SUMMARY:Geothermal Energy- from Potential to Implementation
DESCRIPTION:Geothermal Energy- from Potential to Implementation \nRenewables are seen as the future source of energy to meet the world’s growing demand\, with geothermal resources offering a constant and independent supply. \n\nThere is a growing need for interdisciplinary competence to untap the vast geothermal potential worldwide\, with a high level of skills’ transferability across geo-resource sectors\, including oil and gas. \n\n\nThis three day course is presented through a mixture of lectures\, tutorials and discussion of case studies. Active participation from the delegates is strongly encouraged during the whole course in order to consolidate learning. SUMMARY:Geochemical Interpretation Tools for Exploration and Mining Geologists: Examples from SE Ireland\, Finland and sub-Saharan Africa
DESCRIPTION:Multi-element trace geochemical surveys are a standard tool in detailed and regional geochemical exploration. Whilst in the past univariate anomaly detection along with a thorough analysis of ore element assemblages were considered routine interpretation workflows\, affordable trace element geochemistry now provides the necessary tools to interpret bedrock geology\, mineralisation systems and further applications in mining and mineral processing. \nMost governmental geological surveys make regional geochemical datasets available which are of invaluable use to exploration geologists. The Tellus SE Ireland dataset will be investigated during this workshop and implications for regional prospectivity discussed. \nParticipants will be required to bring a laptop and ioGAS software which can be downloaded as a demo version from http://reflexnow.com/iogas. \nThe workshop aims to introduce the following themes: \n1. SUMMARY:Volcanoes' Night
DESCRIPTION:This is a course endorsed by EFG \nLast Friday of every September (in connection with the European Researchers’ Night event series) European Researchers’ Nights (ERNs) are a pan-European series of events funded by the European Commission\, organised on the last Friday of every September since 2005. ERNs mobilise scientific\, academic and research organisations with the aim of giving the public the opportunity to meet researchers in an informal setting. The overall objective of ERNs is to achieve better awareness among the general public concerning the importance of science in everyday life and to combat stereotypes about researchers. The longer-term strategic objective of ERNs is to encourage young people to embark on a scientific career. \nVolcanoes’ Night I-II-III was an ERN project series funded by the EC FP7 and H2020 programmes between 2012-2015 (EC contract No. 316558\, 610050\, 633310\, www.nochedevolcanes.es). The objective of the project was to use volcanoes as a background against which the role of geoscientists could be explained to the public. The scope of Volcanoes’ Night was exclusively dedicated to geoscience\, and in this respect it stands out among all other ERN projects\, which are always more general in scope. \nEC funding for Volcanoes’ Night ended on 1 December 2015. The project has now entered an official 5-year exploitation phase\, during which our aim is to widely disseminate the achievements of this project. Accordingly\, we are aiming to continue Volcanoes’ Night ourselves and encourage other institutions to organise such an event themselves with the aim of educating the public about the work of geoscientists. \nThe “training course” is thus in fact a single-night Event\, during which a range of awareness raising actions takes place. There is a several-month long awareness raising period that precedes the organisation of the event. Past activities and programmes are described here: http://en.nochedevolcanes.es/nights/ \nAmongst the numerous activities previously offered to the attendees: hands-on experiments\, shows\, science cafés\, movie theatre\, live connections with scientists from all over the world\, kids’ programme\, poster session\, contest rewarding ceremonies\, live music\, European Corner and similar actions\, addressing the public at large with a strong focus on kids and young people. During the course of the activities the participating scientists are not only expected to talk about their field of research\, but also share their experiences on how students can approach science and research institutions\, providing a perfect scenario to attract young people to science careers. The main objectives of Volcanoes’ Night consist of enhancing public recognition of geoscientists and their work\, of their impact on citizens’ daily lives and well-being\, as well as of showcasing the researchers as ordinary people whose work is fascinating and fun\, in such a way to stimulate young people’s interest for geoscience and geoscientific careers. In this context\, the approach relies on the fascination and respect that volcanoes have always exerted over the public. Beyond the objectives referred to above\, the Volcanoes’ Night also aims at bridging the gap between science and the general public of different ages\, so as well intends to provide first-hand information about geoscientific topics to improve the understanding of Earth and geological processes/applications. \nThe course is free of charge for the participants.

SUMMARY:Workshop: From Exploration to Feasibility – Best Practice Methods in Sampling\, Quality Control and Evaluation
DESCRIPTION:This is a course endorsed by EFG \nThe reporting of mineral resources and other geo-technical results is considered essential to enable the funding and sustainable development of mining operations worldwide. This 1-day workshop introduces the participant to all key aspects of mineral resource reporting in the exploration and mining industry. Participants will learn about the mining life cycle and the steps involved to delineate a mineral deposit. The principles and limitations of surface and drillhole sampling will be discussed and a focus put on evaluating the overall technical work conducted on a mineral deposit throughout the mining cycle using the PERC reporting code. Another aim of this interactive workshop will be to facilitate a knowledge and experience exchange between the presenter and the audience\, and to encourage a discussion of EU legislation and mineral policy requirements. Therefore\, the course content is supported by practical examples from major mining regions and mineral deposit styles where the PERC reporting code has been successfully/ unsuccessfully applied. \nThe workshop will introduce the following themes:\n1. Introduction to the Mining Cycle and Raw Materials Value Chain\n2. Reporting of Mineral Resources and Exploration results: fundamentals and\nrequirements\, the role of the PERC resource reporting code\n3. Surface sampling: principles and methodology\, role and importance of orientation\nsurveys\n4. Drilling and drillhole sampling: principles and methodology\, importance of\nsampling strategies in different exploration and mining scenarios\n5. Analytical geochemistry and sample assays: overview & best choice of\nmethodology\n6. QAQC: principles and evaluation of sampling and analytical quality using QC plots\nand charts. Examples will be presented for QAQC in different stages of the mining\ncycle.\n7. Review of the workshop and outlook \nThe Workshop is provided by BDG Germany and the course leader is EurGeol Benedict Steiner. The price is 208 Euro for BDG-members and members of other national associations of the EFG (incl. titleholders) Non members pay 258 Euros. The course is aiming at professional geologists working in the field of exploration geology and geology of raw materials.
