SUMMARY:From Space to field: Application of recent technologies to field structural geological mapping
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nThis course is endorsed by EFG. \nThis 3 day course introduces the potential of using virtually free publicly available remote sensing data and related tools / softwares /apps to assist structural geological interpretation and mapping\, as an integrated method to be used both in the office and field. During the first two days\, main data types and techniques used in remote sensed structural interpretation will be presented\, for both compressional and extensional geological settings.\nTheoretical concepts will be illustrated by presenting real examples. Practical hands-on interpretation exercises will be followed to consolidate aspects learned. The methodology for creating geological maps and converting these into formats that can be used in tablets and smartphones will be demonstrated. On the third day\, participants will test the field usage of t maps created and converted during the course. This will allow ground check/confirmation of previously interpreted data and for collection of new field info. The instructor has two decades of experience in the application of these methodologies\, having already presented and taught this topic on several occasions. SUMMARY:EPWS ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2022 - Gender\, intersectionality and inclusion in the EU research context
DESCRIPTION:The up-to-date vision of science requires to approaching and developing science with a vision capable to comprise sex and gender as a research dimension\, as well as to consider how gender interweaves with other systems of power linked to social categories\, such as ethnicity\, social class\, disability\, sexual orientation\, age\, etc.\, producing vulnerabilities and obstacles. Intersectionality\, accordingly\, is one of “the must” in the present scientific landscape. \nThe 2022 annual conference is dedicated to the concept of intersectionality\, by focusing and discussing the following questions: How do\nwe as scientists –and in particular as women scientists– intend to interpret intersectionality\, a vision that requires to respect and promote the differences and peculiarities characterizing human beings and social dimensions? How do we manage the multiple dimensions involved in basic research and technological innovation? What kind of support would we want from EU research and gender equality policies? Which policies and measures would we like to encourage the EU to continue or to initiate in this respect? \nIn this conference\, EPWS wishes to give voice to its associations\, which are invited to present and discuss their visions\, experiences\, and challenges about intersectionality. A section of the conference will regard -as representative- the case of women migrants/refugees involved in science; needs and ongoing initiatives will be analyzed\, also through the narratives of women scientists of various disciplines and national backgrounds directly involved in the matter.

SUMMARY:Mary Anning and other inspiring female geoscientists
DESCRIPTION:Some pioneer women paved the way in geology. However\, they faced challenges for their voices to be heard and for their remarkable work to be recognised at their time. \nWe are inviting the authors of two fascinating books that pay tribute to these pioneer geologists: GEAS – Women Who Study the Earth and The Fossil Woman. A Life of Mary Anning. ENGIE coordinator Eva Hartai will be the host of the session. \nGEAS is an illustrated booklet featuring 12 pioneer women geoscientists. The publication is a travel through time giving voice to women geologists of different times\, historical contexts and nationalities. They all have something in common: they made an indelible mark on the strata of our knowledge. Spanish geologists Rosa María Mateos and Ana Ruíz Constan are the authors of this book and these 12 women were really an inspiration to them. The artist Nívola Uyá is the author of the beautiful illustrations of GEAS. \nThe remarkable palaeontologist Mary Anning is one of the women showcased in the book and she leads us to Tom Sharpe‘s biography The Fossil Woman. A Life of Mary Anning. Mary Anning was born in Lyme Regis in England in 1799 and was taught to look for fossils by her father who sold them to tourists. After he died\, the family continued to sell fossils and discovered what were thought to be fossil crocodiles. By 1820\, Mary was running the business and her discovery of a new fossil reptile\, Plesiosaurus\, in 1823 made her famous. Mary’s fossils and her expertise attracted scientists from across Britain\, Europe and even from North America to Lyme Regis to buy specimens from her for their collections and museums. She was more than just a collector and seller of fossils; she observed where and how they occurred and experimented with living animals to help her identify her finds. She was a professional palaeontologist. However\, at that time women were not admitted to most scientific societies\, so despite her fame and expertise\, and the respect in which she was held by her scientist friends\, Mary was unable to take part in the meetings where her discoveries were discussed. SUMMARY:International Geodiversity Day
DESCRIPTION:Geodiversity is the natural portion of the planet that is not alive both at the surface and in the interior. It includes the Earth’s minerals\, rocks\, fossils\, soils\, sediments\, landforms and topography\, as well as hydrological features such as rivers and lakes and the processes that make and modify these features. It is the source of the materials that build towns and cities and serves as the support system for all agricultural systems by providing soil and water. Geodiversity provides resources for energy generation\, including the materials used to manufacture wind turbines and solar panels. Through its diverse landscapes\, colours and forms\, geodiversity inspires artists and fascinates tourists. \nDespite this\, most people are unaware of the extent to which we depend on geodiversity. It is\, therefore\, crucial to promote a better understanding of the Earth’s dynamic processes to ensure that citizens make informed policy choices for a more sustainable society\, an essential element in the implementation of the United Nations’ 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. \nIn that sense\, International Geodiversity Day will offer an opportunity to showcase how an education in geological sciences can provide humanity with sustainable solutions to pressing challenges such as responsible resource extraction\, disaster risk reduction\, mitigation of climate change and biodiversity loss. It will also raise awareness of the critical linkages between geodiversity and all life forms. \nInternational days are annual observances instigated by the United Nations to generate awareness and action on issues of concern\, or to celebrate human achievement. \nUNESCO and IUGS sponsor the UNESCO International Geoscience and Geoparks Programme (IGGP)\, which will be responsible for administering International Diversity Day. \nAs the only United Nations body with a mandate to support research and capacity-building in geology and geophysics\, UNESCO will use International Geodiversity Day to promote the goals of The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development\, as well as the creation of new UNESCO Global Geoparks in Africa\, the Arab region and Latin America\, in particular.

Throughout that long history it has persistently been building expertise\, preserving knowledge\, and above all serving society. This was the stable foundation for what has proven to be a highly dynamic mission. In the early days\, our geologists were exploring the country to fill the ever growing needs of the largest of the mainland economies. Today\, 125 years later\, society has come full circle. Challenged by the consequences of our industrial history\, our geologists are now working on sustainable solutions. A story of how needs change\, while geology remains key. \nTime to celebrate\, proudly look back\, and confidently glance forward. We welcome you on the 18th of January. \nGeoERA Concluding Conference \nOn Wednesday 19th January\, we will be marking the end of the GeoERA project.  The GeoERA ERA-Net on “Establishing the European Geological Surveys Research Area to deliver a Geological Service for Europe” was established in 2017\, bringing together 47 national and regional Geological Survey Organisations from 32 European countries to collaborate in a joint geoscientific research programme\, the first of its kind in Europe. SUMMARY:Geochemical Interpretation Tools for Exploration and Mining Geologists: From A-horizon to Z-score
DESCRIPTION:This is a course endorsed by EFG. \nThe online course comprises approx. 11 hours of concise video lecture materials\, which are subdivided into 12 study blocks. Each block requires to pass a short test\, either in quiz or essay format\, to successfully move on to the next block. A final exercise\, comprising 40 independent study hours will comprise a geochemical targeting desktop study utilising a large public domain dataset\, which allows you to put your newly acquired skills into practice and use GIS and ioGas software to generate regional exploration targets by employing a suite of univariate\, multivariate and lithogeochemical mapping techniques. The online course is supported by up to 4h of live online\, individual or group (based on demand) tutorial sessions with the course leader\, Benedikt Steiner. \nThis online version provides an alternative to the classroom-based course and facilitates independent study in your own time\, wherever you are based around the world.
