Gain tools to identify system tracts\, sequence boundaries\, and interpret depositional sequences with predictive value for exploration and development. Includes practical exercises and case studies. \nABOUT THE COURSE:\nSequence Stratigraphy is a branch of Geology that combines multiple disciplines\, notably Sedimentology\, biostratigraphy\, trace fossil analysis\, and seismic stratigraphy in addition to classical lithostratigraphy. \nSince its inception in the 1970s\, it has been widely used in both academic and industrial domains. One of its main advantages is the integrated nature of the approach to sedimentary systems\, using multiple disciplines. The application at different scales – from kilometric to metric allows the usage of different sets of data: seismic\, petrophysical\, biostratigraphical and outcrop. \nFrom the perspective of geological resource exploration\, the predictive power of Sequence Stratigraphy is immensely important as it allows to reduce risks and estimate resource quantities. \nABOUT THE PRESENTER:\nDr. Gil Machado\, member of the Portuguese Association of Geologists\, holds a degree in Geology and a European Doctorate (PhD) in Stratigraphy and Petroleum Geology and has ca. 12 years of experience in the Energy industry\, in exploration projects of Oman\, Mozambique\, Brazil\, Angola\, Guinea-Bissau\, Senegal\, Gabon\, Morocco\, and other Atlantic basins. He is an advanced seismic interpreter\, including sediment fairways identification\, deep water sedimentation characterization\, sequence stratigraphy and prospect generation and risking. He has worked extensively with well correlation\, biostratigraphy\, regional prospectivity studies and has managed teams and projects in multiple cultural environments. \nHe has mentored and supervised Bsc and Msc students\, and young professionals and taught several short courses and lectures on these subjects. \nAs part of his career he worked at Petroleum Development Oman as a Stratigrapher where he was responsible for the Precambrian and Lower Paleozoic stratigraphy studies and for the scientific management of the palynology laboratory of the company. He followed multiple wells as an operational stratigrapher providing real-time advice to the well geologists for casing points\, TD calls\, etc. He also contributed to the biostratigraphic zonation review of the subsurface of Oman. \nHe is affiliated with the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE)\, the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) and a corresponding member of the Devonian subcommission of the International Commission on Stratigraphy. \nGil Machado is currently heading a geological consulting company – Chronosurveys – providing services and training in Stratigraphy\, source rock evaluation\, and Petroleum Geology. \nCOURSE OBJECTIVES:\nThe objective of this training course is to get more out of seismic and well data through the use of sequence and seismic stratigraphy and integrated stratigraphic analysis to further constrain geological models. SUMMARY:From Space to field: Application of recent technologies to field structural geological mapping
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nThis course is endorsed by EFG. \nThis 3 day course introduces the potential of using virtually free publicly available remote sensing data and related tools / softwares /apps to assist structural geological interpretation and mapping\, as an integrated method to be used both in the office and field. During the first two days\, main data types and techniques used in remote sensed structural interpretation will be presented\, for both compressional and extensional geological settings.\nTheoretical concepts will be illustrated by presenting real examples. Practical hands-on interpretation exercises will be followed to consolidate aspects learned. The methodology for creating geological maps and converting these into formats that can be used in tablets and smartphones will be demonstrated. On the third day\, participants will test the field usage of t maps created and converted during the course. This will allow ground check/confirmation of previously interpreted data and for collection of new field info. The instructor has two decades of experience in the application of these methodologies\, having already presented and taught this topic on several occasions. SUMMARY:Salt Diapirism and Sediment Interactions in Portugal Lusitanian & Algarve Basins
DESCRIPTION:This is a course endorsed by EFG \nContent of the course: \nThis 5-day field trip focuses on the main aspects of salt tectonics\, particularly on diapirs and their interplay with sedimentary processes. Participants will observe structural and sedimentary features that are usually not detectable on seismic data. \nThe onshore Algarve and Lusitanian basins located on the Atlantic West Iberian Margin present world-class exposures that are ideal to visualize common aspects and problems that professionals deal with during exploration\, appraisal\, and development phases of hydrocarbon accumulations and for underground energy storage (natural gas\, hydrogen\, compressed air\, battery systems\, etc…)\, CCUS\, geothermal energy and toxic /nuclear waste storage. \nThe geological structures in the two basins improve our understanding of the origin and complexity of evaporitic sequences and related halokinetic processes\, limitations with imaging and interpreting internal and external structure of salt diapirs.
