to wells\, i.e. metadata and interpretation\, seismics\, i.e. 2D or 3D\, vintage\, velocity model\, fault model\, property modelling\, etc. But also even less quantifiable sources as geological knowledge used in the modelling process. Furthermore\, what would be the best way to communicate these uncertainties\, using statistical measures\, diagrams\, cross-sections? \nIn this workshop we start with a morning session for non-specialists by giving mini-lectures on accuracy\, precision and visualization\, given by Florian Wellmann and by Bjorn Zehner. For the afternoon session we invite all interested in the topic to submit an abstract for an oral presentation to present case-studies showcasing the important role of the quantification of uncertainties or the visualization of uncertainties. \nAbstract submission deadline: February 15th 2020

SUMMARY:Geophysical methods and the detection of environmental contamination
DESCRIPTION:This is  a course endorsed by EFG. \nOutline of content \nThe production of waste is a problem that has always accompanied the human being. In the last few decades\, this problem has become increasingly larger and more difficult to control. For this reason\, ways of minimizing this waste have been created over the past few years. At the same time\, the techniques used have evolved so that the storage of different types of waste is less harmful to the environment. However\, many wastes have been stored improperly for many years. Therefore\, to identify places contaminated by these residues. there are more innovative ways to detect them without having to use invasive methods. This course will focus on geophysical methods and their application on assessing environmental contamination\, giving relevance to mapping on large scale\, and its benefits in terms of cost reduction in comparison to other current methods (water and soil sampling\, for example). \nThis online course will focus on the great potential of these techniques and at the same time provide trainees with knowledge that will allow them to put these techniques into practice\, thus contributing to a global advance in the area of environmental remediation. \nLink to the course \nObjectives \n–          To promote knowledge of techniques that allow the detection of contamination in environmentally degraded places\, caused by the deficient storage of urban solid waste deposits \n–          To encourage the use of this indirect approach to all types of places that require environmental remediation; \n–          To develop skills that will allow all trainees to implement the concepts and knowledge obtained in their current or future workplaces\, increasing their performance in all their activities; \n–          To contribute to a greater motivation of all stakeholders in the area of geosciences\, showing that there is still much to be done and that the role of each one in the future is relevant and really very important in environmental issues. \nCost \nRegular fee: 180 € \nAPG members and EurGeol fee: 135 € \nInscription form here
